二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The palm - forward (掌心向外) "V" sign, formed by raising and spreading the wrist two fingers, has three different meanings in American culture.

The most popular meaning of the "V" sign was invented in 1941 by a Belgian, Victor De Lavalaye. Wanting a symbol for resistance to the Nazi occupation, he came up with the single letter "V", which stood not only for his own first name, but also for English victory, Flemish virijheid, and French victoire.  The symbolism of the sign spread very quickly, and Winston Churchill used it constantly in public appearance.  Thus throughout the 1940s and 1950s, the gesture meant simply" victory " .

The second meaning came in the 1960s.  Because of its military implication, American antiwar protestors used the sign sarcastically (讽刺地) against the arms, so that it became known as the "peace sign". In the 1970s, the "W' sign, which had lost its military implication, was a common greeting among freedom lovers , acid heads, political radicals, and ultimately, young people in general. So by about the middle of the 1970s, it no longer gave clue to the user's philosophy.

The third meaning is the oldest and least common. American children jokingly put " V" ,  which resembles "horns", behind friends-heads in group snapshot. They are unknowingly reproducing something that southern Europeans would find highly offensive. This mischief, called "horns of the Devil", is a variant of the European "horns" gesture, which is obscene (猥亵的). Here the "w' sign means "Your wife has been cheating on you or, when placed behind another's head, his wife has been cheating on him. "

In the United States, the gesture is typically given with the palm facing the viewer. The British use both this version and an older, palm - backward version ; the latter is obscene in American culture, and corresponds to the American "finger". Churchill got some surprised stares in 1941 when, evidently unaware of the mean usage, he gave the palm - backward "V" to British troops. In England today you could have to be a social hermit not to understand the distinction. Astonishingly, however, Margaret Thatcher repeated Churchill's error after her victory in the 1979 election.

1What's the most popular meaning of the "V" sign?

    A. Victory, B. Peace.

    C. Cheat. D. Freedom.

2Why did Churchill get some surprised stares according to the last paragraph?

    A. He was proud of his troops.

    B. He had wanted to be a hermit.

    C. He wasn't insensible of the mean usage of the "V" sign.

    D. He wanted to show congratulations to British troops.

3What can be learned from the text?

    A. The "V" sign simply means victory since 1941.

    B. The "V" sign meaning peace was invented by a Belgian.

    C. Thatcher made the same error as Churchill after her successful election.

    D. American antiwar protestors used the sign to greet among freedom lovers.

4What can we conclude from the passage?

    A. It's never too old to learn.

    B. Think well before you speak.

    C. Actions speak louder than words.

    D. Try to know culture diversity fully and regionally.

  • 23、Four months into my second faculty job, I was shocked that I had to record the hours I’d worked. At first, I was annoyed that I had to waste my time on such a boring task. But the practice of writing down my work hours is surprisingly inspiring, sending me down a path to better work-life balance.

In my study, I always believed I could perform better with extra effort. My research never felt finished, and I had no idea how many hours I was supposed to work. That made it easy to go down rabbit holes and work more hours than necessary. When I started my first faculty position, my contract stated that I work anywhere from 36 to 48 hours per week. But my teaching and administrative workloads were so high that I regularly reached the 48-hour mark. There was a long time during my first faculty job when my children didn’t see me enough.

In my second faculty position, I expected that my work hours would again be my business. So when I was told to track them, I was surprised. But anyway I decided to keep careful track of my hours, even noting breaks.

I’m glad I did, because the data have completely changed my view of work-life balance. With my tracking, I’ve found that I generally accumulate one week of overtime every two to three months. So now, every time I reach that milestone, I take a few days or even a whole week off. I spend that time at home with my family, or use the days to take a longer vacation. The breaks have improved my happiness and job satisfaction.

The data also help ease any guilt that I may have otherwise felt if taking time off. I still have deadlines, position requirements, and the pressure to publish papers. And I still work a lot, sometimes even on weekends. But I now know how much I work-and that I deserve the time off.

【1】How did the author first react to recording working time?

    A.She disliked it.

    B.She followed it readily.

    C.She thought it rewarding.

    D.She wanted to improve it.

【2】What can be known about the author’s first faculty job?

    A.It increased her confidence.

    B.Its working hours were fixed.

C.It occupied her too much time.

D.It changed her view on teaching.

【3】What benefit does the author get from the tracking?

    A.A promotion.

    B.More personal time.

    C.No extra work on weekends.

    D.Greater academic success.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Rabbit holes

    B.Work-life balance

    C.Clocking your work

    D.Taking time off work

  • 24、Now, people may feel it surprising that given rise to by technological advances, one growing nuisance(讨厌的东西),is the “junk” telephone call. Actually, without further human assistance, those calls are distributed by machines which can be programmed to dial numbers automatically. Once a number is reached, the machine delivers a prepared sales voice or even records the receiver’s response.

The machine, which can call hundreds of numbers during a regular business day, does present some problems. Certain of the devices, particularly the cheaper ones, do not disconnect if the person called chooses not to listen and hangs up.

This has the potential to cause tragedy, as well as anger and inconvenience. Woman in the Midwest, for example, attempted to call a doctor for her mother, who had just collapsed with what appeared to be a heart attack. The phone did not present a dial tone but a recorded sales voice, which would not stop even after the woman hung up the phone. Fortunately, a neighbor’s phone was usable, and help was in place in time.

Certain models of the dialing devices can record orders for the product being sold. This has resulted in some bizarre situations. A family in Texas, for example, found that a $10,000 worth medicine was ordered by their healthy 75-year granny. Another family discovered that their three-year-old child, who didn’t know how to read, had subscribed to several adult magazines for which the parents were then being billed.

Many people regard the junk telephone call to be even more offensive than junk mail which is usually possible to recognize and discard without opening or reading it. A phone call, however, can’t be recognized as junk until it has been answered and at least a portion of the message heard. Some people have turned to the continuous use of answering machines on their home telephones while others find the answering machines equally objectionable as the junk calls. In reference to all the facts, some kind of regulation of the nuisance should be in place.

【1】Who may apply a“junk”telephone machine to call according to the first paragraph?

    A.Producers of “junk”telephone machines.

    B.Telephone companies greedy for money.

C.Evil-hearted people doing that just for fun.

D.Businesses promoting their items or services.

【2】What does the author want to present by giving the example of a woman in the Midwest?

A.Nice neighbors are treasures in one’s life.

B.Junk telephone machines are likely to do harm.

C.Telephones may break down at some critical moment.

D.Loads of phones are disturbed by junk telephone calls.

【3】What does the underlined word bizarre in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Unusual

    B.Accidental

    C.Amusing

    D.Mysterious

【4】What is the author’s intention of writing this passage according to the last paragraph?

A.Appealing for the regulation of the junk phone call.

B.Discussing the potential risks of technological advance.

C.Showing how people feel annoyed at the junk telephone call.

D.Displaying the troubles resulting from the junk telephone call.
