六、阅读理解 (共3题,共 15分)
  • 21、Many people think that the dinosaur is the biggest animal that ever lived. They are wrong. The world’s biggest animal is still living, and it lives in the sea. It is called the Blue Whale. The Blue Whale can be as long as 30 meters and weighs as much as 1,000 kilos. The largest dinosaur weighed only 500 kilos.

The whale is not only the world’s biggest animal, but also is one of the cleverest. We know that whales can talk to each other though we do not know what they are saying. We do not yet know how to speak to a whale. One day perhaps we shall learn to speak to whales, and then they will be able to tell us about themselves.

Whales are part of a family of animals called cetaceans(鲸类动物). They are animals that live in the sea. But unlike fish, they do not lay eggs. They have live babies in the same way as cows and cats do, and give their babies milk.

There is a famous White Whale called Moby Dick. He is in a story written by the American writer, Herman Melville. In this story, a sailor called Captain Ahab spends a lot of time trying to find and kill Moby Dick. Sadly, there are not many kinds of whales left. Men have killed them for thousands of years for food and other things. However, there are now laws to stop people killing most kinds of whales, so perhaps there will be more of them in the years to come.

    【1】The article is about ________.

    A.killing whales

    B.the largest animals

    C.what whales eat

    D.dangerous animals in the sea

    【2】The biggest whales are ________.

    A.Right Whales

    B.White Whales

    C.Killer Whales

    D.Blue Whale

    【3】Whales can ________.

    A.lay eggs

    B.talk to each other

    C.tell us about themselves

    D.live on land

    【4】Moby Dick ________.

    A.is a whale in a story

    B.is an American

    C.knows Herman Melville

D.has a friend called Captain Ahab

【5】There are not many whales left because ________.

A.they are part of a family of animals called cetaceans

B.people have killed a lot of them

    C.they do not lay eggs

    D.there are laws against them

  • 22、In ancient (古代的) times, people tried to explain the world based on what they saw. People saw that the sun came up from one side of the earth and went down on the other side. So they believed that the sun traveled around the earth. Going directly from observation (观察) to conclusion (结论) is called non-scientific thinking.

Here is an example of non-scientific thinking. Maybe you had a stomachache, and ate some chocolates. An hour later, you felt much better. You might think that it was the chocolates that made you feel better. But there are other possible explanations. Maybe you had taken some medicine an hour earlier, and it took a while to work. Maybe enough time had passed, and you would have felt better without eating the chocolates.

While the scientific method is a way of thinking that helps you to avoid drawing wrong conclusions. It helps you to avoid no-scientific thinking. It reminds you to take your first conclusion as one of several possible conclusions. It also reminds you to find evidence (证据) to support your conclusion.

The five steps in the scientific method begin by questioning an observation, and end with a conclusion that is based on evidence. Step 1 is to ask a question about your observation, such as, “What makes a stomachache feel better?” Step 2 is to state a possible answer to the question, such as, “Chocolates make a sick stomach feel better.” Step 3 is to test. You could wait until you have a stomachache again, eat some chocolates, and see what happens. You could ask a lot of people if eating chocolates had ever made a stomachache feel better. Step 4 is to think about the findings—think about what happened when you made tests. Step 5 is to draw a conclusion—and share it with others.

【1】Why does the writer use the example of the sun and the earth in Paragraph 1?

A.To show what non-scientific thinking is like.

B.To prove that the sun travels around the earth.

C.To help people explain the world around them.

D.To tell us people in ancient times were clever.

【2】What do you know about the steps in scientific thinking?

A.Many findings are from what you see.

    B.Conclusions usually come from testing.

C.Interviewing is a quick way to get answers.

D.Questions are more important than answers.

【3】What is the passage mainly about?

A.The reasons why scientific thinking is more popular.

B.The possible explanations for non-scientific thinking.

C.The differences between scientific and non-scientific thinking.

D.The conclusions made by scientific and non-scientific thinking.

  • 23、Ray Charles, a black singer and pianist of the USA. He had won 12 Grammy Awards (格莱美奖) and performed at 10, 000 concerts around the world. Many musicians called him simply “The Genius” (天才).

Ray Charles was born into a poor family, without a father. When he was 5 years old, his younger brother died, and around the same time, Charles started to lose his sight. By the age of 7 he was completely blind. He had already been learning the piano for a year, and when he went blind, his mother knew this would be the only way he would make any money in the future. All his life, Charles remembered her saying: “Do it right, or don’t do it at all.”

Later he went to a school for blind and deaf children. There the teachers also encouraged him to study music. Sadly, while he was still at school, his mother died. He left school and in the early 1950s Charles organized a group of players. He sang, played the piano and wrote music.

He made many classical CDs with famous artists such as Elton John and the Beatles.

In 2003 a film of his life Ray was made. The part of Charles was played by a younger actor and musician called Jamie Foxx. The film director brought Foxx to meet Charles. After they had been playing together for two hours, Charles, then aged 73, jumped up and said, “He’s the one... he can do it.” A year later, Charles died aged 74. The film of his life has been as popular as his songs and means that the memory of Charles’ music will live on.
