二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A walker seriously injured in a mountain-top lightning strike which killed two others is showing signs of improvement, the police have said. A major rescue operation was performed on Sunday following two strikes which hit the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. Two men died, while two others were taken to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said, “A man in a serious condition in hospital, following simultaneous (同时发生的) incidents in the Brecon Beacons, has now improved and he is recovering. Officers are continuing to get in touch with the next of relatives of the dead men and enquiries are ongoing. All men were believed to be from England.”

Mark Jones, of the Brecon Mountain Rescue Team, described the lightning strike as a freak accident, and something he had not been called out to in 30 years of service.

The walking group Ramblers Cymru said that while incidents involving thunder and lightning were rare, electrical storms should be taken seriously by walkers.

The organisation’s delivery officer, Elly Hannigan Popp, said, “We’d advise everyone to check the weather forecast before starting a walk. If you hear thunder, see lightning or if your hair stands on end, postpone activities even if the sky looks blue and clear. Lightning will strike as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. Lightning can strike the same place repeatedly— especially tall, pointed, isolated objects.”

“If there is no shelter you should keep moving. And if you become the tallest object, crouch () in the open twice as far away from the nearest pointed object as it is tall. Make yourself as small as possible, stay on your toes and keep your heels together, as it will allow electricity to go up one foot, through the heels and back into the ground through the other.”

1What can we learn about the victims of the incident?

    A. Both of the injured men are recovering slowly,

    B. The bodies of the two men haven’t been found.

    C. The four men involved may be from the same country.

    D. The police cannot contact the two dead men’s relatives.

2Why did the author quote the police spokeswoman in Paragraph 2?

    A. Because the accident is very serious.

    B. To announce where the victims come from.

    C. Because the police are looking into the accident.

    D. To tell the readers some facts of the incident.

3What do the last two paragraphs tell us?

    A. Harm done by lightning.   B. Warnings from a delivery officer.

    C. First aid in a lightning incident.   D. Safety tips on a lightning strike.

  • 22、Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy recently declared children’s mental health is a national crisis.

In December 2021,Dr.Murthy issued a report to highlight the additional pressures the COVID- 19 pandemic(流行病)had put on the country’s youth, and the urgent need to address this. The impact of this crisis is far-reaching, and new research shows that it’s affecting parents’well-being, plus their ability to succeed at work and provide for their families.

“On Our Sleeves, a national movement that aims to break shame around children’s mental health, surveyed more than 3,000 working parents across the US and found that eight in 10 parents are very concerned about their child’s mental health and development or behavior in the past two years. Children’s mental health concerns have been hiding in plain sight for many years, surrounded by confusion and shame,”says Marti Bledsoe Post, the director of On Our Sleeves.

The survey found that 53% of working parents have missed work at least once per month to deal with their children’s mental health. And 71% of parents said issues with their child’s mental or emotional well-being made the stresses of work much more difficult to cope with.

“Employers need to know that many of their employees are struggling and it impinging their work as a result,”says Bledsoe Post.“Our mission with On Our Sleeves is to provide every family in America access to free, evidence-based educational resources. We see this study as incredibly important in starting the conversation and providing solutions for working families.”

  • 24、   Failure is an unavoidable part of life. Though science has named some life skills that promise success, we're told over and over again that no great success was ever achieved without failure -- or many failed attempts. One of life's most important lessons, therefore, has to be how to handle failure best. But what is the message?

For starters, ignore advice from anyone that tells you, “Don't beat yourself up about it,” no matter how well-meaning they are. According to the new research from the University of Kansas, we absolutely should be beating ourselves up when we fail. Marketing professor Noelle Nelson and her team found that the more emotional a person's response is to failure, the more likely they are to achieve better results the next time they deal with a related task.

The researchers carried out two experiments in which undergraduate students were required to perform specific tasks. In one experiment, they were asked to search online for a squeezer and report the lowest price they could find with the possibility of winning a $50 cash prize. However, the task was controlled, and all participants were told (by a computer) that the lowest price was $3.27 less than their reported price. Consequently, no participant won the cash prize. When the results were announced, some participants were asked to focus on their emotional response, and others on their cognitive (认知的) response. During the next similar task, participants who focused on their emotional response to failure made more effort than those who focused on a cognitive response.

Everybody has their own unique challenges, responsibilities, duties, and projects, but these findings are related to all of us. Your personal failure may be a cake that fails to rise, a presentation that goes wrong, or a deadline that gets missedit doesn't matter. What matters is how you react to it. Instead of thinking about the failure, let yourself feel bad about it. Then follow this advice on how to bounce back after your failure.

1What's the relationship between failure and success?

A.Failure promises success. B.Failure is the key to success.

C.Failure does damage to success. D.Well-handled failure is good for success.

2Why does the writer support beating oneself up when failing?

    A.It's a well-meaning suggestion for failure.

B.It's been proved by the study of a university.

C.Being emotional is good for his future success.

D.It can make people less emotional about failure.

3Which can be the best title for the passage?

A.Personal Failure Is a Cake That Fails to Appear

B.The Most Productive Way to Handle Any Failure

C.Different Methods to Change Failure into Success

D.The Reason Why Failure Is the Mother of Success
