21、It was Christmas Eve. When everyone went to bed, Bunny couldn’t fall asleep. He still couldn’t think of what he wanted as a special Christmas present. He wondered how Santa — Father Christmas would know what to bring him if he didn’t know himself.
As he was sitting up in bed, Bunny heard a big noise on the roof and a sound downstairs. It was Santa Claus, he realized. Bunny jumped out of bed and ran down the hall to the stairs. He hoped to take a look at the old man before Santa left for his next stop.
By the time Bunny was at the bottom of the stairs, everything was silent again. Lots of presents were put under the Christmas tree, but Santa was gone. A little disappointed(失望的), Bunny turned to climb back upstairs when he heard a cry.
“Hello,” said Bunny. “Is somebody there?”
He was answered by another cry. Bunny looked around the big pile of presents to see what was making the noise. Right under the tree was a funny looking brown animal with big feet and sad eyes. It also had antlers(鹿角) on its head. Bunny almost mistook it for a dog.
“Are you a reindeer(驯鹿)?” asked Bunny.
“Yes,” replied the brown animal with antlers. “My name is Ralph.”
“And you were pulling Santa’s sled(雪橇)?”
“I was until I got air-sick,” replied Ralph. “Santa had to leave me here and go on with the other seven reindeer.”
“Isn’t it a bit unusual for a reindeer to get air-sick? I mean, isn’t flying what reindeer are famous for?”
“Not me, I’m afraid. It makes me frightened. I always feel sick when it comes to flying,” replied Ralph. “But everyone wanted me to pull Santa’s sled, so when it was my turn I gave it a try. I’m afraid I just wasn’t cut out for the job. Now I’m trapped here and I don’t know how to get back to the North Pole.”

22、All mammals (哺乳动物) sleep. Some stand up when they are sleeping and others lie down. All people need to sleep too. No one really knows why we sleep, but we know it is important for us to get enough sleep.
It looks as if nothing is happening when we sleep, but our bodies and brains are actually very busy. Our bodies are busy building new cells (细胞). We need them to grow. Without sleep, children do not grow and may get sick more often. During sleep, our brains are busy putting our ideas in order and then storing them in our memories. Without sleep, it is harder to remember things.
Sleep is important. When people do not get enough sleep, they do things more slowly, get sad easily and make mistakes.
We all need sleep, but how much sleep we need changes as we grow up. A newborn baby sleeps from sixteen to twenty hours a day, but as people get older, they need less sleep. The average ten-year-old children sleep ten hours a day. Most adults (成人) spend about eight hours a day sleeping. Some older people only spend about six hours a day sleeping.
We may not know why we sleep, but we know we look better and feel better after a good night’s sleep because our bodies and our brains are ready for a new day.

23、Your friends come to visit you at your home. Should you ask them to take off their shoes? In many countries around the world, taking off your shoes indoors is a polite thing to do. However, it’s actually more than just polite. It’s good hygiene, too.
Bacteria(细菌) like to grow on shoes. Some of them can be dangerous, according to scientists from the University of Houston in the US. One of the most common kinds of bacteria on your shoes is Escherichia coli (大肠杆菌).
Researchers found these bacteria on 96 percent of the shoes they studied. Some types of Escherichia coli can cause diarrhea (腹泻) or even brain diseases. Other bacteria found on shoes can be harmful to our skin, blood and heart.
But we don’t need to worry about this too much. For healthy people, the bacteria found on shoes will likely have little or no risk, according to Live Science. Healthy people have to come into contact with thousands of harmful bacteria in order to become sick.
Also, bacteria mostly stay on the ground. But most of us don’t spend a lot of time on the ground. “In this case, you’re not going to get sick from it.” according to Jonathan Sexton from the University of Arizona, US. However, children who often climb around on the floor and people who are unhealthy should be careful about these kinds of bacteria. For healthy adults, it is not too big of an issue.
