  • 21、London Cycle Hire Scheme

Renting a bike is not only one of the most pleasant ways to travel around the back streets of London, it’s also one of the cheapest. Approximately 12,000 bikes are available to rent 24 hours a day, all year round. You can hire a bike from any of the 800 docking stations and return it anywhere on the network. The three-speed bikes are pretty strong. They come with a bell, a front basket and a chain guard. The front and back lights come on when you start pedalling and the seat height is easily adjustable.

    How much does it cost?

Unfortunately, the free under-30-mimite-ride deal was canceled in September 2022.

    • £ 1.65 per 30 minutes

    How to hire a bike?

There are two ways to hire a bike—at a clocking station terminal or via an app (the easier way).

    At a docking station

    • Touch the screen and insert a credit or debit card. The machine will print a receipt with a release code.

    • Enter the release code. Wait until the green light flashes, pull out your bike and go.

Via the Santander cycle hire app

Smartphone users can now use an iOS or Android app to hire and pay for a hike. However, using the app does not reserve a bike. You still only have 10 minutes to use the release code, so make sure you’re near the docking station when you use it.

Please note: You have to be 18 or over to pay for a bike. You also need a credit or debit card — cash is not accepted.

【1】How much should you pay for renting a bike for 2 hours?

    A.£1.65.

    B.£ 3.3.

    C.£4.95.

    D.£ 6.6.

【2】What should you pay attention to when renting a bike via an app?

    A.Providing your personal information.

    B.Taking enough cash.

    C.Minding the time limit.

    D.Making a reservation.

【3】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A.Bike rental service.

    B.A docking station.

    C.Traveling in London.

    D.A bike hiring app.

  • 22、The spring before our son Hank was scheduled to enter kindergarten, we were invited to the school's “Kindergarten Round-up”. The title led me to believe that Hank and I would be enjoying a fun night.999

We arrived to find several on-the-spot tests to see where Hank ranked academically. Somewhat nervously, I watched as Hank recited the alphabet (字母表), counted as high as he could, and arranged blocks in a series of confusing patterns. So far, so good. I breathed a sigh of relief.

“All right, Hank,” the tester said, “just a few more easy questions.” Then she explained to me that she wanted to hear what Hank thinks was the logical thing to do in certain situations. I smiled and nodded, but inside I felt a fresh flash of panic. What if Hank couldn't reach any logical conclusions?

After several dialogues, like “Eating too much sugar?” “Tooth decay!”, the tester nodded her head. “Okay, Hank, tell me what you'd do if you went into a dark room.” Without thinking, Hank said, “Be brave.”

The tester waited a moment before promoting, “What else would you do? Wouldn't you turn on a light?” “Oh, yeah,” Hank said, “if I could reach it.”

Obviously, being brave wasn't the expected answer, but as I listened, all I could think about was how many events awaited him when bravery would be enormously helpful. While it's smart to turn on a light, it never hurts to be brave while you're waiting for your eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness. From the mouth of my child, I realized that I'd handed my son advice that applied to my life just as much as it did to his.

Hank and I left the "Kindergarten Round-up" with a light heart, both believing he was going to be just fine.

【1】What’s the purpose of the “Kindergarten Round-up”?

    A.To evaluate kids' academic level.

B.To help kids pass kindergarten tests.

C.To let parents learn about kindergarten.

    D.To please pre-schoolers.

【2】How did the author feel at the beginning of the logical test?

    A.Pleased.

    B.Relaxed.

    C.Worried.

    D.Confident.

【3】What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 6?

A.She taught Hank an important lesson.

B.She was happy about Hank's answer.

C.She got valuable advice from the tester.

D.She was dissatisfied with the tester's reaction.

【4】What's the best title for the text?

A.No Need to Turn on a Light

    B.Kindergarten Will Just Be Fine

    C.A Fruitless Kindergarten Round-up

D.Being Brave Is the Same Important

    HardbackI256 pagesIPublished 20/04/2021

    Availability:In Stock

    DESCRIPTION

Certainly, life on Earth will come to an end, whether because of climate disaster, world wars, or the death of the sun in a few billion years. To avoid dying out,we will have to find a new home planet, perhaps even a new solar system,to live.

In this challenging and interesting book,Christopher Mason argues that we have a duty to do just that.We have a responsibility to act—not only for us human beings but for all other creatures on which we depend.

Mason argues that our technology that has enabled us to build rockets and land on other planets can be applied to redesigning biology so that we can live on those planets. And he makes a 500- year plan for carrying out the huge project.

As they are today, our weak human bodies could never survive(幸存)travel to another planet.Mason describes the bad effects that long-term space travel had on astronaut Scott Kelly, who returned from a year on the International Space Station with changes to his blood, bones, and genes(基因) .

Mason suggests a ten-period,500-year program that would engineer our body so that humans can stand the extreme(极端的)environments of outer space— with the final goal of achieving human settlement of new solar systems. He makes a roadmap of which solar systems to visit first, and uses biotechnology and genetics to offer a unique vision of the universe to come.
