四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Dear Audrey,

You are much older now, and hopefully wiser, although sometimes that’s not the case. You have probably forgotten about me.

I’m 12-year-old you feeling terribly nervous and stressed, hating online learning, in this horrible pandemic... I could go on and on. Does this bring any memory back to you?

Anyway, maybe there are time machines in the time where you are, but there aren’t any here, so I’m doing the next best thing: I’m writing you a letter that I hope you read every year on New Year’s Day, or New Year’s Eve.

I’ve come from 2020 to remind you not to forget. I’m sitting on my bed right now, tears still on my face from a fight with my mom ( I love her more than anything or anyone, but we’ve spent too much time together), and aware of the light blue masks hanging on the hooks next to the door in my kitchen. In a way, it still feels like March, when this whole crazy thing started. I’m sick of it.

I am begging you to remember. I didn’t get to spend Thanksgiving with my beloved grandparents, when I’d been waiting so long to act normally(正常地) with them and pod up. Now, it looks like I won’t be spending Christmas with them normally either. In America (where I live), the Coronavirus numbers are higher than they’ve ever been. I am hoping and am going to pray (祈祷) for a Christmas miracle (奇迹), but I have my doubts because I hoped for an Easter miracle and that didn’t happen.

I am having a hard time and would do anything to get out of 2020 and this pandemic, to see my friends and family normally. You are able to do that. You have what I want so badly. So please, I strongly advise you to enjoy your life, your friends, your family, your experiences.

Remember — everything is replaceable and unimportant, but people are the only true thing that matter in this modern-day world.

Love your life, and be filled with joy this year.

    Sincerely,

You, age 12, Audrey in 2020, the Pandemic Year.

【1】From the passage we know that ________.

A.Audrey is a girl who was born in the year of 2008

B.Audrey is a girl that the writer imagines

C.The writer is confident to have a Christmas miracle

D.The writer has the habit of writing letters

【2】According to the writer, which of the following sentences is true?

A.The older one gets, the wiser he/she will become.

B.People should spend as much time as possible together if they love each other.

C.The writer would take a time machine to visit her future self if she had one.

D.People will always remember what’s happening to them now.

【3】What does “this whole crazy thing” in paragraph four refer to (指的是)?

    A.Her online learning.

    B.Her fight with her mother.

    C.The light blue masks.

    D.This horrible pandemic.

【4】Why does the writer write the litter?

A.To record what is happening to American people.

B.To complain the life she is living now.

C.To remind her future self to enjoy what she will have.

D.To tell us nothing in the world is important.

Robert Fredy was general manager of a large hotel in Ashbury Park, New Jersey. One cold day two years ago when he stopped his car at a traffic light, Stephen Pearman, an out-of-work taxi and truck driver, walked up to Fredy’s car hoping to earn some change by washing his windshield(挡风玻璃). Like many motorists who try to keep the beggars off, Fredy turned on the wipers to show he wasn’t interested. Pearman put his head close to the window. “Come on, mister. Give me chance. I need job”, he said. Something in Stephen Pearman’s voice moved Robert Fredy. In the seconds before traffic started moving again, Fredy handed Pearman a business card and told him to call if he was serious.

“My friends told me he was just pulling my leg,” said Pearman. “But I said, ‘No, he’s a businessman. I need to give it shot. ’”

Two days later, 29-year-old Pearman appeared in the manager’s office of the big hotel. Fredy gave him a job and lent him pocket money while training him.

Today, Pearman works full- time setting up the hotel’s dining halls for business meetings. In the past two years, he has found a flat, married and repaid Fredy’s loans(贷款)

“Mr Fredy gave me a second chance,” says Pearman. “And I took advantage of it. I could have just come here a while and left. But there is no future washing wind- shields. ”

Fredy always keeps away from the street people. “But. Pearman seemed so honest and open, asking for a chance rather than just money, Fredy says. “I don’t hand my business card to just anybody. But I’m glad I did in this case. ”

As a child, I was really afraid of the dark and of getting lost. These fears were very real and caused me some uncomfortable moments.

Maybe it was the strange way things looked and sounded in my own room at night that scared (使惊恐) me so much. There was never complete darkness, but always a streetlight or passing car lights, which made clothes on the back of a chair take on the shape of a wild animal.Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the curtains (窗帘) seem to move when there was no wind.A very low sound in the floor would seem a hundred times louder than in the day.My imagination would run wild, and my heart would beat fast.I would lie very still so that the “enemy” would not discover me.

Another of my childhood fears was that I would get lost, especially on the way home from school.Every morning I got on the school bus right near my home. That was no problem. After school, though, when all the buses were lined up along the street, I was afraid that I would get in the wrong one and be taken to some other strange places. On school or family trips to a park or a museum, I wouldn’t let the leaders out of my sight.

Perhaps one of the worst fears of all I had as a child was that of not being liked or accepted by others.Being popular was so important t o me then, and the fear of not being liked was a serious one.

One of the processes (过程) about growing up is being able to realize and overcome (克服) our fears.Understanding the things that scared us as children helps us achieve greater success later in life.
