24、 Confucius (551-479 BC) was a great thinker and teacher in the Spring and Autumn Period of China. He was born in Qufu, capital of the state of Fu (part of Shandong). He acted as an official (官员) there. But he was perhaps a better thinker than he was an official and he ended up having to leave the state of Lu. He spent 13 years travelling around the other states, spreading his ideas. And he tried to teach people that peace was very important for a healthy society (社会). However, it was not until the rule of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty (156-87 BC) that his ideas were finally put into practice. In his last few years, he returned to Qufu where he spent the rest of his life teaching. His teachings were recorded by his followers in a book called Lunyu.
Confucius’ teachings formed the base of Chinese thought. Confucius thought everyone should develop virtues (美德) and always do the right thing. Confucius’ thought is considered to have been the necessity of Eastern thought.
To help people understand how to behave (表现) towards others, he taught five virtues accepted by all Chinese. They are ren (kindness, charity), yi (fairness), li (ceremony, tradition), zhi (knowledge), and xin (trust). Another virtue is xiao. Xiao is the duties (责任) a person has to their parents. It means loving, respecting, following the parents advice, and taking care of one’s parents in their old age. Xiao forms the base of a peaceful society. And he (和) is the final goal according to his thought. It means social peace.
Here’s one of Confucius’ famous sayings, “Do not do to others as you do not wish to be done to you.” Another saying of his is “In the company of two others, I can always find one worthy of being my teacher.”
It is clear that Confucius’ thought will continue to be a necessary part of Chinese culture. And it will continue to do something good to the development of China and even the whole world.

26、 Anyone who has experienced a cyclone (飓风) will tell you how terrible it can be. High winds and lots of rain can destroy a city in less than an hour.
A big cyclone, named Cyclone Debbie, hit Australia's east coast at the end of March. Winds as fast as 263km/h destroyed houses, trees, cars and boats. Sea levels rose and flooded coastal towns, while rivers also flooded. Many cities near rivers went underwater. Hundreds of thousands of people had to leave their homes and farms, and at least eight people died. The cyclone lasted for about three days, but the flooding is still happening two weeks later. Some cities never recover from a cyclone, while it takes others years to rebuild.
A tropical cyclone (热带气旋) begins when a group of thunderstorms meet over warm, tropical waters. Lots of air and water is sucked into the clouds from the ocean. Because Earth is rotating(旋转) the clouds start to spiral(盘旋上升). That is why the tropical cyclone has a curved(弯曲的) shape when you see it on a map. For this reason, tropical cyclones cannot form near the Equator(赤道) because Earth's rotation isn't big enough there. When the wind speed increases to 120 km/h, it changes from a tropical cyclone to a hurricane, typhoon (台风) or cyclone.
So what's the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and a typhoon? The answer is actually quite simple.
All three are the same. We just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific Oceans around the US, it is called hurricane. The same type of storm in the North Pacific near China is called a typhoon and cyclones form in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean near Australia.
【1】Which of the following about Cyclone Debbie is NOT true?
A.It hit Australia's east coast in March.
B.The wind speed reached 263 km/h.
C.It caused a huge loss for coastal towns.
D.The flooding stopped after three days.
【2】How does a tropical cyclone happen?
A.When a group of thunderstorms meet warm, tropical waters.
B.When the water in the ocean flows in a curved shape.
C.When a group of thunderstorms meet near an Equator.
D.When the wind speed reaches over 120 km/h.
【3】How can we tell the difference between a cyclone, a hurricane, and 8 typhoon?
A.From the time it takes place.
B.From where it takes place.
C.From how it takes place.
D.From how many people it kills.
27、No one knows when the first kite was made. The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. General Han Hsin was the leader of a rebel army(叛军). He wanted to overthrow(推翻) a cruel king, but he had only a few men. Hsin decided to dig a tunnel into the king’s castle. He flew a kite to judge how long the tunnel should be. The men in the tunnel took the kite string with them. When they reached the end of the string(线) , they knew it was time to dig up. They came up in the castle courtyard and defeated the king.
Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown in the fall to give thanks for a good harvest. Stalks of rice were tied to the kites. Kites were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had had their first son.
Today in Japan kites are often flown as part of a celebration, such as the beginning of a new year. The kites are painted to look like animals, heroes and gods. Small kites as well as huge ones are made. Kite festivals are held each year in many areas of the country.
Kites have been used for scientific purposes in the western world. Most people have heard of Benjamin Franklin and his kite. Franklin had been studying electricity. He thought that lightning was a form of electricity, but he wasn’t sure. In 1752, he tried to find out. He flew a kite in a storm. A key was attached to the kite. When sparks jumped from the key, it proved his idea was correct.
In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite. He used this kite to test ideas about fight. From 1898 to 1933, the United States Weather Bureau used box kites to gather weather data. The Wright Brothers also experimented with kites. What they learned helped them make the first airplane flight in 1903.
