二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、The arts are an expression or application of human creativity and imagination. They help with young people’s development. Therefore, it’s important that all young people be exposed to the arts. They allow them to realize their potential through different forms of the arts at a young age and encourage self-expression and creativity.

Often, youths don’t realize their potential due to the lack of exposure. If they aren’t exposed to the arts, they wouldn’t even know they may have the talent or potential. If it’s discovered at an early age, they can gradually use their potential through higher education in the arts. Some might even choose to pursue it as a hobby or an occupation in the long run. I started learning to play the piano at five and now, at 15, I have realized my interest and passion in piano which would have been unknown without exposure to it.

Besides, youths can express themselves through exposure to the arts. Facing stress from school or their personal lives, they can find a new channel through artistic expressions such as dance or painting. Some who find it hard to express themselves might choose to bottle it up, leading to many psychological problems such as depression.

The arts also boost creativity. They let youths enhance their problem-solving skills by thinking out of the box. Researchers have found people tend to do something creative after engaging in the arts.

However, some critics may argue the arts will distract youths from studies. This has proven incorrect. A study in 2010 found that greater exposure to the arts led to higher graduation rates and test scores.

In conclusion, the exposure of the arts to youths is important as it helps them recognize their capability in the arts and express their feelings and imagination. We can do so by being exposed to the arts and being more willing to learn something new. This gives us endless opportunities to acquire new skills and become a better version of ourselves.

【1】What can we learn from paragraph 1?

A.Youths can’t get access to the arts without imagination.

B.Young people get exposed to music to become creative.

C.The exposure to the arts makes for youths’ development.

D.Human creativity is the consequence of learning the arts.

【2】The author mentions his experience of learning to play the piano to ________ .

A.show his talent and potential in the arts

B.indicate the choice he made was correct

C.prove the benefits of early exposure to the arts

D.encourage readers to learn musical instruments early

【3】What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A.Refusing to admit one’s own shortcomings.

B.Drinking up a bottle of wine to erase anxiety.

C.Locking oneself up in a room for a long time.

D.Avoiding sharing one’s emotions with anyone.

【4】What does the last paragraph mainly say about youths’ exposure to the arts?

    A.Its appeal to the young.

    B.Its significance for youths.

    C.Chances of learning the arts.

    D.Wide recognition of its function.

  • 22、Horror seized the heart of the World War I soldier as he saw his life-long friend fall in the battle. Caught in a trench(战壕)with continuous gunfire whizzing over his head, the soldier asked his commander if he might go out into the “No Man’s Land” between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back.

“You can go,” said the commander, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your own life away.” The commander’s words didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway.

To one’s surprise, he managed to reach his friend, raised him onto his shoulder, and brought him back to their company’s trench. As the two of them fell in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at his friend. “I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead, and your wound is deadly.” “It was worth it, though, sir.” the soldier said. “How do you mean ‘worth it’?” responded the commander. “Your friend is dead!” “Yes sir.” the soldier answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘Jim, I knew you’d come.’”

Many a time in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it. Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not regret not doing it later in life.

【1】What’s the commander’s attitude towards the soldier’s saving his friend?

    A. Positive. B. Negative.

    C. Neutral.    D. Supportive.

2The phrase “No Man’s Land” most probably means   in the passage.

    A. the area where there is no man

    B. a bare wasteland which can’t be used

    C. an unoccupied area between opposing armies

    D. the area on the court between the base line and the service line

3According to the soldier, why did he say “It was worth it.”?

    A. Because the soldier saved his friend in time.

    B. Because the soldier successfully brought his friend back.

    C. Because what he did will bring him great honor and make him get promoted in his later life.

    D. Because his friend was still alive when he reached him and he didn’t make his friend disappointed.

  • 23、   The Japanese government, citizens and groups are debating what to do with radioactive water from the disabled nuclear power plant near Fukushinma. An earthquake on March 11,2011 caused severe damage to three of the six nuclear reactors at the Fukushinma Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Since then, Japanese officials have been trying to contain and clear up the damage.

The Associated Press recently observed the decontamination (净化) process taking place there. Officials are trying to decide what to do with 1.2 million tons of radioactive water being stored at Fukushinma. The nuclear center is operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Co. , or TEPCO. The company says it needs to free up space as work on the damaged reactors reaches an important point. Many people expect TEPCO to slowly release the water into the ocean near the nuclear center. The government has already approved the plan.

However, it is not clear when the company will carry out the plan. Local people oppose itbecause that could hurt the fishing industry. Sales of fish caught off the coast near Fukushinma are half what they were before the nuclear disaster. Fish caught in the area have been approved for sale after radioactivity testing by health officials.

TEPCO Chief Decommissioning Officer Akira Ono said the water must be removed. He says crews need the space currently occupied by the water tanks. In their place, workers will set up structures to hold melted reactor wreckage(反应堆残骸).

People wear protective clothing and head coverings to work in the most radioactive areas around the nuclear center. But underground conditions remain dangerous and radioactive water is leaking from the melted reactors and mixing with groundwater. This water is being pumped into containers to keep it from flowing into the sea. The polluted water from underground is processed and filtered to remove dangerous radioactive elements. Tritium(氚) is the only radioactive material that remains. Japan's industry ministry and nuclear officials say tritium is not harmful in small amounts. However, although officials try to ease public fear, there are worries that fish might be affected if the water is released into the sea.

【1】What do we know from the text?

A.The Fukushinma disaster was caused by humans.

B.Tons of radioactive water has been leaked into the ocean.

C.Melted reactor wreckage will take up most of the region.

D.Japan is struggling with the clean-up of radioactive pollution.

【2】What does the underlined word "it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.Making room for the damaged reactors.

B.Releasing the water into the nearby ocean.

C.Filtering the water near the nuclear center.

D.Storing the radioactive water in the nuclear center.

【3】What does the text say about the material tritium from the fifth paragraph?

A.It can be found in the polluted water.

B.It has aroused great panic among residents.

C.It does no harm to fish.

D.It exists in a solid form.

    【4】What does the text imply?

A.The groundwater has been severely polluted in Fukushinma.

B.People in Fukushinma used to earn their living by fishing.

C.It is hard for the authorities to earn the public's trust.

D.It is unclear when TEPCO will remove the radioactive water.

  • 24、Recently, as the British doctor Robert Winston took a train from London to Manchester, he found himself having to listen to a loud conversation of a fellow passenger woman. Boiling with anger, Winston took her picture and sent it to his more than 40,000 followers on the Tweet. By the time the train reached the station in Manchester, some journalists were waiting for the woman. And ' when they showed her the doctor's messages, she used just one word to describe Winston's actions: rude.

Winston's tale is a good example of increasing rudeness, fueled by social media in our age. Studies show that rudeness spreads quickly and virally, almost like the common cold. Just witnessing rudeness makes it far more likely that we, in turn, will be rude later on. Once infected, we are more aggressive, less creative and worse at our jobs. The only way out is to make a conscious decision to do so. We must have the courage to call it out, face to face. We must say, “Just stop.” For Winston, that would have meant approaching the woman, telling her that her conversation was frustrating other passengers and politely asking her to speak more quietly or make the call at another time.

The anger we feel at the rude behavior of a stranger can drive us to do out-of-place things. Research discovered that the acts of revenge(报复)people had taken ranged from the ridiculous to the disturbing. Winston did shine a spotlight on the woman's behavior — but in a way that shamed her.

When we see rudeness occur in public places, we must step up and say something. And we can do it grace, by handling it without a bit of aggression and without being rude ourselves. Because once rude people can see their actions through the eyes of others, they are far more likely to end the rudeness themselves. As this wave of rudeness rises, civilization needs civility(举止文明).

【1】Robert Winston's reaction to the woman's behavior at the.train can be described as ______.

A.a way of returning good for evil

B.an act of answering rudeness with rudeness

C.a good example of stopping rudeness

D.an answer to the call of the journalists

【2】Being infected with rudeness can possibly lead to ______.

    A.poorer work performance

    B.more frustrated passengers

    C.wiser decisions

    D.more face-to-face communication

【3】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.How to Fix Rudeness Spread Online

    B.Civilization Calls for Civility.

C.What to say to a rude person.

D.Rude Behavior Makes a Rude Man
