  • 24、We were trapped in the ice. The hole was deeper but the sides of the tunnel were narrowing. We worked harder. The hole grew deeper, but the air in the Nautilus was very bad. Then, the captain had a new idea. He heated water in his batteries and pumped it into the hole. This stopped the sides from narrowing.

It was a terrible night. We had so little air that everybody had a headache. We could hardly breathe. Then, the captain drove the Nautilus into the hole. The ice broke. ① Suddenly, the Nautilus was free. It sailed quickly northwards still under the ice. ② We still had no air. My face was purple, and my lips were blue. I could not breathe, see or hear. I was going to die! ③ Ned and Conseil found some air in one of the diving tanks. They gave it to me. ④ Again and again it hit the ice. Finally, it broke through. Air rushed into the submarine and we could breathe again. We rushed onto the deck, breathing and breathing.

  • 25、The spoken language is very important. Master speaking by continuing to practice. Living in a country where the language is spoken makes this easier, but you can use other methods. Join a club where people speak the language. Make friends with people who speak the language.

Speaking, of course, can’t go without listening. If you want to pronounce a word correctly, first you must hear it correctly. The sounds of the Chinese and English languages are not exactly the same. If you don’t listen carefully, you’ll find it difficult or even impossible to understand the native speakers.

Well, what about writing? Like speaking, it’s to exchange ideas. People generally use shorter words and shorter sentences in their writing. The important thing is to make your idea clear in your head and then to write it in clear lively language.

Chinese students read far too slowly. If you read fast, you understand better. If you read too slowly, by the time you have reached the end of a page you have forgotten what the beginning is about. When you meet with new words, don’t look them up in the dictionary. Guess the meaning from the context. You may not guess quite correctly the first time, but as new words come up again and again in different contexts, their meaning will become clearer and clearer. If you look up every word, you’ll never finish a book.

Students of a foreign language need a particular knowledge, the knowledge of the life, history and geography of the people whose language they are studying. They should study these subjects in the foreign language, not only in translation. In this way one can kill two birds with one stone: learn a foreign language and get some knowledge of the foreign country at the same time.

【1】How many points are mentioned in the learning of language according to the passage?

    A.Two.

    B.Three.

    C.Four.

    D.Five.

【2】What did the writer tell us in his first point?

    A.How to read and write.

    B.Why speaking is much easier.

    C.How to practice spoken language.

    D.Why spoken English is important.

【3】What does the underlined word “exchange” in Paragraph 3 mean in Chinese?

    A.改变

    B.构思

    C.交换

    D.表述

【4】What did the writer advise to do in his last point?

A.Catch two birds with one stone.

B.Learn two languages at a time.

C.Study all the subjects in a foreign language.

D.Get some knowledge of the foreign country.

【5】What’s the fourth paragraph mainly about?

A.How to read the passages faster.

B.How to guess the meaning from the context.

C.How to look up new words in the dictionary.

D.How to grasp the general meaning of a passage.

  • 26、When Friday could talk well, I asked him a thousand questions about his country and the people there. I understood that they were cannibals. “They sometimes came to the island to eat their prisoners,” he said. He also told me that there were seventeen white men like me in his country.

One day Friday and I were standing together on top of a hill in the west part of the island when he suddenly shouted, “Look, Master! My country!” He was pointing at the land in the distance. There was a big smile on his face.

“Do you want to go back there, Friday?” I asked him.

    “Oh, yes!” was his reply.

“Is it far? Can you go there by boat?”

    “Yes,” he replied.

    I showed him mine.

    “Too small,” he said.

So I took him to see my first boat in the woods. It was twenty-three years old now and full of holes.

“This boat is good,” he said and then he laughed, “But it is too old.”

“We can make another one,” I replied. “Then you can go back to your country.”

Friday suddenly looked very sad and I saw tears in his eyes.

“Why do you want to send Friday away?” he asked. “Friday doesn’t want to go without Master.”

“I’m not going to send you away, Friday,” I said, “I’m going to come with you. Come on! Let’s look for a good tree for our boat!”

There were lots of big trees in the woods, but it was important to find one near the water. I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice! Friday soon found a good one and we cut it down. We worked hard for a month. When our boat was ready, we pulled it into the water. Then I started to make preparations for our journey. We needed to take a lot of food with us.

【1】What does the underlined word “cannibals” in Paragraph 1 mean in Chinese?

    A.商人

    B.食人者

    C.海员

    D.幸存者

【2】From “I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice!”, we can know “_______”.

A.I once made a boat full of holes.

B.I once made a boat out of small trees.

C.I didn’t want to spend long time making a boat again.

D.I didn’t want to make a boat far from the water again.

【3】Why did Friday suddenly look sad and cry?

A.Because he didn’t want to return to his country.

B.Because the boat was either too small or too old.

C.Because he didn’t want to leave his master alone.

D.Because his master told him to make a big boat.

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Friday was very loyal and hard-working.

B.Seventeen white men were in Friday’s country.

    C.They spent twenty-three years making a boat.

D.The journey to Friday’s country was short.

  • 27、Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B.C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.

Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones? Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. For most people, the left hand is used to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.

No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents. If a person does not receive the gene(基因) for right-handedness, he / she may become either right-handed or left-handed according to the chance and the people they work or live with.

Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual. A long time ago, left-handed children were made to use their right hands like other children, but today they don’t have to.

1What did the scientists find after studying works of art made at different times in history?

    A. The art began from 1,500 B. C.

    B. The works of art ended in the 1950s.

    C. Most people shown in the works of art are right-handed.

    D. Most people shown in the works of art are left-handed.

2How many people in the world are left-handed now?

    A. About 10%-15%. B. About 50%.

    C. About 40%. D. The passage doesn’t tell us.

3What is the left hand for most people used to do?

    A. It’s used to work with things.

    B. It’s used to find or hold things.

    C. It’s used to make a person’s eyes work together.

    D. It’s the centre for thinking and doing problems.

4According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

    A. Left-handedness is cleverer than right-handedness.

    B. Today children are not made to use their right hands only.

    C. No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed.

    D. Scientists think there must be some reason why people become left-handed.

5The best TITLE for this passage is _______.

    A. Scientists’ New Inventions B. Left-handed People

    C. How Brains Control Hands D. Which Hand
