22、 Thousands of years ago, people started building boats to help them explore the watery parts of the world. Boats let people find new hunting grounds and discover new lands.【1】
The earliest boats were probably logs that people sat on as they floated downstream. Later, people made these logs more useful and comfortable by burning and scraping away the insides to make dugout boats and canoes.
【2】 They tied logs together to make rafts. They wove reeds and branches to make tidy little boats that are still used in many parts of the world today. They sewed animal skins together and filled them with air — like a float you might use in a swimming pool. They used paddles, poles, and oars to help steer, or to move upstream.
Boats like the Greek trireme (三列桨船) were big and heavy and hard to steer.【3】 Soon people figured out how to use sails to catch the wind. Early sailboats might only have one or two sails. But more sails meant more power, and fast tall ships could have dozens. People still use sailboats today, for cruising and racing.
When steam engines were invented, boating became easier than ever.【4】 As engines got bigger and better, so did boats.
Over the years, boats have been used for fishing, for fighting, for carrying goods, for fun — even for living on.【5】
A.The world is a watery place.
B.It took hundreds of rowers to move a boat like that.
C.People experimented with different kinds of floating boats.
D.Boats have turned the world’s waterways into highways.
E.Until people learned to build boats, all this water was a barrier.
F.They carried people and goods farther than they’ve ever gone before.
G.Ships with steam engines could sail long distances, even if there was no wind.
23、I’ve had private health insurance my entire life. My parents were advocates of it and insisted I maintain my insurance after I left home. To be honest, I’d never really thought about it until I married and started a family of my own.
Pregnant with our first child, health insurance afforded me the doctor of my choice and a private room in the hospital of my choice. Many of my friends chose the public system and, although discharged from hospital (出院) much earlier, were provided daily home visits from a midwife (助产士) in the days following birth.
I’m happy to say all our babies were delivered safe and healthy. And while I have no regrets about “going private”, it wasn’t cheap despite my health insurance. My friends, on the other hand, paid nothing.
It wasn’t until my children turned one year old that I began to question whether health insurance was worth the monthly expense.
On the few occasions when the kids needed emergency care, we were referred to a new public hospital nearby and received first-class treatment. At that point we began to wonder if the money we were spending on private health cover could be better used elsewhere. Before I cancelled our insurance, though, I was diagnosed with cancer and that changed everything.
Thanks to my health insurance, the time between diagnosis and my first surgery was less than a week. I could recover in my own hospital room and know the team of specialists who were caring for me would be the same throughout my journey. Ten years later, they still are.
Other cancer survivors I’ve befriended along the way went public with their treatment and have no regrets either, which leads me to this conclusion: there’s no right or wrong when it comes to health insurance. I’ve kept it all these years because I like having peace of mind that my family will receive the treatment they need, when they need it. There are pros and cons for both, and only you can decide what best suits your situation.

A.Get money to cover medical expenses.
B.Maintain her private health insurance.
C.Use her insurance money somewhere else.
D.Do something to change the public system.
【4】What’s the author’s attitude to insurance now?
A.Choose your best fit.
B.Buy private insurance if you can.
C.Keep both public and private insurance.
D.Spend money carefully when it comes to insurance.
24、Who knows about sleep? Astronauts (宇航员). They have to. Their bodies are cut off from the outside world that reminds (提醒) us what time it is. But actually, it's even worse than that. An astronaut reported in his diary that he was likely to make mistakes on days following an unusually late bedtime.
So NASA started doing some serious research. They quickly realized that we're a slave to the outside world. Without light and darkness, we' re unable to regulate (管理) sleep times.
Because of modern technology, we're all living more like astronauts now. Light is no longer a function (功能) of the sun, but of always-on indoor lights, TV and computer screens. Temperature no longer follows a cycle of cooling at night and warming during the day. Is it any wonder that a third of Americans have sleep problems?
Maybe you think this doesn't affect you — or at least not much. You're wrong. Research done on non-astronauts has shown the same thing. After two weeks of six hours of sleep a night; you're drunk. By the end of two weeks, the six-hour sleepers behaved as badly as those who hadn't slept for 24 hours.
But what did they say when asked how they felt? "It's not affecting me." So if you are performing poorly because of sleep problems, you may have no idea. This is a real problem.
So what answers did NASA come up with?
Take an hour to calm down before bed. Yes, you're busy. But your time is not more valuable than an astronaut's.
Keep your bedroom dark, cool and free from noise. Even if you think "the light doesn't affect you" or "the noise isn't that bad", it can still affect sleep quality.
Another advice: forget the alarm clock (闹钟) in the morning; set an alarm to remind you to go to bed at night. When it goes off, finish up any work on the computer, and turn off any unnecessary lights. This prevents you from cheating yourself on sleep and allows you to wake up naturally.
【1】 What did NASA find about people’s sleep?
A. It takes a long time to develop regular sleep times.
B. It’s strongly influenced by the outside world.
C. It remains untouched by outside influences.
D. It’s hard to change one’s sleep habits.
【2】The biggest problem of those who haven’t enough sleep lies in the fact that .
A. they can’t fall asleep without the lights on
B. they don’t know whether they sleep well
C. they refuse to regulate their sleep times
D. they get too drunk to sleep well
【3】 What does the underlined sentence in the text mean?
A. You should make full use of your time.
B. You can find the time to get ready to sleep.
C. You can sleep later to finish your work first.
D. You should learn from astronauts’ way of sleep.
【4】 What’s the advice on the alarm clock?
A. Use it to remind you to sleep.
B. Put it far away from your bed.
C. Get up immediately when it rings.
D. Pay no attention to it when it rings.
