21、“Homestay” is a form of study abroad program. It allows the visitor to rent a room from a local (当地的) family to better understand the local lifestyle. It also helps to improve the visitor’s language ability, ” said a teacher during a school meeting last term. “Students who wish to learn more about foreign cultures or to get foreign experience should join this kind of holiday. I am sure you won’t be disappointed (失望的). ”
After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, I had a chance at last to go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to London, a place where I had wanted to go since years ago.
As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked after us. After we got to London, we went to stay with different families. I was lucky that my host family (寄宿家庭) was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.
The holiday was filled with activities every day. After breakfast, a local teacher would come to take us in his car. Then we would have classes or go on a sight-seeing trip to different places of interest like the Big Ben, the London Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace. We would go back to our own homes after the activities.
The holiday was a valuable experience for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yet, time really flew fast. Three weeks later, we had to leave “home” for Hong Kong.

It’s not true that only women wear skirts. Men can wear them, too.
In Scotland, men wear a kind of skirt called kilt. The kilt is their national dress and an important part of their tradition.
A kilt is a colored skirt reaching down to the knees. It has checks(方格)on it with different colors, like red and blue. Each family in Scotland has its own colors.
How did the Scots start to wear kilts? There are many stories about it. One story is that the kilt was invented in the 1720s by an English factory owner, Thomas Rawlinson.
Rawlinson had a number of Scottish workers in his factory and he thought their clothing got in the way of their work. So he cut their long clothes into shorter skirts.
Today, most Scotsmen look the kilt as a formal dress. They usually only wear them at weddings or big dinners. There are only a few men who still wear a kilt every day.
Scots also wear kilts in parades(游行队伍)when they play their traditional musical instrument bagpipes. The army still has kilts as the dress uniform, but they no longer use them when fighting.

23、When Jane and Billy were little, they got along well. The fights didn’t start until they were both 10 years old.
“Mom, Billy won’t give my book back!”
“It’s not yours. It’s mine!”
And so it went. Our peaceful house had turned into a war zone (战区). But we found a solution.
We talked to the kids and discussed what would happen if they argued again. We came up with a list of “punishments (惩罚)” that we would give them if they fought. But they weren’t really punishments — just nice things that we would ask them to do for each other. For example, if Jane started a fight, we would ask her to clean Billy’s room. If Billy started a fight, we would ask him to give Jane a hug.
We wrote these “punishments” on a circular board (圆形板子) with an arrow in the middle. If one of them started a fight, he/she would have to spin (转动) the board and receive the “punishment”.
This “punishment wheel” worked wonders (取得惊人成效). Soon the kids stopped arguing so often. We didn’t have to really punish them — we just had to teach them to be nice to each other.

But the boy still wouldn’t take any. The shopkeeper reached into the jar himself, took out two big handfuls of candy and gave them to the boy.
As the boy and his mother went on their way home, his mother asked, “Why didn’t you take the candy when the shopkeeper handed you his jar?”
The boy answered, “Because my hands are too small. If the shopkeeper takes out the candy himself, I can get more candy!”
