  • 21、The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth. It can weigh up to 173,000 kg and grow as long as 30 meters. Adult female (雌性的) blue whales are larger than adult males. The blue whaled heart alone is the size of a small car!

The blue whale lives mostly in cold and temperate (温和的) waters. It prefers deeper ocean waters. Blue whales usually live alone or in pairs, although they may go in groups to find food. And paired adult blue whales are usually a male and a female. Often, the same two whales will be seen together for a long time. The large part of food for them is shrimps (小虾) and they can eat a lot of shrimps at a time. Blue whales have very deep voices. The sound a blue whale makes can travel thousands of miles in deep waters. So the whales may be able to communicate with each other across oceans.

However, blue whales face a serious problem. In 1931 alone, almost 30,000 blue whales were killed. By 1966 there had been so few blue whales that the international Whaling Commission (国际捕鲸委员会) called for the whale protection. In 2000 it was found that there were fewer than 10,000 left.

  • 22、Long long ago, there was a kind lady. Every day, she baked bread for her family and an extra loaf for any hungry passer-by. She placed the extra bread beside a window. When the woman placed the bread, she always gave a prayer for her son. Her son had gone to a faraway place and she hadn’t heard from his for a very long time.

Every day, a tramp came and took away the bread. He said when he was leaving, “The evil you do remains with you. The good you do comes back to you.”

The woman felt irritated. “Not even a word of thanks”, she said to herself with unhappiness.

This went on, day by day.

Finally, the woman became so angry that she decided to get rid of the tramp. She added poison to the bread she was going to offer to the tramp! When she was placing it, her hands shook. “Look at what I’ve done!” she immediately threw the bread into fire and made another one.

As usual, the tramp came and pick up the bread. “The evil you do remains with you. The good you do comes back to you,” he said again and left.

That evening, there was a knock on the door. Surprisingly, the women’s son was standing in the doorway. He was tired and weak. “Mum, it’s a miracle that I can come back home! While I was only a mile away, I was so hungry that I almost gave up. But just then an old tramp gave me a loaf of bread. He said that the bread was his food everyday. But today, I should get the bread, for I needed the bread much more than he did!”

  • 23、   Mary Jo Ray turned 113 in May, 2008. She was the twelfth oldest person in the world. Ray was one of the few people who lived to more than 110 years old. We often call them centenarians. “She often drinks milk. She hardly gets angry with others and is always happy. So she is in good health. I think her reason for long life is drinking milk every day and trying to be happy,” said her granddaughter(孙女).

Her doctor, Dr. Perls, said another reason for Ray’s long life is her genes (基因). She got them from her parents. He said, “These genes can keep you in good health and let you live longer. People can usually live to about 80 years old. Those with the right genes can live to more than 100 years. They also pass those genes to their children. So if a person’s parents live long, he or she will probably live long, too.” Dr. Perls also said, “You may not have those genes. But if you don’t smoke, don’t drink too much, and do exercise or do other things to make yourself relaxed and happy, you still can live long."

  • 24、If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they will become weak, when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory (记忆) works in the same way. When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance (机会) to become strong.

If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his own fault (过错). But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents may be blamed (责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault. Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but usually they have better memories? This is because they cannot read or write, they have to remember them. Since they cannot write them down in a small notebook, they have to remember days, names, songs and stories. Therefore, their memory is being exercised the whole time.

So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering things in a way as other people do.

    【1】Someone can't have a good memory if ________.

    A.he can't read or write

    B.he doesn't use his memory

    C.his parents don't have a good memory

D.he doesn't use his arms or legs for some time

【2】If you do not use your arms or legs for some time, ________.

A.you can't use them any more

    B.they will become stronger

C.they become weak but they slowly become strong again

D.they become weak and won't become strong until you use them again

【3】Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Your memory works in the different way as your arms or legs.

B.Your memory becomes weak if you do not give it enough chance for practice.

C.Don't learn how to read and write if you want to have a better memory.

D.A good memory comes from less practice.

【4】Few people know that it is only ________ if a friend has a poor memory.

    A.his own fault

    B.his parents' fault

    C.his teachers' fault

    D.his grandmother's fault

【5】The writer wants to tell us ________.

A.how to use our arms or legs

    B.how to read and write

C.how to have a good memory

D.how to learn from the people
