21、Apples, oranges and other fruit should be kept in the fridge to last long, new supermarket labels (标签) will say, in a move which could tell the end of the traditional fruit bowl. The labels will form part of the government-backed guidance to help customers bring down the amount of food they throw by changing advice on packs of supermarket food.
Under the plan supermarkets will introduce a new “Little Blue Fridge” sign for food which should be kept chilled (冷藏), or benefit from being kept in the fridge to prevent it going off. The sign will appear on much food which is not usually kept in the fridge. For example, the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) pointed out that apples, oranges and pear, which are usually kept in a fruit bowl, should in fact be stored in the fridge.
Dr. Andrew Parry, a Special Advisor at WRAP, said, “Most fresh fruit and vegetables will keep fresher for longer if kept in their packaging and in the fridge. Generally a good way to manage fruit at home is to take out enough into the fruit bowl-if you prefer it at room temperature, but use your fridge as cold storage for the rest. This will give you more time to enjoy your food, and help cut down on waste.”
Environment Minister Therese Coffey said, “We know that confusing labels can lead to food waste by suggesting that esculent items need to be thrown away sooner. This new guidance will make packaging much clearer for customers, saving them money and cutting waste. I encourage all food businesses, large and small, to use this guidance to help them put the right date mark on food and help to guide people on the freezing products, which are key to cutting down on the amount of eatable food thrown away.”
Heather Hancock, Chairman of the Food Standards Agency, said, “I think this clear guidance can help deal with food waste, without damaging the safety of food. It will help businesses supply food that is properly described and stored, and safely provided to consumers.”
【1】Which is in line with the goal of the government-backed guidance?

22、Until late in the 20th century, most Americans spent time with people of generations. Now mid-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves. That’s because we group people by age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-care center, our 13-year-olds in school and sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior-citizen homes. Why?
We live away from the old for many reasons: young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears for aging and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it’s so hard that we stay away from the people who need us most.
Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old. And we have discovered that they often save the young.
A reporter moved her family onto a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbors and had her children deliver it and visit them. Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects. “My children have never been less lonely,” the reporter said.
The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was in a rest home when a visitor showed up with a baby. She was immediately surrounded. People who hadn’t gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had seemed asleep wake up to watch the child. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.
Grandparents are a special case. They give grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it, “my grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end.”
Grandchildren speak of attention they don’t get from worried parents. “My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down,” one friend said. A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer, more trusting.
【1】 Now in an American family, people can find that ____.
A. children never live with their parents
B. not all working people live with their parents
C. aged people are supported by their grandchildren
D. grandchildren are supported by their grandparents
【2】 The reason why old people are left alone may be that ____.
A. the old don’t like to live in a big family
B. the young can’t get enough money to support the old
C. different generations have different lifestyles
D. the old are too weak to live with the young
【3】 The fact that the reporter told us shows that ___.
A. old people in America lead a hard life
B. old people in America enjoy banana bread
C. she had no time to take care of her children
D. old people are easy to get along with
【4】 Seeing a baby, the old people get excited because ____.
A. they had never seen a baby before
B. the baby was clever and beautiful
C. the baby brought them the image of life
D. the baby’s mother would take care of them
23、One summer, when I was young, my dad built me a lemonade stand. On sunny days I would set up outside the local car wash with a cooler and my little black safe. I didn’t get many customers but I always had fun, whether I was reading a book or adding paint decorations to the safe and signs.
One customer I did have was an elderly gentleman who lived across the street from the car wash.
He would come every day where I set up and buy a glass of lemonade for his wife. Even though I only charged 25 cents, he always paid me with a $1 Sacagawea coin. I built up quite a collection by the end of the summer!
Now, as a college student, I make a point of stopping at as many lemonade stands as I can, always paying more than the kids charge me. This has been going on for almost three years now but this week, I didn’t have any money with me when I stopped at a little girl’s stand. I dug around in my car thoroughly and eventually opened up one of my moving boxes showing a black safe covered in soft cloth painted rainbows and hearts. I opened it up and sure enough, there were my Sacagawea coins. I almost shut the lid again because they mean so much to me, but then I realized that this is exactly why I had to pay with the coin. When I gave that little girl the shiny gold coin, I said, “You hang on to this one; they don’t make them any more!” And her face lit up. As I drove away, I saw her running to her sister to show her the gold coin and I knew that I had made her just as happy as I was when I was a little girl.
【1】What did the gentleman pay the author for the lemonade?
A.25 cents every time.
B.A collection of gold coins.
C.A one-dollar gold coin each time.

A.To pass the kindness.
B.To show her wealth.

D.To make the girl happy.
【3】How did the author feel when she gave the girl the coin?
A.Unwilling and hesitant.
B.Excited and willing.

A.A Kind Young Lady
B.A Shiny Gold Coin

D.A Happy Lemonade Stand
24、 At some point in elementary school, your science teacher may explained to you that there are 365 days in a year because that's how long it takes for Earth to complete one full journey around the sun. What they might not have explained, however, is that it's not exactly 365 days—it’s actually closer to 365. 2421 days.
So, if we want our calendar year to begin right when Earth begins a new turn around the sun, we have to account for roughly an extra quarter of a day each year, or one day every four years. History.com reports that the Egyptians had already been doing this for a while before Europe finally caught on in 46 BC, when Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and astronomer Sosigenes put their heads together to come up with what we now call the Julian calendar, which includes 12 months, 365 days, and an additional 'leap day' every four years on February 29.
But rounding 0.2421 up to 0.25 each year created an issue, because it didn't quite add up to a full day every four years—and that tiny difference meant that after 128 years, the calendar year ended up starting a day before Earth had completed its journey around the sun. By the 14th century, the calendar year was starting 10 days before Earth finished its orbit.
In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII sought to correct the error by suggesting that we simply skip a leap day every so often. His Gregorian calendar, which we still use today, rules that we skip the leap day during years which can be evenly divided (被整除) by 100 but not by 400. For instance, the year 2000 included a leap day because it can be divided by 100 and 400; the year 2100, on the other hand, will not include a leap day, since it's evenly divided by 100, but not by 400.
Gregory XIII’s correction to Caesar's overcorrection is itself a bit of an under-correction, so we'll probably need to reevaluate our leap day design again in about 10,000 years.
【1】What do the underlined words 'put their heads together' in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Come across each other. B.Bump their heads together.
C.Compete against each other. D.Combine their efforts.

A.2100. B.1600.
C.1800. D.2020.
【3】What can we learn from the passage?
A.Emperor Julius Caesar was also an astronomer.
B.Today's calendar exactly agrees with the sun's turning.
C.The 10-day early start in calendar will always exist.
D.The Gregorian calendar is not yet the most accurate.
【4】What's the purpose of this passage?
A.To point out a mistake made by your science teacher.
B.To explain how long Earth makes a trip around the sun.
C.To explain in detail why the leap day is needed.
D.To explain the reason why we need a calendar.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street on a cold windy day, he was not a successful seller. What's worse, he found that he only had one dime (一角硬币) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at the door, thinking about what to say when it opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” she asked. The boy paused for a while, “Excuse me, ... a drink of water?” The boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony (瘦骨嶙峋的) boy and thought he might need something to drink so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked. “How much do I owe you?” “Nothing,” she replied with a warm smile. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.” Deeply moved, he thanked her sincerely. As Howard Kelly left, he not only felt stronger physically, but the kindness also increased his faith in the whole human race, which actually he was about to quit before that point.
Years later, the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally, they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.
