Hi, I’m Yu Bo. Last year, I stayed in the UK for about two months. I found children’s life in the UK is really different from Chinese children’s. They have more free time to 1 their interests. They can choose to do things they like. But it also means that children don’t have to 2 their parents too much. They can take good care of themselves at an early age. At home, children have to learn how to3 such as sweeping the floor and 4 clothes. And they have to help with housework every day. At school, they don’t have much 5. • 22、   Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color of most growing plants. Sometimes, the word “green” means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it means something that is not yet finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has little experience as he is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow whose horns() had not yet developed. A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had no experience in war. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today — a person who is new in a job.

About one hundred years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the west of America. People used it to describe a man if he came from one of the big cities in the east. The greenhorn didn’t have the skills to live in the hard country. Someone who is good at growing plants is said to have a green thumb(大拇指). This comes from the early 20th century. A person with a green thumb can make plants grow quickly and well. The Green Revolution is the name given to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains some years ago. It was the result of hard work by scientists who had green thumbs. Green is also the color used to describe the feeling — Jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster(怪兽) is not a dangerous animal from outer space. It is an expression used about 400 years ago by the British writer William Shakespeare in his play Othello. It means the unpleasant feeling when someone has something he wants to get. In most places in the world, the color green is one of the traffic lights. Green has so many different meanings that we should know more to understand it better.

1A new soldier was called a greenhorn in the _________ century.

    A.15th B.16th C.18th D.20th

    2A person with a green thumb _________.

A.is good at growing plants B.really has a green thumb

C.he reads a sad story D.his friend gets a gift that he wants

    4This passage mentions(提及) the following EXCEPT “_________”.

5Which would be the best title of the passage?

C.Green, One of Traffic Lights D.Green, with Different Meanings

  • 23、For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold dry climates of the ice age, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.

Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Nowadays, the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year; equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the U. K. each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.

On the one hand, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. On the other hand, to study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen (花粉) kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments (沉淀物), which requires specialized equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and planes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rives completely unsampled. So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.

    A.the U.S.A.

    B.the U.K.

    C.England

    D.Brazil

【4】Scientists research about how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past so that they may learn in advance about how the rainforests ________.

    A.draw down CO2

    B.still protect the soil

    C.will get smaller

    D.will manage in the future

【5】The way to go back to last ice age is to ________.
