四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、

Have you ever looked out of the window of a passenger plane from 30,000 feet and wondered how people can have any major effect on the Earth? I have. But it is now becoming pretty clear that we are causing a great deal of damage (破坏) to the natural environment. And the planes that rush us in comfort to destinations (目的地) around the globe lead to one of the biggest environmental problems that we face today—global warming.

For those of us lucky enough to have money and time to spend, there are a huge number of attractive places to explore. The cost of air transport has decreased (减少) rapidly over the years, and for many people, especially in rich countries, it is now possible to fly around the world for less money.

Unfortunately, planes produce far more carbon dioxide (CO2 ) than any other form of public transport, and CO2 is now known to be a greenhouse gas causing the temperature of the Earth to rise. Scientists predict that in the near future the climate in Britain will follow that of the Mediterranean (地中海), a popular destination for British holidaymakers flying off to enjoy the sun. If global warming continues, we may also find that many tourist destinations such as the Maldives (马尔代夫) have disappeared under water because of rising sea levels.

So what can be done to solve the problem? Well, although engineers are making more efficient engines and researching other fuels (燃料) such as hydrogen, it will be a long time before air travel is not damaging to the environment. Governments don’t seem to be taking the problem seriously, so it is up to travelers to do what they can to help.

The most obvious way of dealing with the problem is to not travel by plane at all. Environmental groups such as Friends of the Earth encourage people to travel by train and plan holidays nearer home. However, with prices of flights at an all-time low, and exotic destinations more popular than ever, it is hard to ask British tourists to choose London instead of Beijing or Tokyo.

However, there is a way of offsetting (抵消) the carbon dioxide we produce when we travel by plane. A company called Future Forests offers a service that can reduce CO2. The Future Forest website finds the amount of CO2 you are responsible for producing on your flight. Then you will pay a small fee (费用) to the company. And it can help you plant the number of trees that will absorb this CO2.

Yesterday I returned to Japan from England, and was happy to pay Futured Forests £25 to plant the three trees which balance my share of the CO2 produced by my return flight. Now the only thing making me lose sleep is jet lag (时差效应).

【1】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A.The damage caused by public transport.

B.The possible effects of planes on global warming.

C.The main reasons for rising the global temperature.

D.The predictions of some disappearing tourist destinations.

【2】The word “exotic” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “__________”.

    A.interesting

    B.foreign

    C.similar

    D.beautiful

    【3】From the passage, we know__________.

A.passengers can pay extra fees to offset the CO2 produced by their flights

B.the climate in Britain is similar to that of the Mediterranean now

C.environmental groups encourage people to plant more trees

D.it’s getting more and more expensive to travel by plane

【4】What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To discuss the bad effects of CO2.

B.To compare different reasons for global warming.

C.To introduce the famous tourist destinations in the world.

D.To call attention to the environmental damage caused by taking planes.

I often ride bikes around Australia and am about to cycle the Nullabor to raise money for multiple sclerosis (MS, 多发性硬化症). I have MS myself, but cycling is a pain-free activity for me. I feel quite relaxed after cycling. But a not-so-kind person stole all of my bikes when I was traveling, which made it impossible for me to continue cycling at that time.

The human kindness I have met since this happened was so amazing. A kind lady bought a mountain bike for me to continue riding. A gentleman gave another bike to me to continue training on roads. It was almost impossible to find a bike in my size because the bike I had before was very short and required an extra-small frame (框架). And there is a bike supply and demand issue (供需问题). My hometown got behind me to raise some money. With this money, I have bought a bike that is just the right size for me.

So far, people have offered me places to stay, welcomed me into their warm homes and made sure I have enough water when riding long distances (距离). They also put money in my hands in the street to help me reach my goal. The stolen bikes turned into an interview with ABC Radio and papers in Tasmania.

My point is that there are so many good and kind-hearted people out there. My experience is that people are mainly kind and beautiful. I could never doubt (怀疑)the fact that the world holds more good and kind people than unkind people. That, in itself, is hope! It won’t be long now before I hit the road again and do my bit to give back kindness.

【1】What stopped the writer from cycling at first?

A.People were not allowed to cycle around Australia.

B.He had MS and was not able to move around.

C.His bikes were stolen when he was travelling.

【2】In Paragraph 2, the writer wants to ____________.

    A.explain how he raised money

B.show the human kindness he met

    C.talk about his difficulties

【3】What does the underlined expression “got behind” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Suggested.

    B.Required.

    C.Helped.

【4】What can we infer(推断)from the text?

A.It is painful for the writer to ride bicycles.

B.The writer’s bike was quite different from the normal bikes.

C.The writer won’t continue cycling in the future.

【5】What’s the best title for this passage?

    A.Kindness around us.

    B.An amazing sport.

    C.The stolen bikes.

  • 26、The Oil Lamp and the Lighthouse

On an island off the coast of a rocky shore stood a great lighthouse. During the day, the white walls of the lighthouse shined under the sunlight, while at night it burned a light for those at sea. Many people visited the lighthouse, and when they did, they commented on its size and strength and admired the beauty that it added to the surroundings. Some told its keeper how its light had saved them during a storm.

All loved the lighthouse except a little oil lamp that lived in the lighthouse. By day it hung forgotten at the bottom of the stairs. At dusk it helped the keeper of the lighthouse make his way from the bottom of the stairs to his bedroom. It seemed to the oil lamp that he is not important. To his way of thinking, his shortcomings were made clear by his nearness to one so much greater than he. Always, the oil lamp labored under this heaviness of heart.

Then one day, after a brilliant afternoon when many visitors had come to play on the sandy beach, there was a knock at the door. It was a boy, searching for a friend who was lost. The sun had set and what had seemed such friendly shores hours before was now dark and cold.

The keeper quickly took the youth inside and hugged him into a blanket. Then he reached to the hook between the door and the stairs and took down the little oil lamp. After carefully making sure that the tank was full of oil, the keeper lit the lamp and whispered. “Burn bright tonight, my dear friend. I cannot take the lighthouse with me. He serves his purpose here, but you were made for times like this. It is now that I need you most!”

In that instant, all of the oil lamp’s misgivings were replaced by joy—joy in knowing that here was something only he could do. All through the night, through bushes, the oil lamp burned brighter and more steadily than ever before. He had to; the keeper was depending on him. At last the lost boy was found and brought safely back to the lighthouse and his friend.

Never again did the oil lamp doubt his place or purpose. He had learned a great lesson that night: he was happiest and most useful being himself.

    D.he found his own value

【3】Which of the following is true?

B.Many visitors thanked the oil lamp for saving them

C.The lighthouse sometimes doubt his place or purpose.

【4】What can we learn from the story?

    A.Every coin has two sides.

B.Each one has his strong points.

C.A friend in need is a friend indeed.

D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

  • 27、   Making a good job choice is almost the same as choosing a good life. So, choosing a job is one of the most important decisions to make in life. For my job, there are three important things that I will consider.

The first one and also the most important one is that I must work in an area I like. If you find a job that you enjoy, then you won't feel that you're working at all. I would like to work in an area where I can be more creative. I would like to be the most important member there. All this is possible only if I like what I do.

The second one is that the area of my work must lead me to solve some new and hard problems. I would like to stay in the same area for a long time, so the work must provide enough problems. More than just working to live, I enjoy making a difference and trying my best to do it. In order to do that, I may spend more time and energy on my job, so I would also like to be well remunerated for my hard work. Then I can live a comfortable life with this hardwon money and provide the best for my family.

The third important thing is that I would like to work in an area that would help other people, such as the army, training or schools. In such areas, I can help to develop the abilities of others and bring out their best. It would be a satisfying job to help young people to become the best that they can be. When I become old, I would like to look back with a great sense of satisfaction that thousands of people have become better persons through my work.

All in all, everyone should keep trying his best and making many preparations to get the dream job. He should decide what he wants to be. Then, he should decide how he works towards it. He should study the proper courses, read the books and speak to knowledgeable persons in that field.

1According to the passage, making a good job choice probably means ________.

    A.being a good family member B.choosing a good life

    c. can help others become better

    d. is near home

    A.abc B.bde C.ace D.cde

3The underlined word "remunerated" in the passage means "________".
