21、Dear Simon,
I am glad to know that you have joined your school reading club. I enjoy reading, too. I want to introduce to you my favorite novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (《查理和巧克力工厂》).
The novel tells the story of a boy named Charlie Bucket and his adventures (冒险经历) in Mr. Wonka's chocolate factory. The Bucket family is very poor. Charlie loves Wonka chocolate bars. But he only receives one chocolate bar a year on his birthday.
One day, Mr. Wonka decides to open up his factory to five lucky children. They can find golden tickets in their Wonka chocolate bars. On his birthday, Charlie's family all hope that his chocolate bar will contain a golden ticket. But sadly, it doesn't. Three days later, Charlie finds a coin on the ground. He buys some chocolate bars with it. To his great surprise, he finds a golden ticket!
Charlie goes to the factory with his grandfather. It is an amazing place. There is even a chocolate river! One by one, the other four children on the tour cause trouble. They are all taken away. Charlie is the only child who doesn't cause any trouble. Mr. Wonka tells him that he wins the contest.
Do you know what Charlie wins? You will find the answer in the novel. Do share your feelings about the story with me when you finish reading it. I'm looking forward to your reply. I hope you will like this novel.
With love,
Carl

23、 Monarch butterflies from eastern Canada make the most amazing journey in the insect world. Each year, this butterfly travels about 3, 000 miles to its winter home in central Mexico. How can it fly so far? And why does it make this long and dangerous trip? Scientists still don’t have an answer.
For many years, people in Mexico wondered where the orange and-black butterflies came from every winter. Then, in 1937, a scientist started to follow and study the butterflies. For the next 20 years, he discovered that one butterfly started its journey in Canada. Four months later, it arrived in Mexico.
The length of the butterflies’ trip is only one part of the mystery. Another amazing thing is that the butterflies always return to the same area in central Mexico.
How do the butterflies find their way back to the same place? This is an interesting question because only every fourth generation(代) makes the trip south. In other words, the butterfly that travels to Mexico this year is the great great-grandchild of the butterfly that traveled there last year.
Each year, four generations of a Monarch butterfly family are born. Each generation of the family has a very different life. The first generation is born in the south in late April. It slowly moves north, reproduces(繁衍), and then dies. Each of these generations of butterflies lives for only two or five weeks. In the autumn, the fourth generation of butterflies is born. This generation has a much longer life. It lives for about eight months. This generation of butterflies makes the amazing journey back to the winter there, and in the spring they reproduce and then die. Their offspring will be the first generation of the next circle of life.
Today, people are still studying the Monarch butterfly. But they are not clear about everything.

Getting enough exercise is also important at difficult times, such as the coronavirus pandemic(冠状病毒大流行). But in areas with stay-at-home orders, exercising outside may not be as simple as it sounds. French officials have banned(禁止) people from taking part in outdoor sports activities between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Michelle Quinn from the US wrote recently about the situation in the San Francisco Bay area. She wrote, “A lot of people went to the parks, playgrounds and beaches…the government had to shut them down. The areas were so crowded, and health officials worried people couldn′t—or wouldn′t—stay 6 feet apart.” Six feet is about two meters.
In some places, going outside for exercise and playing sports on a team were not allowed. So some people began to exercise online. Beth Berglin is from Florida. Before the pandemic, she would have camp-style classes four mornings a week. Later though she couldn′t go out, she stayed active through online exercise classes.
Some fitness companies are changing to meet the new environment. Fitness centers across the United States helped people stay active by offering online exercise classes. Some fitness centers had free classes, some had longer trial periods(试用期), some cut down the price of classes, some offered free products or service. Many of these online exercise classes were made for smaller spaces and did not need any special equipment. One online exercise company named Obe received requests(要求) for children′s classes from parents. So they designed four 10-minute dance and strength(力量) workouts(锻炼) for 10-year-olds and younger.
During the pandemic, getting exercise might be more difficult, but people tried to change their habits and find new ways to exercise in order to keep healthy.
