六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、This is a story about a boy named Sparky. For Sparky, school was all but impossible. He failed every subject in the eighth grade. He got a zero in physics. It made him the worst physics student in the school’s history. He didn’t do much better in sports. Although he tried to join the school’s golf team, he quickly lost the only important match.

He didn’t have friends, either. Other kids didn’t care about him. If a classmate said “hello” to Sparky outside school, he would feel very surprised.

Sparky was a loser(失败者)and everyone knew it. So he accepted it.

But one thing was important to Sparky—drawing. He was proud of his artwork. In senior high school, he sent some cartoons to the editors of the yearbook but got turned down. Sparky was hurt. But he didn’t lose hope because he believed in his ability. He decided to become a professional artist.

He wrote a letter to the Walt Disney Studios after graduating high school. The studio asked him to draw some cartoons on a certain subject. Sparky spent a lot of time on the cartoons. Finally, the reply came from Disney Studios: they didn’t like his cartoons.

  • 23、

Two friends ended their friendship because of an argument, even though neither one could remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in schools.

In fact, according to a report, violence(暴力) has become the greatest threat(威胁) to the lives of teenagers. Why not teach students to deal with conflicts(冲突) like the way to teach them to solve math problems?

First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school students shows that most violence between students begin with an insult (侮辱) which is not serious. For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to conflicts. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.

Since conflict is unavoidable, students can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution(解决): stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the emotional fire before it becomes out of control.

Listening could be the next step. It allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen carefully. After that, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to make the speaker's position easier to understand. Then the two people should change roles.

Finally, students need to consider what they are dealing with. This doesn't mean trying to work out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue(问题)is and what both sides are trying to achieve. For example, the shouting match over a peanut after sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is refusing to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn't, careful thought helps both sides work out a solution.

There will always be conflicts in schools, but that doesn't mean there needs to be violence. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, and parents. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools.

1Why do students need to ask themselves questions when they deal with conflicts?

A.To find out who is wrong. B.To work out how to stop shouting.

C.To get ready to try new things. D.To make clear what the real issue is.

2What can we learn from the passage?

A.Violence is more likely to happen at lunchtime.

B.Students should learn the way to deal with conflicts in schools.

C.Learning to solve conflicts can help students with their lessons.

D.Conflicts usually begin with a serious problem between students.

3Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Threat to the Lives of Teenagers B.Cause of Arguments in School

C.How to Understand Youth Violence D.How to Deal with School Conflicts

  • 24、We all know that exercise is good for your health. But some kinds of exercise may be better than others. Running, for example, may help to protect against heart disease and other health problems. Running may also help you live longer.

Recently, researchers studied more than 55,000 adults. About a quarter of the adults have a good habit of running. The study found these runners were much healthier than non-runners. In fact, the runners lived, on average, three years longer than the non-runners.

Running may be good exercise, but it can be difficult on the body. Here are commonly shared ideas among fitness experts to lower the risk of injury for people who are new to running.

    Take it easy.

Do not run too much, too soon or too fast. Most people get running injuries when they push themselves too hard. The body needs time to get used to increases in distance or speed.

    Get good running shoes.

There is no single best shoe for every runner. You should find the shoe that offers the best fit and support for your feet. More importantly, you should have a new pair of shoes every 500 to 800 kilometers.

    Take good notes.

Take time after each run to write down notes about what you did and how you felt. Look for things that happen again and again. For example, you may find that your knees hurt when you run sometimes. But perhaps you feel great when you have a rest between running days. These notes will help you make the best plan for running.

    【1】From Paragraph 1, we know ________.

    A.running is the best exercise

B.running is especially good for the heart

C.not all exercise is good for heath

D.running may cause some health problems

【2】According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is TRUE?

A.A good habit of running may help you live longer.

B.The number of runners was getting smaller and smaller.

C.41,250 of 55,000 adults have a habit of running.

D.Non-runners are usually too busy to do exercise.

【3】Fitness experts think that new runners should ________.

A.do as much running as possible

    B.choose proper running shoes

C.start running as soon as possible

    D.run 500 to 800 kilometers a year

【4】According to the article, you can ________ by taking notes.

    A.improve your own writing skills

B.do some useful research on exercise

    C.learn more words about running

D.find the way of running that fits you

【5】This article is mainly about ________.

    A.a recent research on running

B.the dangers of running too fast

    C.the experts’ advice on running

D.the risk of running without rest
