I have always heard that walking under a ladder (梯子) brings bad luck, but I’ve never thought so. I have walked under ladders many times, but I have never met anything bad before. It’s the same with black cats. People say if a black cat crosses before you, it means bad luck. I have never thought that until this afternoon. But ever since I heard my student Sam’s story, I’ve begun thinking about whether it was true.
This afternoon, Sam was walking down the street thinking about something, so he didn’t notice where he was going. He walked right under a ladder standing against a building. A black cat ran out of a door just at that moment, and Sam fell over it. His head hit the ladder. A man who was washing the window was at the top of the ladder and the dirty water went down through the air. Poor Sam! He got wet all over!

23、The Lost Airplane
“We’re leaving!” Dad called.
Cody was about to race downstairs when he noticed the tiny airplane on his cousin’s desk. “It would be fun to take it to the beach,” he thought. “I don’t think Dave will mind.” Cody put the airplane into the pocket of his swimsuit.
On the beach, Cody made a runway (机场的跑道) in the sand. Then he took out the airplane and imagined it taking off.
“Cody, are you coming with us?” Dad called. Dad and Uncle Jeff couldn’t wait to go surfing.
Cody took his bodyboard and ran after them. They rode wave after wave. Soon Cody’s teeth were chattering from the cold. He was glad when they decided to head back to their place on the sand.
Resting on the beach, Cody enjoyed the warm sunshine. But with a sudden fear, he sat up. “Where was the airplane?” He searched the sand around him, but he found only broken seashells. He kept looking for the airplane while eating lunch. But as it became clear that the airplane was lost, he lost his appetite (胃口) as well.
Cody was quiet on the way back home, wondering how to tell Dave about it. Slowly he climbed upstairs. On the very last step, he felt something sharp in his pocket. “Could it be?” His fingers closed around the airplane in disbelief. He must have put it into his pocket in his rush to go surfing! Awesome—now he wouldn’t have to tell Dave about it!
But Cody didn’t feel relieved (如释重负的). He knew he had to say sorry to Dave.
“I’m so sorry,” Cody said after telling Dave what had happened.
