22、Musical Notes
An orchestra(管弦乐队) would face difficulty in making music together if each player did not know how long to hold each note(音符). Each instrument would start its own beat(拍子) or melody(旋律), and nothing would come together properly. This is why it is so important for a musician to know what each note looks like and how long it is supposed to be held.
Below is a chart of the most common types of musical notes. The chart tells how many beats per measure(每小节) each note should be held. The length of a measure determined(确定) by the time signature at the beginning of a piece of music.
Whole note | 4 beats per measure
Half note | 2 beats per measure
Quarter note | 1 beat per measure
Eight note | 1/2 beat per measure
Sixteenth note | 1/4 beat per measure |
【1】Which notes lasts for 1/2 beat per measure?

23、 Everyone likes gifts. Some little kids think they don’t get enough gifts. Some old people think they get too many gifts. Different people like different kinds of gifts. Some presents are never too small. A little child may give his mother a leaf from a tree. It is enough to make her very happy.
Gift giving is different in different countries. In Japan, when people receive a special gift, they do not open it. Later, the same gift may be given away to someone else. Many people have enough things and don’t want too many gifts themselves. In Canada, many people will not give big gifts to someone else. They will pay for a park bench or a tree to help remember a person. In the USA, some people ask their families and friends to give money to charity rather than buy them gifts. In Sweden, doing something for someone is the best gift. People don’t need to spend too much money. Instead, making a meal is enough.

One day an old woman came into the shop. She was very rich and she came to the shop every week. She came to Sue’s chair and sat down.
“Good morning,” Sue said to her. “Do you want me to cut your hair today?”
“No,” the old woman said. “I don’t want you to cut it. I want you to dye it. My hair is white and I don’t like white. I want another color. Old people have white hair. I don’t want to be old.”
“Which colors do you want?”
“Which colors can I have?” the old woman asked.
“You can have black,” Sue said, “or brown. Some women are having red this year. You can even have blue.”
“Oh no,” the old woman said. “I don’t want blue. I’ll have black.” And then she sat back in the chair, close her eyes and went to sleep.
Sue washed the old woman’s hair, then she went to get the bottle of black dye. Just then the telephone rang. It was Tom. Sue’s boy friend.
“Can you have dinner with me tonight?” he asked her.
“I’d love to.” she said.
“Good, I’ll meet you when you finish work,” he said. “Bye.”
Sue put down the telephone. She was very happy. “What dress shall I put on?” she thought.
She took a bottle from the table and walked back to the old woman. “I’ll ask one of the girls here to cut my hair for me this afternoon.” she thought. She opened the bottle. “I want to be pretty for Tom,” she thought as she put the dye on the old woman’s hair.
She thought about Tom for a long time as she worked. She didn’t think about the old woman’s hair. She didn’t even look at it.
Then she stopped thinking about Tom and looked at the old woman’s hair. The hair was not black. It was pink.
Oh no! Sue cried. She looked at the bottle of dye. It was not the right bottle. “I must wash her hair again,” she thought. Then she remembered the dye would not come out in water. The old woman must wait until new hair grows. Oh, what shall I do? She’ll be very angry. Sue began to cry.
