六、阅读理解 (共3题,共 15分)
  • 21、What is time? What is beauty? What is a good life? Have you thought about such big questions? In fact, these are things that philosophy(哲学)cares about.

World Philosophy Day is every year on the third Thursday of November. It celebrates the importance and role of philosophy in our lives. This year, it falls on November 18th.

The word “philosophy” comes from Greek, meaning “love of wisdom (智慧) ”. It is the study of the nature and meaning of human life. It tries to find answers to basic questions about the world and ourselves. What makes a philosophical question is not what it is about, but at what level it is asked. They might sound simple, but they can be quite difficult to answer. For example, someone might ask whether a social rule is fair. A philosopher will ask, “What is fairness?” Thinking about such questions makes us think deeply. “We need philosophy because it’s a human thing to do,” said Emma Worley of the UK’s Philosophy Foundation, “to think and to reason.”

The birth of philosophy has helped social development. As the saying goes, “Every empire started from a thought.” For thousands of years, people were doing what they were told to. No one questioned if it was right or wrong. Widows (寡妇) were burning themselves along with the dead bodies of their husbands. Girls were seen as a burden (负担) for centuries. But 2,500 years ago, Greek philosopher Socrates started to question some thoughts, asking “Why?” and “Is this the best way?”

Philosophy makes sense to us in daily life as well. Epictetus, an ancient Roman philosopher of Stoicism, said what makes men have trouble is not events, but their opinion about events. Stoicism also notes that you can’t control what happens to you, you can only control how you deal with it. These ideas help us control our feelings and live better.

“There’s a medical art for the mind, and its name is philosophy,” said ancient Roman philosopher Cicero.

It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the bench in Washington, D.C.’s Union Station, waiting for the train. Inside the waiting hall were many people.

A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale face, dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless.” He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him,” I said to myself. Just at that moment, a well-dressed young couple walked towards him.” Excuse me,” the man bent down. “My wife and I bought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” he handed the boy a meal box. The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly he stopped.

In the direction to which he looked, I saw an old man in rags-in a worn sweater, worn trousers and open shoes, coming into the hall. Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood and helped the old to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered it on the old man’s shoulders,

saying, “A gentleman brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?” He placed the still-warm meal box in the old man’s hands without waiting for an answer.” Sure, son, but if only you share that sandwich with me. It’s too much for a man at my age. ”

We were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and dad went up to those rags, “Excuse me…”

I rushed into a KFC and took out my pocket money. It was so cold that afternoon but I felt much warmer than I had ever thought possible.

  • 23、Class was almost over. Tom asked our math teacher, Mr Green, about the answer to a math problem. He thought it was 512. But Mr Green said it was 64.

Later that day, Tom asked friends, classmates, and other math teachers. Was it 64 or 512? One of the math teachers they asked was Mr Smith, our math teacher last year. He said it was 512. Then the fun began.

The next day, in Mr Green’s class, Tom told him Mr Smith’s answer. Mr Green didn’t change his mind. As soon as the class was over, Tom went to Mr Smith’s office.

A few minutes later, Tom returned with Mr Smith and four students from another class. And the classroom became an interesting place. Everyone was excited, waiting for a long, heated discussion between the two teachers.

We weren’t disappointed. Right then and there, Mr Smith and Mr Green began their argument (争论). They tried to show their answers on the blackboard. They used some math words and expressions I had never heard of, but at one point, the vocabulary turned simple.

“No, ...” Mr Smith said. “Yes, ...” Mr Green answered.

“No, ...” Mr Smith said again. “Yes, ...” Mr Green repeated.

At first, we were on our seats listening carefully, trying to follow their ideas. Later, Tom and some other students began to stand together around them. As time passed by, students showed their support for different teachers and became two teams. Everyone worked so hard, just for the answer to a single math problem. That’s the power of maths!

When the school bell rang, the problem was still not solved. “Why not ask all the math teachers at school to join us and have a meeting for it?” Mr. Smith said.

“How about lunch time? ...” Mr. Green replied.

“Great! …” All the students shouted …
