六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Steven Contursi is an American. He has a hobby of collecting coins. He became well known because he owned a very special coin. It is thought as the nation's oldest silver dollar. In 1794, America began producing silver dollars. On the front of the coin was a drawing of Lady Liberty with long, straight hair; on the back was a drawing of the famous American eagle. About 1,750 such silver dollars were produced that year. But now, only about 150 are known to exist in the world. Luckily, Steven collected one. Even 216 years later, it still looks very fine. So many coin collectors have great interest in it.

In May, 2010, Steven sold the coin to an educational organization that collects rare coins and educates the public about them. Can you imagine how much he sold the onedollar coin for? $7.85 million! The organization has a plan to put the coin on show. With the help of the little coin, the public will understand more about the early history of America.

Steven bought the coin in 2003 and wasn't planning on selling it until the organization gave him an offer he couldn't refuse.

  • 22、Tara: Nicole, I have a problem.

    Nicole: What kind of problem?

Tara: I have a job interview tomorrow, and I heard that the boss will ask to see my Facebook profile. I’m not comfortable with that.

Nicole: That’s illegal in some countries, like Canada. Can you refuse?

Tara: I want to, but I’m afraid that if I do, I won’t get the job!

Nicole: I guess I see the boss’s point. Looking at a candidate’s Facebook page will tell him a lot about the person’s life and personality.

Tara: That’s true. Most of my life is on Facebook. My profile could tell him about my hobbies, my interests and what my friends think of me. I find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information disturbing.

Nicole: Companies run background checks on possible employees all the time. And this is just another way for him to see if you’re trustworthy. Besides, I’ve seen your Facebook page, and you don’t have anything to hide.

Tara: Maybe not, but my friends might still post things on my Facebook page that make me look bad.

Nicole: I think the boss will probably realize the differences between your posts and your friends’ posts.

Tara: He might, but I’m also worried that something the boss sees on Facebook could be misleading. For example, I wore a really crazy costume to my friend’s party last week. I wouldn’t want him to think I always do strange things like that.

Nicole: Yeah, but I don’t think the boss would assume that one picture shows how you always act. I’m sure he’ll be pretty cautious about drawing conclusions too quickly based on Facebook.

【1】How does Tara find the idea of showing a boss that much personal information?

    A.She thinks it great trouble.

B.She has decided to refuse it.

C.She is quite pleased with it.

D.She has no idea of it.

【2】What does Nicole want to express by saying “I guess I get the boss’s point”?

A.Nicole wants to help Tara get more reasons why the boss did so.

B.Nicole has just understood the boss’s real purpose.

C.Nicole would like to be a friend indeed.

D.Nicole will check Tara’s personal information for the boss.

【3】How can we understand the word “candidate’s”?

A.a person that has won something

B.a person who has long experience

C.a person with a record of failing

D.a person who is running for a position

  • 23、   My father woke me up early one summer morning when I was fourteen and said: Get up, you’re going with me to cut the grass in the garden.

The idea that my father thought I was old enough to help him in his business (生意) made me feel proud (骄傲) and excited. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I worked in the large garden, in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was too tired to say a word but I felt good. This was my first time to help my father in his business. I got $ 6 for my work that day.

One day my father found some leaves I had missed and pulled me aside. Take away these leaves! he said seriously, and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again. The message was clear. Today I still value(珍视) it , which my father gave to me that day. It will always be helpful to impress (给……留下印象) the person you are working for.

After two years, I left home and went to another town to start my new life. Luckily for me, I quickly found a job to wash dishes in a restaurant. Every morning, I set off early, always with the same strong wish I got long long ago. I felt like I was old enough to be independent and make a living by myself.

In fact, washing dishes was not exciting, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job was a good job and whatever I got from the job was more than I had before. I could learn something meaningful from every job and do it better and better. One day, a newspaper reporter once asked me how someone could possibly live with hard work and low pay. If you only think about hard work and money, answered.

  • 24、   Many parents set rules for their children’s online activity, such as limiting ( 限 制 ) the amount of time they can spend online.   They complain that their parents share too many photos of them online.

In a 2016 study, it was found that parents in the US share an average (平均) of 116 photos of their kids after they were born. Most were taken before the child turned 8 years old. Many of the photos showed kids in embarrassing ( 尴 尬 的 ) situations like having food all over their faces. Quartz reported.

Parents do like to share their child’s progress as he or she grows up. But their kid doesn’t like it as much. In a survey of UK children between the ages of 12 and 16, 70 percent said they felt their parents didn’t respect (尊重) their online privacy (隐私) according to Digital Parenting Magazine.

In addition, many kids said that other students at school sometimes pick on them after their parents post photos online, CBS News noted. In one case, a girl was bullied (欺负) by boys at school after they found her mom’s blog. There were many family photos in the blog.

“Each time a photo or video is uploaded, it creates a digital footprint of a child, which can follow them into adult life,” a spokeswoman for a leading children’s charity in the UK said. “It’s always important to ask children for their permission before posting or videos of them.”

C.But some children in the US and UK are saying they’d like to make rules for parents too.

2The second paragraph shows us   .

B.a study from the US and UK

    C.embarrassing situations of kids

3Kids don’t like their parents to share their photos because they think   .

A.their photos are not beautiful enough

    B.parents should respect their privacy

C.hey may be bullied at home or school

4The underlined phrase “pick on” may mean   .

    A.捉弄 B.捡起 C.发现

5From the passage, we can know that the writer   .

A.encourages more parents to share their children’s photos online

B.shows it is important for parents to ask children if they can post their photos

C.hopes that parents will not post photos or videos of their children
