21、Huck is my name, Huckleberry Finn. I live in the town of St. Petersburg in the state of Missouri. It is a small town but it is near a very big river called Mississippi. This is a story of a journey that I made down the river on a raft and the adventures I had on the way.
It all started when my best friend, Tom Sawyer and I found $ 12,000 in a cave. That money made us rich. We got $ 6, 000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day interest (利息).
Then a kind old lady called Widow Douglas invited me to live with her. Because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, then my dad, Pap, went away. He was an unkind man especially when he drank a lot, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I was afraid of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods.
My life changed after I lived with the widow (寡妇). She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table.
But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.
“Don’t put your feet on the table. Huckleberry! Sit up straight! Why don’t you try and behave well, Huckleberry?”

A big sandstorm hit northern China on March 15, 2021. It covered many cities with thick clouds of yellow dust (尘土).
The storm, which came from Mongolia (蒙古国), was the largest sandstorm to hit China in the past 10 years. Many flights and classes were canceled because the visibility (能见度) was lower than 500 meters.
The storm was the result of warm and dry weather in the area, together with the strong winds from Mongolia. “There has been little rainfall so far this spring and the temperature is rising. So now is a worrying time for sandstorms,” said an expert from Beijing.
In recent years, sandstorms haven’t been as common in northern China as before. The land with desertification (荒漠化) has been falling by 7,585 km2 per year in China, and the area of sandy land has been decreasing by 1,284 km2 a year. This is thanks to China’s Three-North Shelter Forest Program (TNSFP, 三北防护林工程) which started in the 1970s. Millions of trees have been planted in northern China to prevent sandstorms and protect the environment.
Besides, China has a color-graded warming system for sandstorms (as shown in the picture), with red meaning the most serious, followed by orange, yellow, blue and green. Therefore, people would have time to get prepared for the sandstorm.

24、Parents often find children watch cartoons for at least three to four hours a day. Studies show that kids start watching cartoons on TV at an early age of six months, and by the time they reach the age of two or three, they become cartoon fans and they would like to spend much time on it. Parents often look upon this as a problem because most of the kids are found to become addicted to(沉迷于)watching cartoons. Parents think if kids spend too much time on cartoons, they will fall behind in study.
Some people think cartoons are worth watching. It helps the working parents the most because they can do a lot of work by getting their kids involved with(涉及)cartoon programs on TV.
When they watch educational cartoons, they get to learn many things. Kids learn many things by watching such cartoon programs. They also help to improve their language. 25、Nook’s arrival, Good or Bad?
Booklovers, most of them, will tell you what a pleasure it is to lend a favorite read to a friend—the novel you stayed up all night to get to the end of; the travel book that made you feel as if you yourself were on a train ride through India. For a while it seemed that e-book users were to be denied this pleasure of lending to friends. You could b【1】 a book or magazine for your reading device, but you couldn’t lend it out.
But now, with the Nook, the US book chain Barnes and Noble’s response to Amazon’s Kindle, electronic readers will be able to have their l【2】 literary enthusiasm pressed on their friends, just like readers of physical books can. You simply email the book from your Nook and your friend can read it for two weeks, using any device with the Barnes and Noble e-book reader software. It’s a big i【3】 from previous e-book readers.
The Nook offers other features too. You read in black and white on the main screen, just like with Kindle. The difference is that on the lower part of the device there’s a c【4】 touch screen, which allows you to browse through a book or magazine, but goes black when you’re not using it so that you s【5】 power.
Another exciting thing about the Nook is that it offers Wi-Fi, arguably a big advance on previous e-book readers. Customers in the United States can use the Internet connection to read whole e-books at Barnes and Noble’s hundreds of bookstores for free. None of Barnes and Noble’s c【6】 can come close to this.
But the Nook, ironically, has t【7】 out to be a money-loser for Barnes and Noble, or at least a job-loser for Barnes and Noble’s employees. According to Marian Maneker at The Big Money Website, if the Nook is successful it might take sales from the company’s bookstores, eventually forcing their closure and the loss of thousands of jobs.
