21、Imagine being a famous writer or a poet. What would life be like? Sitting at desk all day long writing down inspiring words? Racking one’s brain for hours until inspiration comes? Actually , such a portrayal is very much mistaken. The truth is most writers need a day job to earn their living, and even after rising to fame, some of them still keep their day jobs for various reasons.
As writing was not profitable in itself, many authors needed a day job for financial support. The famous British writer Virginia Woof ran a publishing house apart from writing. She founded it together with her husband and it was they who first discovered and published T.S. Eliot’s well-known poem The Waste Land. T.S. Eliot himself worked as a bank clerk for nearly a decade, during which time he completed and published The West Land. Then he also chose publishing as a day job and joined a publishing company called Faber&Faber.
Some writers remained passionate about their day jobs and were reluctant to leave them even they became famous. Lewis Carroll, the writer of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, was actually a mathematician. He wrote a lot of books on mathematics under his real name, Charles Dodgson. The day job that took up nearly half of his lifetime was being a teacher at Christ Church, the largest college of the University of Oxford. He taught there for 26 years until his death.
To some writers , a day job was also a good source of writing material. Herman Melville , now one of the most recognized writers in Americas, had to take up any job that paid the bills. He used to work as a surveyor, a shipman, a teacher, a lecturer and a customs inspector. His most significant working experience was being a shipman on a whaler(捕鲸船) in the Pacific, from which he drew inspiration for Moby Dick(《白鲸记》).

23、 As a composer, Andrew Pekler aims to make music that uses synthetic(合成的)sounds to build real-seeming places. With electronic instruments, he creates the sound of wind, waves, bird calls, and insects. "The sweet spot for me is when a piece I have made can be heard both as a field recording and as a completely composed, synthetic construct,'* he says.
In his new work, an online app called Phantom Islands, he tries out that idea to create a tour of islands that mapmakers once believed were real, but do not actually exist. Working with the web designer and developer Flavio Gortana, Pekler drew a map of imagined islands and filled each one with a fictional auditory(听觉 的)atmosphere.
When European ships were traveling the world, during the Age of Exploration, the men on board would come back with tales of the islands they'd come across, previously, unknown, to their societies. Usually these reports would be accurate enough, but sometimes this system went awry. Ship captains would conjure up(虚构 出 )imaginary islands to please their funders and sailors would report seeing land that never existed. Over time, these reports would be corrected, although sometimes it would take centuries. Reports of phantom islands are still being exposed in this century. They're strange relics of a human attempt to better understand the world, with all the weaknesses that came along with that project. That's part of what fascinates Pekler. "These nonexistent places are connected with real stories of human bravery, devotion, cruelty, selfishness, and confidence,” he says.
Allow the map to take you on a tour, during which you will be accompanied by extraordinary sounds. Or you can explore on your own, hopping from one island to another, imagining places that never existed.

25、 Hard work is often the only competitive advantage many people possess. We may not be as experienced or as _________ as other people.
But we can always work harder, smarter and longer.
As Kara Lawson-the Duke women's basketball team head coach-says, generally speaking, there's a huge _________ between working hard and competing.
Plenty of people work hard. But what is the best praise you can receive or give?
You competed.
_________ Lawson, most people mistake hard work for competitiveness:
“Hard work is I give you a task. I give you limitations on some task. I say, ‘You have to do this, in this amount of time, with this much weight.’ And then I force you to do it. I can force you to work hard just by what I ask you to do. You can't force someone to _________.”
The difference might seem amazing. Hard work requires effort and so does competing.
But working hard doesn't automatically mean _________ improvement. I can put in countless hours of effort without ever trying to “win.”
As Lawson says to her players:
“At the end of every session, that's the question you're asking yourself: Did I compete today?
That's different than working hard. Working hard is something some people do. Many people work hard in whatever job they do. Before you start, and then when you're done, be _________ with yourself: ‘Did I compete today?”
When you think you're _________, when you think you've done all you can, remember: You always find a little more inside you. You are capable of more than you think. Dig deep. Work a little harder.
When you're on the downside(劣势)of _________ and reaching a goal feels impossible, don't just work hard.
Compete: Make the extra phone call. Do the extra preparation. And remember to offer to not just tell _________ what to do but show them and then work beside them.
Every day, compete: to be the best boss you can be, the most empathetic(同理心的) listener you can be... Whatever it is, compete.
Competing will make you an even __________ “you” than you are today.
And that's the only competition that really matters.
