24、It was Jennifer Williams’s mother who made her interested in books lifelong. As a librarian (图书管理员), she read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to preschool” Williams told vadogwood. com, a local news site. “Until we went to college.”
When Williams, now 54, became a teacher in Danville, Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to develop reading habits.
“It’s very easy for teachers of young children to find out which kids read and who do not,” she said. “It’s clear at the end of the first day of school.” To Williams, the way to solve the problem was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, as part of a civil (市政的) event called Engage Danville, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.
“Anybody could do that,” she said. “I wanted to do something that’s going to go with my faith (信仰), my work rules, my everything.”
In order to realize her dream, she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number, but as Williams posted on Facebook: “Don’t complain in the bedrooms if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.”
So she got to work, first by roping in friends to donate books or money to buy books. Before long, as news of Williams’ project spread, strangers started leaving boxes of books at her front door. As quickly as the books come in, Williams gives them to local schools—free of charge—and also gave away books to little free libraries around her city of 41000 just over the North Carolina border (边界). She also hosts a book club for people in the local jail (监狱).
In the four years, she’s been doing all this, the Book Lady, as Williams has come to be known, has given away more than 78, 000 books—only 922, 000 more to reach her goal. And she’s not slowing down. It’s too important for kids with few choices.
“Reading can take you anywhere,” she told a reporter. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.”

25、Young people and older people do not always agree. They sometimes have different ideas about living, working and playing. But in one special program in New York State, adults and teenagers live together in a friendly way.
Each summer 200 teenagers and 50 adults live together for eight weeks as members of a special work group. Everyone works several hours each day. They do so not just to keep busy but to find meaning and enjoyment in work. Some teenagers work in the woods or on the farms near the village. Some learn to make things like tables and chairs and build houses. The adults teach them these skills.
There are several free hours each day. Weekends are free, too. During the free hours some of the teenagers learn photo taking or painting. Others sit around and talk or sing.
In this program the teenagers and the adults make the rules together. If someone breaks a rule, the problem goes before the whole group. They talk about it and ask, “Why did it happen? What should we do about it?”
One of the teenagers has said something about his experience, “You stop thinking only about yourself. You learn to think about the group.”

27、
Dear Sommer and Angelina,
I'd like to give you some advice to help you deal with the trouble you might have on your life journeys.
I have always tried to be present for you no matter how old you were or where we were. I wanted you to know being present builds trust and that trust increases confidence. Confidence makes it possible for you to look forward and dream more. When you are present, you are seeing, hearing and feeling another person. Being present is the greatest gift you can give them, and is the greatest way to connect with them more closely.
You were born with gifts that your brother does not have. You know how happy you feel when you are doing what you love. So please, please, please follow your passion. Don't let anyone make you do anything that doesn't feel natural. You know what makes you excited better than anyone else. The sooner you find your passion, the greater success you will achieve.
Lastly, my loves, never look back. You are blind to what is behind you while backing up(倒车)a car. If you keep looking back in life, you may feel upset when seeing things that you did not notice before.
I know what you are thinking: Why do dad and I always have our old family photos playing on Apple TV? Because your family is your foundation(根基). When we talk about the family, we should be with you everywhere you are.
Your mom,
Angela

28、 About every four years, new astronauts are accepted, it is that time again! As someone with such experience, I want to share some ideas with those who are trying to apply (申请) for this job.
【1】 you don’t want to lose the chance to be an astronaut, you must have already been at the top of your field. But once you are chosen, you will work in a very different environment. You will do things that you have never done 【2】. So, it is really important to be good at dealing with new situations.
Make sure your family and friends strongly support (支持) your dream, because you will be away from home for a long time. But don’t 【3】 and we will be here for you. In the astronaut office, we don’t just work together—we live together. So, it is important that we can trust each other and face the difficulties together.
It is really not 【4】 to be a real astronaut at last. In 2016, more than 18,300 people applied, but only 11 new astronauts graduated (毕业). Maybe 【5】 is perfect for everything but he still can’t succeed at last. However, if you do not apply, you will never be chosen. If you are not successful this time, don’t give up and 【6】 again. It takes most of us a few times to make it.
I’d share with you one last 【7】: Do things because you love them. Fly because you love to fly. When you do what you love, you will not only do it 【8】 but also feel happier.
