  • 22、My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around our neighbourhood. Two dog walkers passed by and one of them said, “Never seen that dog around here before.”

We looked down the hill and saw an old black dog stumbling (蹒跚) painfully up the hill. We bent down, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar. There was a phone number on it, but no one answered.

The dog was really thin. It didn’t have many teeth left.

Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog to come along with me. Julie got home and back again when I was only half way there. So, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend ate its food.

Finally we got it home. We gave it a blanket, more food and wondered what to do next.

After trying for many times, we got a reply from the number. A lady came. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. It was very old and should probably be put to sleep, but the lady just couldn’t bring herself to do it. So, Tara was safely returned home.

Here is the truth of the story:

In fact, Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I still didn’t find it possible. I was going to turn and go when an old, weak dog walked between us and collapsed. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.

We did help it. And here am I writing the story in my own home. In the song “Love Is Not a Fight”, Warren Barfield talks about marriage. He sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door.”

  • 23、MONEY-SAVING TIPS FOR DISNEY WORLD

Every time you visit Disney World, there’s something new to see. The Magic Kingdom (王国) now includes the high-tech, movie-made Disney and Animal Kingdom. The park is becoming bigger, and you may need to spend more money, too. How can you save? I’ve been to the park more than 25 times with my kids, and I’ve found a few money-saving tips for you.

Eat out at Lunchtime: The prices at some of the nicer restaurants are much lower at noontime than at any other time. It’s clever to make reservations (预定) before you leave home. Call 407-W-DISNEY.

Become a Gold Card Member: With $65, you can get a Magic Kingdom Club Gold Card (call 1-800-56-DISNEY). Cardholders get up to 20% off Disney hotel rooms, theme park tickets and things from Disney stores.

Don’t Pay Extra (额外) to See a Character: Character-theme dinner shows are expensive, costing a family of four about $140, and even a character breakfast can set you back $50. Try to meet the characters inside the theme parks and at free in-park shows.

Wait until the End of Your Trip to Buy Souvenirs: At that time, the kids will really know what they want, and you won’t waste money on expensive things.

    1What is Animal Kingdom?

    A. A part of the Magic Kingdom.   B. The Disneyland.

    C. A place for eating.   D. A kingdom with a Disneyland.

2If a Disney hotel room costs $400 a night, then a Gold Card Member needs to pay at least for a night.

It is believed that Huck Finn is based on a childhood friend of Mark Twain's. In fact, Twain was not alone in basing a fictional character on a reallife person.

    Severus Snape/John Nettleship

Severus Snape is a skillful teacher teaching magic in Harry Potter. The writer, JK. Rowling, once said that the character was based on a teacher of hers.

The teacher turned out to be John Nettleship, who taught Rowling chemistry. At first, Nettleship felt surprised. “I know I am a strict teacher” he said. “But I don't think I am as bad as Snape” On second thoughts, however, he said that he was so illtempered that most of his students avoided making him mad. Also, he used to wear long hair and have an untidy lab. That sounds familiar to Harry Potter fans.

Carroll began to create his famous tale of Alice and what happened after she fell through the rabbit hole. The little girl liked the story so much that she asked him to write it down. And the rest is history.
