  • 24、   There once lived a man with his wife and children in a very small house. There was always noise in his house as his children played, laughed and sang. He could find no peace at all.

Life in this noisy house was unbearable (无法容忍的). So the man decided to turn to a wise old woman nearby. He told her about his problem. As she was a wise lady, she had an answer for him at once.

“Go home and bring all of your farm animals to live in your house,” advised the woman. “Bring in your sheep, horses, cows, chickens…” The man thought it was not a good idea. But since the old woman was known for her wisdom, he agreed to do as she said. He went home and brought inside all the farm animals he had. As you can imagine, it was out of order at home. The animals made all kinds of noise. The dogs barked. The sheep cried.

The man could find no peace at all. So he went back to ask the wise old lady. But he agreed to follow her instructions. He returned to his house and drove all the animals outside. Surprisingly, there was peace in his home.

  • 25、   China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: The way people shop at markets.

People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.

However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual.

Also, you can buy a small amount(数量) of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shopkeepers even help you peel( ) and cut them. But shopkeepers in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes. The difference could be due to the different weather.

Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of keeping food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.

1In southern China, at a time people usually buy   .

A.a small amount of food B.a large amount of food

C.enough food for a week D.a lot of meat and vegetables

2What may shopkeepers do if you buy fruits in the south?

    A.They’ll well laugh at you.

B.They’ll only sell them in boxes and baskets.

C.They’ll peel and cut them for you.

D.They’ll only sell a single apple or pear.

3What does the underlined phrase “due to” mean in Chinese?

    A.因为 B.所以 C.然而 D.但是

4Why do many northern Chinese have the habit of keeping food?

A.Because the weather is always hot and wet.

B.Because food goes bad quickly and easily there.

C.Because the weather is usually cold and dry.

D.Because they live far away from the market.

5What is the passage mainly talking about?

    A.Different weather in China.

    B.Different living habits in China.

    C.Southern Chinese and northern Chinese.

    D.Southern China and northern China.

  • 26、   Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even console (安慰) him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks all on his own. He seemed so shut away inside himself. Try as I did, I could not reach him.

Then one day I was in the kitchen here, when I saw him hurrying down the hill, waving his stick and shouting to me. “I’ve got it,” he cried, as he came in, “I’ve got it at last.” He showed me the end of his stick. It was white. “See that, Millie?” “Chalk! It’s chalk underground, isn’t it?”

    “So?” I said.

“You know the famous White Horse on the hillside at Uffington, the one they carved(雕刻) out of the chalk a thousand years ago? That horse never died, did it? It’s still alive, isn’t it? Well, that’s what we’re going to do, so he will never be forgotten. We’ll carve The White Prince out on the hillside—he’ll be there forever, and he’ll be white forever too. ”

“It’ll take a bit of time, won’t it?” I said.

“We’ve got plenty, haven’t we?” he replied, with the same smile he had smiled at me when he was a ten-year-old boy asking me if he could come back and mend my kite for me.

Every spare hour we had, we were up there scraping (刨土) away with spades (铲子),  and we had buckets () to carry away the earth. It was hard, back-breaking work, but it was a labour (劳动) of love. We did it, Bertie and I, we did it together—paws, claws, tail, mane, until he was complete and perfect in every detail.

It was just after we’d finished that the butterflies first came. We noticed that when the sun comes out after the rain in the summer, the butterflies—Adonis Blues, they are, I looked them up – come out to drink on the chalk face. Then The White Prince becomes a butterfly lion, and breathes again like a living creature (动物).

So now you know how Bertie’s white lion became The White Prince and how The White Prince became our butterfly lion.

    (Adapted from The Butterfly Lion)

  • 27、   When I was younger, I wished for a Porsche and a big house. That was my idea of success. I took all the advanced classes possible and took the exams with my mind set on going to a key school. I just knew that I would somehow become famous and be able to afford that car and the dream house. All the way through junior year, my mind was planning this beautiful future.

Then in the eleventh grade, many losses changed my mind. First, one of my friends died at the age of 16. Soon after, my great-grandmother passed away, and on the same day, my beloved fourth-grade teacher. They left me not knowing what to do or where to go. Death had never touched me so closely.

After a long period of emptiness, it finally struck me; life is not promised and neither is my future success. While I was going through the actions in an attempt to achieve material success, I was not enjoying my daily life. I was just existing. I realized that life has more purposes than getting materials, which will only be yours until you can no longer keep up with the payments. I realized that finding inner peace, purpose and happiness will stick with you forever and that is real success.

Enjoying life's great changes makes a person more successful than a wealthy person who is not satisfied and takes everything for granted(把……当成理所当然). The summer before senior year, my attitude changed greatly. Instead of memorizing facts, I began learning information. Instead of focusing on the future, I focused on today and the successes that come with it.

I still make excellent grades, but now I spared weeks to studying instead of preparing for exams, and I think about the future with a deeper sense of meaning. Success, just like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder(旁观者). For me, being successful means truly living life each day, being thankful, and affecting the world.

1The main idea of the first paragraph is ________.

A.the writer drew a beautiful picture for his future

B.the writer was an intelligent student at school

C.the writer was mad for success

D.the writer devoted himself to material success

2The underlined word “existing” probably means ________.

    A.living B.fighting C.exciting D.disappearing

3Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.People can truly enjoy daily life by trying to achieve material success.

B.Success can only be measured with a Porsche and a big house.

C.People should concentrate on today and success will follow afterwards.

D.The pursuit of inner peace, purpose and happiness is a real success.

4The fact that changed the writer’s attitude towards life was that _________.

    A.he couldn’t afford a Porsche and a big house

B.some of his loved persons passed away

C.he wanted to enjoy his life’s great changes

D.it was too difficult for him to get good grades

5The purpose of the writer is probably to ________.

A.advise us to have a correct attitude towards success

B.inspire us to lead an active life each day

C.remind us to set a goal for our life

D.advise us to work hard to achieve our success
