Libraries give kids a quiet and safe place to read and learn. For over 100 years, libraries have played an important role in Americans' education. 1. But how are these book-filled buildings changing with the times? You may be surprised to find out.
Benjamin Franklin famously founded America's first lending library in 1731. But the public library system got its biggest development in the American history in the late 1800s. Businessman Andrew Camegie donated millions of dollars to help build free public libraries across the country. Carnegie believed that libraries could offer the chances to Americans, young and old. 2. He knew that the more libraries there were, the more people would have chances to read.
If you can easily find a public library in your community, you'll get more opportunities. After all, the United States has 9,225 public libraries. Today, libraries keep growing and seven tenths of the them have free Internet. 3. It provides much more information and chances to ask for jobs online.
Libraries are also teaching kids about the fun of reading. The new program "Read! Build! Play!" adds reading into playtime. As kids listen to a book that is being read aloud, they use Legos (乐高积木) to build images (图像) from the story happily. 4. 如今的图书馆总是在找寻有创意的项且来吸引人.

24、On Nov 8, Wang Yaping, a female astronaut (宇航员) of Shenzhou XIII, became China’s first and the world’s 16th female space walker. The expected six-month journey in space has left many curious about the differences between male and female astronauts, especially in terms of performing extravehicular (舱外的) activities (EVAs). Except body challenges, female astronauts have special advantages.
Understanding between astronauts is very important for carrying out EVAs, which is based on excellent communication skills. Women are better in communication and language expression, and this helps female astronauts do extravehicular activities, according to Yang Yuguang, head of Space Transportation Committee.
Men and women are different in body size, which also gives women special advantages for spacewalks. “Their generally smaller size is an advantage, as women will be able to control their weight better and perform different kinds of tasks,” Pang told China Daily.
Women in general weigh less, eat less food, use less oxygen(氧气), and therefore require less fuel(燃料) to get into space. An astronaut must weigh between 55 kilograms and 70 kilograms to fit in the cabin (舱) of spacecraft and use less fuel, according to CGIN.
A different body shape requires a different spacesuit. A spacesuit was prepared for Wang’s extravehicular activities, which was lighter than the males’. Designers optimized the pattern of this spacesuit in the lower part area to make it more suitable for astronauts with slimmer bodies.
According to Pang, many studies have found that female astronauts are more suitable for space tasks, and have advantages over male astronauts in qualities such as attention to detail and thinking thoughtfully .
Men do better in shorter-term, goal-oriented (目标导向的) situations while women are better in longer-term habitation-type (居住类) situations, according to National Geographic.
Women’s taking part in EVAs is an important part of space tasks, and we are seeing history thanks to Wang’s bravery, according to Yang.

How funny would it be to see memes(表情包) in our textbooks? Fourteen high school students have made it come true.
They wrote a set of creative textbooks that include five subjects: Chinese, English, maths, chemistry and physics. They share their notes and experiences to help you prepare for high school entrance exams. You can see funny memes almost everywhere in their text-books. The language they use is not too serious.
Each textbook has its own style, too. The English textbook introduces movies, TV series and so on. The chemistry textbook has wuxia characters. There is a boy named Shangguan Huaxue in the book. He meets a girl and they learn chemistry together. It has ancient poems and wuxia-style descriptions.
Yan Zuhuai, a 15-year-old top student at Chengdu No. 7 High School, is the textbooks’ editor-in-chief(主编). He got the idea to create the books in June. “Many underclassmen wanted me to share my notes with them. When I saw people sharing bikes, I thought I could share knowledge as well,” Yan said.
But when he put all of his notes together, he found them boring. Realizing that his classmates enjoy online novels and memes, he decided to add these things and invited 13 students to join him in creating them.
Their first drafts(草稿) came out in August. Students and teachers praised them. But Yan felt the books needed to be improved. In October, he and his team learned how to use the design software to improve the books. The final versions came out at the end of December in 2018.

27、When the great library of Alexandria was burned, the story goes that one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and a poor man bought it for a few coins.
The book wasn’t very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting. It was a thin paper on which was written the secret of the touchstone (试金石)! The touchstone was a small pebble (卵石) that could turn any common metal into gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles were cold.
So the man sold his house, bought a tent, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He thought that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and put them down again, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea. The days turned into months and the months into years.
One day, however, about midafternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity. Unless we are vigilant, it’s easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is at hand. And it’s just as easy to throw it away.
