二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Alice Moore is a teenager entrepreneur (创业者), who in May 2015 set up her business AilieCandy. By the time she was 13, her company was worth millions of dollars with the invention of a super-sweet treat that could save kids’ teeth, instead of destroying them.

It all began when Moore visited a bank with her dad. On the outing, she was offered a candy bar. However, her dad reminded her that sugary treats were bad for her teeth. But Moore was sick of missing out on candies. So she desired to get round the warning, “Why can’t I make a healthy candy that’s good for my teeth so that my parents can’t say no to it?” With that in mind, Moore asked her dad if she could start her own candy company. He recommended that she do some research and talk to dentists about what a healthier candy would contain.

With her dad’s permission, she spent the next two years researching online and conducting experiments to get a recipe that was both tasty and tooth-friendly. She also approached dentists to learn more about teeth cleaning. Consequently, she succeeded in making a kind of candy only using natural sweeteners, which can reduce oral bacteria.

Moore then used her savings to get her business off the ground. Afterwards, she and her father secured their first business meeting with a supermarket owner, who finally agreed to sell Moore’s product — CanCandy.

As CanCandy’s success grows, so does Moore’s credibility as a young entrepreneur. Moore is enthusiastic about the candy she created, and she’s also positive about what the future might bring. She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.

Meanwhile, with her parents’ help, Moore is generally able to live a normal teenage life. Although she founded her company early on in life, she wasn’t driven primarily by profit. Moore wants to use her unique talent to help others find their smiles. She donates 10% of AilicCandy’s profits to Big Smiles. With her talent and determination, it appears that the sky could be the limit for Alice Moore.

  • 22、   Alibaba Group will extend its digital operating system to 1.5 million small neighborhood stores in China. Under the so-called Plan W, Alibaba is looking to develop a number of smaller shops with a daily revenue (收入) of over 10,000 yuan ($1,456) in lower-tier cities, townships and villages.

The latest move falls under Alibaba’s Ling Shou Tong (LST) business unit, which connects the millions of street stands in China and improves marketing, delivery, and inventory (库存) management abilities through digital means. The data-backed retail (零售) management system has been designed to digitize the business of millions of mom and pop stores and neighborhood convenience stores.

Alibaba will offer a smart point-of-sale system, some 10,000 exclusive new product offerings, and a variety of online touchpoints to help users access offline stores virtually. Alibaba intends to help these mom and pop stores double or even triple their revenue, and they can sell more efficiently, and get flexibility to refill stocks based on their changing needs.

Its POS machine performs every function throughout the retail process and provides real-time suggestions. For instance, it would send out alerts on potential stock shortage, and would recommend cost-effective purchase to enhance the store’s profitability. The machine also collects average selling price for a certain product in the nearby areas, thereby giving references to shop-owners to make informed pricing decisions.

Furthermore, an inventory monitoring system is in operation to give real-time advice on product display. This is coupled with a three-layer warehouse system covering 200 cities and townships to ensure the timely delivery of products, based on geographical shopping preferences that are present in Alibaba’s data book.

Despite slow consumption growth at home and abroad, one in every five small shops surveyed by LST reported they have bucked the trend and witnessed positive revenue growth. Average daily revenue surpassed 7,000 yuan, as compared with the 3,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan range for average offline stores.

1What’s probably the aim of Plan W?

A.To open 1.5 million small neighbourhood stores in China.

B.To improve supermarkets’ digital operating system in urban areas.

C.To increase revenue of smaller shops through digital means.

D.To move Ling Shou Tong business unit to under-developed areas.

2How can Alibaba’s POS machine make a difference?

    A.By warning possible stock shortage.

B.By increasing profit at a higher price.

C.By comparing prices of a product in different cities.

D.By offering shop-owners advice on bargaining.

3What does the underlined word “bucked” in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Followed. B.Resisted.

    C.Neglected. D.Taken.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.Application of digital means to small shops.

B.Real secrets of Alibaba group’s success.

C.Great hope of street stands in China.

D.Possible ways of increasing small shops’ profit.

The family spent a lot of time in wooded areas. Jean and her twin brothers learned how to build shelters and find food in the woods.

She and her family started exploring wilderness areas all over the country. The family had more than 170 animals, although not all at once. The pets were always free to stay or go.

  • 24、Sooner or later, most students are to take some form of English examinations. Often the more successful students are better prepared. However, sometimes students who do well have better test taking skills. These abilities really have nothing to do with understanding English better. They are skills that make taking the test easier, and therefore provide better results.

Here are some very important—and often ignored—guidelines to taking a test successfully.

Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. This is extremely important. Remember one question may only be worth one point! You will become nervous when you fail to find out its answer, making you lose your concentration and leading to worse results.

Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more difficult questions. Sometimes questions asked are answered in later questions asking for different things.

Usually(but not always) a strong first impulse(冲动) means we know the answer and we don’t really have to think about it too much. Going back to think about it usually makes you unsure and often causes a mistake. This is very common, so be very careful!

If you don’t know the answer, write something. If you are answering a 4 possibility multiple choice question you will still have a 25% chance of being correct!

Taking a test is as much for you as is for your teacher, so never cheat. If you cheat, you don’t help yourself in the long run.

【1】In the first paragraph, the writer stresses the importance of ______.

    A. better preparations for exams.

    B. better understanding of English.

    C. better skills at taking exams.

    D. better results of taking exams.

【2】When taking an exam, you are advised ______.

    A. to first answer the questions which are easier to you.

    B. to depend on your first impulse to answer the questions.

    C. to search the test paper for all the answers to the questions.

    D. to give up the questions whose answers you don’t know.

【3】It is common that many students______.

    A. pay much attention to their testing skills.

    B. often give up a difficult test halfway.

    C. often get higher results by cheating.

    D. don’t believe in their first impulse.

【4】What would be the best title of the passage?

    A. Effective Studying Methods.

    B. Effective Test Taking Skills.

    C. Getting Better Exam Results

    D. Being Successful Students.
