  • 25、In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible(负责任) for social progress. Others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth depended on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs(事件). The development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire(渴望)to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the common players, they are strongly against competition. Most of them are young people who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these youngsters, I often observe(观察) in them a desire to fail. They seem to find failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: " I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try." What is not usually accepted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure(估量) of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's self-worth depends on how well one performs in the competition. Both are afraid of not being valued. We can discover a new meaning in competition only as this kind of fear begins to disappear.

【1】What does this passage mainly talk about?

    A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.

    B. Opinions about competition are different among people.

    C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

    D. Failures are necessary experience in competition.

【2】Why do some people favor(赞同) competition according to the passage?

    A. It pushes society forward.

    B. It builds up a sense of duty.

    C. It improves personal abilities.

    D. It encourages efforts.

【3】What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a desire to fail?

    A. One's worth lies in his performance in the competition.

    B. One's success in competition needs great efforts.

    C. One's achievement is decided by his special skills.

    D. One's success is based on how hard he has tried.

【4】Which point of view may the author agree to?

    A. Every effort should be paid back.

    B. Competition should be encouraged.

    C. Winning should be a life-and-death matter.

    D. Fear of failure should be removed in competition.

Have you ever been so worried about something that you have a headache or even can’t sleep at night? Then you cannot pay enough attention during a test or in your study. If so, then you know that is stress. You are worried too much about something. The bad feeling in your mind can make you angry, sad, or scared, and can even give you a stomachache or a headache.

However, some kind of stress is good. Excitement might happen when you are called to give a speech at school. You feel nervous but excited. This kind of stress can help you to get things well done. And you may do a better job in your test if the stress pushes you to prepare more beforehand.

On the other hand, bad stress can last long if you are unable to come over your problems. You may not feel well, if your parents are having a quarrel, if a family member is badly ill, if you’re doing poorly at school, or if anything else makes you unhappy. That kind of stress isn’t going to help you. And it can actually let you do worse in your daily life. The best way to fight the stress is to have a balanced life. Make sure you get enough sleep and eat properly. Have some regular exercise. You should take some time for fun. Get advice from your parents, teachers and friends. • 27、“Don’t tell anyone!” is likely a phrase you have heard before or after someone tells you a secret. But why is it so hard not to spill the beans? One Baylor College of Medicine expert explains why this is a challenge.

“A secret often includes something that someone does not take pride in. They’ve chosen someone to tell the secret, but don’t want other people to know about it because they feel like if it gets out, it could damage (破坏) their fame,” said Dr Asim Shah, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Bavlor. “However, it can be hard for the person to keep that to themselves because it may become a burden (负担).”

As soon as you tell somebody not to repeat your secret, people want to share it with somebody else. In addition most people have a confidant (知己) so when you share information with yours, keep in mind that they likely will share it with their own confidants.

With secrets so often getting out, why do people share them in the first place? “One reason is that people often feel like it will help them keep close friendship with others,” Shah said. However, connecting telling someone your secrets with how close you are to them is not always advisable. It is important for people to understand that they can have close relationships without sharing their secrets necessarily.

“Another reason why people often tell a secret is that they feel guilty about keeping it,” said Shah. “For example, if your friend tells you a secret but you do not share it with your close friends, you may feel guilty about not telling them. If you do not share certain things with your close family members, a sense of distrust can develop. Keeping or sharing secrets often puts people in a position of either gaining or losing the trust of someone.”

He added that people who are more talkative may by accident let a secret out but that does not necessarily mean it is a good idea to share secrets with someone who is quieter. If somebody is quiet and keeps everything in, it may cause them to have more stress, and finally they will talk to somebody else.

If you do not want to be responsible ( 负责的) for keeping someone’s secret, it is best to be honest and tell the person you do not want to know his or her secret.

“If you end up accidentally sharing a secret with somebody else, it is best to be honest and let the person know that you shared his or her secret,” Shah said.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “spill the beans” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A.Tell the secret.

    B.Face the challenge.

    C.Keep the secret.

    D.Avoid the challenge.

【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.It is unnecessary to keep secrets.

B.Close friends should share secrets with each other.

C.Sharing secrets will help you get the trust of someone.

D.Real friendship shouldn’t be based on whether or not secrets are shared.

【3】In Shah’s opinion, if we by accident share our friends’ secrets with others, we should ________.

    A.hide the truth

    B.tell them the truth

    C.break up with them

    D.share a secret with them

【4】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Quiet persons are sure to keep the secret for you.

B.Talkative persons will always let out secrets.

C.Everyone has a confidant to share secrets with.

D.We might hurt our friends if we let out their secrets.

The increase of population and the development of industry have2bringnew problems. One of the biggest3is pollution. Waste water has make our rivers and lakes dirty. It kills our fishes and affects our4drinkwater. Noise pollution makes us talk louder and louder. And air pollution is one of the most serious pollution, too. It affects5['evrɪθɪŋ] in the world.

Cars, planes and factories all pollute our air every day. At times the pollution is so thick6it’s like a quilt(被子)over a city. This kind of quilt is called smog(烟雾).

Many countries are making new laws to fight7[ə'genst] pollution. Factories now must clean their water8it is thrown away and they mustn’t blow dirty smoke into the air.

We need to do many other things. We can put waste in the dustbin and not throw it around. We can go to work by bus or with our friends in the same car. If there are9fewpeople driving , there will be less pollution.

Laws are not good 10. Every person must help to solve pollution problems.
