21、The world’s oceans will likely lose about one-sixth of their fish and other creatures within 100 years if climate change continues on its current path. Every degree Celsius that the world’s oceans warm, their biomass is expected to drop five percent, a study found.
The study predicts that if there is no change in the rate of worldwide greenhouse gas production, there will be a 17-percent loss of biomass by the year 2100. But, if the world reduces carbon pollution, biomass losses could be limited to only about 5 percent.
Warming temperatures are the biggest issue. But climate change also produces oceans that are more acidic and have less oxygen. This also harms sea life. Much of the world depends on the oceans for food or work.
The findings make sense and the possible effects of the predicted losses of animal life are huge. “Climate change has the potential to cause serious new conflicts over ocean resource use as the human population continues to grow,” said scientists.
Marine biologist Boris Worm, who helped run the study, added that the “building blocks of marine life—plankton and bacteria—may decline less heavily.”
“Those marine animals that we use directly, and care about most deeply, are predicted to suffer the most,” said Worm. He works at Canada’s Dalehousie University.
Scientists had already believed climate change would likely reduce future ocean life. But past computer-based studies looked at only part of the picture or used only one model. The latest study used six different computer models to give the best picture look yet, William Cheung said.
University of Georgia marine biologist Samantha Joye was not part of the research. But she praised the study as well researched and extremely detailed, and called it “an urgent call for action”.
【1】What does the underlined word “biomass” in paragraph 1 refer to?

D.It may increase the world population.
【3】Which sea animals will be harmed the worst by sea warming?
A.The largest ones.
B.The ones in deep oceans.
C.The bacteria on sea surface.
D.Those we humans need most.
【4】What makes this study different from previous studies according to William Cheung?
A.Purpose of the study on oceans.
B.Computers used in the research.
C.Improvement of research methods.
D.Discovery of damage of climate change.
22、If you’re looking to spend an afternoon with coffee and cute dogs, there’s a new cafe in Silver Lake designed to help you do just that. It’s called the Dog Cafe, and its owner is describing it as the first such cafe in the U.S.
The idea is to create a new way for people to adopt shelter dogs. Customers are able to buy a coffee or tea drink, then sit in an adjacent(相邻的) dog area, where they can play with dogs from a nearby shelter. All of the dogs in the area are up for adoption.
Sarah Wolfgang, the cafe’s founder and owner, said she was inspired by the animal cafes found in South Korea, but notes that the dogs in those cafes came from puppy mills(幼犬繁殖厂).
Her Dog Cafe focuses on “saving dogs who have been at the shelter the longest because of health or behavioral problems and are at the highest risk of being euthanized( 使安乐死),” according to the cafe’s website.
The coffee shop of the cafe has drinks made with products from Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. and Dogs Drink Coffee (both give some of the money they make to animals in need): pour-over coffee, teas, lattes and flavored lemonades. Because of the nearness to dogs, there isn’t any food served at the cafe. There is an area selling dog goods.
Admission to the dog area is $10 per person for a 55-minute block of time. You can make a booking and find a full list of dogs for adoption on the cafe’s website. The Dog Cafe area and coffee shop is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm.
【1】What’s Sarah Wolfgang’s purpose of opening the Dog Cafe?
A.To encourage adoption of dogs.
B.To help people get on with dogs.
C.To produce coffee for dogs.
D.To buy and sell dogs.
【2】Sarah Wolfgang’s idea of the Dog Cafe came from ________.
A.her strong love for wild animals
B.a visit to a nearby dog shelter
C.the animal cafes in South Korea
D.her plan to run the first animal cafe
【3】What do we know about the dogs Sarah wants to save?
A.They will be killed for meat.
B.They are dangerous to customers.
C.They are badly treated at the shelter.
D.They have health or behavioral problems.
【4】What can you do in the Dog Cafe?
A.Order some food.

D.Enter the dog area free.
23、China is a land of bikes. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I’ve found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it’s the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors---sivler, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It’s fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can’t provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn’t want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.
【1】According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A.Because they are traditional and safe.
B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C.Because they are colorful and available.
D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.
【2】The author decided to buy a bicycle because he wanted ________.
A.to ride it for fun
B.to use it for transport
C.to experience local culture
D.to improve his riding skills
【3】Which of the following best describes the author’s biking experience?
A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.
B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C.The author was praised by the other bikers.
D.The author took great pleasure in biking.
【4】According to the text, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Riding bikes in China can be a very dangerous and terrible thing.
B.China is a land of bikes, because most Chinese people are too poor to own private cars.
C.For many, riding bikes is the easiest and cheapest way to travel today.
D.It’s fun watching people biking, because of the funny people.
24、 To many people, honey bees symbolize development, sustainability (可持续性) and environmentalism. But as a honey bee researcher, I have to tell you that only the first item on that list is reasonable. Although they are important for agriculture, honey bees also damage natural ecosystems by competing with native bees — some of which are species at risk.
The rise in honey beekeeping, now a popular activity for hundreds of thousands of Americans, followed strong awareness campaigns to “save the bees.” But as a species, honey bees are least in need of saving. Media attention unfairly covers them over native bees, and vague messaging has led many citizens — myself once included — to believe they are doing a good thing for the environment by putting on a beekeeper’s veil. Unfortunately, they are probably doing more harm than good.
“Beekeeping is for people; it’s not a conservation practice,” says Sheila Colla, an assistant professor and conservation biologist at Toronto’s York University, Canada. “People mistakenly think keeping honey bees, or helping honey bees, is somehow helping the native bees, which are at risk of extinction.” She is frustrated the ones in more neon on saving honey bees when, from a conservationist’s point of view, native bees are the ones in more need of support.
For some reason, maybe because they are small, honey bees are not generally viewed as the massively distributed livestock animal that they are. There are millions of honey bee colonies in North America, 2.8 million of which are in the U.S. Approximating around 30,000 bees per colony (the size of a pollination unit), that’s roughly a billion honey bees in Canada and the U.S. alone — almost triple the number of people. High densities of honey bee colonies increase competition between native bees, putting even more pressure on the wild species that are already in decline.
I used to believe that honey bees were a gateway species, and that concern over their health and development would spill over onto native bees, benefitting them, too. While this may have happened in some cases, evidence is increasing that misguided enthusiasm for honey bees has likely been to the native bees’ damage. Beekeeping doesn’t make me feel good, anymore. In fact, quite the opposite.
【1】What makes bee keeping gain great popularity among Americans?
A.Several campaigns have been launched to advocate bee saving.
B.Citizens believe native bees are no longer in need of protection.
C.Little importance are attached to protecting the environment.
D.Citizens hope to make a fortune from the bee keeping business.
【2】What is the Colla’s possible attitude towards the beekeeping?
A.Objective. B.Unfavorable. C.Supportive. D.Neutral.
【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The author’s attitude towards the beekeeping has changed.
B.People’s enthusiasm for keeping honey bees is increasing.
C.In some cases evidence has proved honey bees are in danger.
D.Keeping native bees is of great benefit to people’s health.
