21、 Some people like to get up early, but some do not. In fact, it is really good for us to get up early every day. Maybe those who don’t like getting up early will not believe this, but it is true. Scientists made a survey(调查)in about one thousand people, and then they found that early rising people had less disease than late rising people, and early rising people also looked healthier than late rising people, and so on.
So we may know early rising is helpful in more than one way. Firstly, it helps to keep us healthy. We all need fresh air. And air is the freshest early in the morning. Besides, it is useful to do morning exercises.
Secondly, early rising helps us in our studies. In the morning we learn more quickly and find it easier to understand what we learn.

22、 When we see babies or pets, we can’t help touching them gently to show our love. And they give happy feelings back to us. But a recent study shows that it’s different for plants.
A study in The Plants Journal shows that plants don’t like to be touched. That’s because touching changes their genes (基因), and even worse, it can slow their growth. Professor Jim Whelan in Australia gave an explanation. The lightest touch from a human, an animal, or even plants touching each other in the wild, causes a big gene change in the plant.
In order to test the idea, the scientists did an experiment ( 实验) on plants. They grew a number of plants to the age of four weeks. Then they touched them with a brush every 12 hours over a 36-hour period. They found that as a result of the touch, the mitochondria ( 线粒体) in the plants were partly broken. The mitochondria are the “power-house” of the cells (细胞). The mitochondria produce energy for the cells in both animals and plants. If this “power-house” is broken, the plants will lose lots of energy. The energy is very important for their growth. Whelan further explained, “If the touching is repeated, then the plant growth is slowed by 30 percent.”
Although the touching does have a strong influence (影响) on plants, usually the plants can still be alive. _________________________ Continually touching or moving plants will make them grow shorter than other ones. However, in some ways, this change could be helpful. It may help plants to fight against threats from animals or bad weather.
The findings of the research ( 研究) help us to have a better understanding of the plants. And the research might help with the growth of plants.
