六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you. Well, ni-hao. (Laughter) It is such a pleasure and an honor to be here with all of you at this great university, so thank you so much for having me. I’m here today because I know that our future depends on connections like these among young people like you across the world.

That’s why when my husband and I travel abroad, we don’t just visit palaces and parliaments(国会) and meet with heads of countries. We also come to schools like this one to meet with students like you, because we believe that relationships between countries aren’t just about relationships between governments or leaders — they’re about relationships between people, particularly young people. So we view study abroad programs not just as an educational chance for students, but also as an active part of America’s foreign policy(政策).

Through the wonders of modern technology, our world is more connected than ever before. Ideas can cross oceans with the click of a mouse. Companies can do business andcompetewith companies across the world. And we can text, email, skype with people in the world.

So studying abroad isn’t just a fun way to spend a time of learning; it is quickly becoming the key to success in our times. Because getting ahead in today’s workplaces isn’t just about getting good grades or test scores in school, which are important. It’s also about having real experience with the world beyond your borders — experience with languages, cultures and societies very different from your own. Or, as the Chinese saying goes: “It is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.”

    A. In a university.   B. In the Parliament Hall.

    A. getting good grades

    B. traveling abroad

    C. connections among young people

    D. texts and emails

3What is the meaning of the underlined word “compete” in Paragraph 3?

    A. 完成   B. 比较   C. 竞争   D. 抱怨

4In the speaker’s opinion, what is the key to success in our times?

    A. Going to a university.

    B. Doing more exercises.

    C. Studying abroad.

    D. Getting good test scores.

5Where may the passage come from?

    A. A story.   B. A news report.

    C. A scientific magazine.   D. A speech.

  • 22、If a friend helps you, what do you do in return? You could just say “Thank you”. Or you could write a thank-you note. But most people don’t do this.

“People don’t seem to give thanks to people quite often,” Amit Kumar from University of Texas says.

Why are people hesitant (犹豫的) about sending thank-you notes? And how do most people react when they receive one?

Kumar and his team asked some students to each write a letter of thanks to another person. Then, they questioned both the writer and the recipient (接受者) about the letter and how it made them feel.

They found that people don’t like to write thank-you notes because they feel like they have to think too much about it. They worry about what to say and how to say it.

But people really like receiving thank-you notes. They feel especially happy.

“If people knew that writing a thank-you note can have such a big influence on the recipient, they would do it more often,” Kumar says.

Kumar says this study makes us think that simple, small changes in our everyday lives can make a big difference in how we treat other people and how we feel.

    根据短文内容,判断下列句子正(A)误(B)。

【1】Most people like to write a thank-you note when a friend gives them a favor.

【2】Many students know what to say because they want to think too much.

【3】People would like to get thank-you notes from others.

【4】The writer thinks writing a thank-note can have a big influence.

【5】The study can help us make a big difference in how to treat others.

  • 23、Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks were taking many of their chickens. The farmers didn’t know what to do.Finally they went to the country officials and asked for help.

“Kill the hawks,”the officials said.“We will even pay for them.”So the farmers began to think of ways to kill the hawks.

The farmers killed many hawks. They no longer had to worry about their chickens. But they now had a new worry.Field mice were eating up a lot of the farmers’grain.

      How did this happen?

Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But the farmers didn’t know this. When they killed a lot of hawks, they changed the balance.

When people move into a new place, they often destroy many wild plants.Often these plants are food for the animals. If the animals can’t find enough plants to eat, they will starve or have to leave the place.

In one part of the USA,for example, the deer there like to eat a certain kind of wild roses. The mountain lions there eat the deer. The number of deer, mountain lions and wild roses doesn’t change much if people leave things as they are.

But people killed many mountain lions in order to protect the deer.Soon there were so many deer that they ate up all the wild roses. Then the deer began to eat the green leaves of young trees. These trees were important to the farmers. So the farmers thought of ways to protect their trees. Now the deer had nothing to eat,and many of them died. This was another lesson from nature.

To keep the balance of nature is important for us to rememher.

    根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)。

2Field mice eat not only chickens but also the farmers’grain.( )
