“Walk! Don’t run!” This is what students are usually told at school. After all, it’s dangerous to run or jump around the corridors(走廊). However, students in a British school are told to do the opposite. Their teachers encourage them to run in the corridors.
Why? Well, that’s because the corridors in the school have been built with special tiles called Pavegen tiles. When the students jump or run on the tiles, lots of electricity will be produced. In 12 months’ time, the tiles can produce enough electricity to fully charge 853 mobile phones or power an electric car to run 12 kilometers. It’s quite amazing, isn’t it? The students can now play freely in the corridors. While they are playing, they help to power the lights and the other electricity equipment in their classrooms.
The special tiles are really a wonderful invention. They can teach the students to be creative. It turns out that electricity can be produced in many different ways rather than only through traditional ones. Are there any other clean energy sources? That’s something for the students to think about.
Pavegen tiles were invented by Laurence Kemball-Cook. He used to study in the British school. Now, he is the CEO of his own company. His tiles have also been tested in many public places.
Laurence has also invented some other useful things, such as special dance floor. It can be used at music festivals. Dancers can charge their mobile phones while dancing on the special floor.

Let’s start with a story I heard the other day about a very proud pig. This pig lived on a farm with a lot of other animals. And of all the animals on the farm, he thought he was the most important. But it was not enough that he himself thought this way. He had to be sure that the other animals thought so, too. So he went up to one of the chickens and asked, “Who is the most important animal on the farm?” Straight away, the chicken answered, “You’re, Master.” Then he asked one of the farm dogs and he got the same reply.
Next, he asked a cow. When the cow seemed uncertain of the right answer, the pig looked angry and showed his teeth. “Oh, you are, of course, Master Pig,” said the cow. “Of course,” the pig said. “There is no doubt about it.”
At last, the pig asked a big horse, “Who is the most important animal on the farm?” The horse lifted one foot, rolled the pig over, and placed his foot on the pig’s head. “All right,” said the pig, “you don’t have to do that just because you don’t know the answer.”

27、Today there are 7.4 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. There are many people to feed. We need more and more food.
One way to produce more food is growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic (遗传的) material. Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified foods, or GM foods.
By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. Scientists make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases; a kind of rice will be grown, for example, which stops people becoming blind.
Rich countries produce GM foods because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.
GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But both rich and poor countries are interested in their uses, and they are not going to go away. In 2050, we may think differently about them.

A. Because they are easy to grow and bring in more money.
B. Because they are easy to grow and very cheap.
