二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A few books recommended by Bill Gates

Reading is my favorite way to indulge (放纵)my desire to know the world. Although I get to meet with a lot of interesting people and visit fascinating places through my work, I still think books are the best way to explore new topics that interest you. Here are four amazing books I read recently:

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, by Matthew Desmond. If you want a good understanding of how the issues that cause poverty are twisted (交织)together, you should read this book. Desmond gave me a better sense of what it is like to be poor in this country than anything else I have read.

Energy and Civilization: A History, by Vaclav Smil. Smil is one of my favorite authors, and this is his most famous book. He presents clearly how our need for energy has shaped human history. It’s not the easiest book to read, but at the end you’ll feel smarter and better informed about how energy innovation changes the course of civilizations.

The Best We Could Do, by Thi Bui. This novel explores what it means to be a parent and a refugee (难 民).The author’s family fled Vietnam in 1978. After giving birth to her own child, she decides to learn more about her parents’ experiences of growing up in a country torn apart by foreign occupiers.

Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death, and JazzChickens, by Eddie Izzard. Izzard’s personal story in this book is attractive: he survived a difficult childhood and worked continuously to overcome his lack of natural talent and become an international star. If you’re a huge fen of him like I am, you’ll love this book. His written voice is very similar to his stage voice, and I found myself laughing out loud several times while reading it.

1What does Matthew Desmond try to explore?

    A.Different causes of poverty.

    B.The struggle of poor people.

    C.How to escape from poverty.

D.Ways to live in a poor country.

2The book Energy and Civilization: A History fells into the category of_____.

    A.economy B.education C.literature D.history

3What do the last two books have in common?

A.They are popular around the world.

B.They are expected to inspire readers.

C.They focus on lives of ordinary people.

D.They are based on personal experiences.

  • 22、Almost all of us do it. We get up early to go to the gym. We stay up too late responding to work emails. Or we end up bingeing(狂欢) on Netflix (网络剧集,电影)in bed. Whatever it is, we often cut corners when it comes to sleep.

If you can squeeze(挤出)in even an extra hour, it will almost certainly make you look better, feel better, and be better at your job. But an extra hour should be just the beginning, experts' caution. The real benefits of sleep come from setting a personal, optimal(最佳的)sleeping schedule—and sticking to it no matter what.

It turns out that the benefits of more sleep—and consistent sleep—are diverse and plentiful. “You are going to feel better, you will have more energy, you will have better ideas, you will contribute to your team or organization in a better way," says Rachel Salas, a professor of neurology who specializes in sleep medicine and sleep disorders at Johns Hopkins University in the US.

"Your mood is going to be better, you will have better reason to engage and share ideas," she says. It will also show on the outside—skimp on sleep and you may find yourself “gaining weight and looking tired with bags under your eyes".

In 2013, the BBC partnered with the University of Surrey's Sleep Research Centre for an experiment that found an extra hour of sleep improved participants' mental agility in computer texts.

An American study last month showed that students who slept for eight hours a night performed better in final exams. One from the University of Michigan in October found that a lack of sleep affected memory and job performance in fields as varied as baking and surgery.

Another study found that two nights in a row of less than six hours' sleep could make you sluggish(萎靡不振)for the next six days. And a Swedish study published this year which looked at over 40,000 participants for 13 years found that those who slept for short periods had higher mortality rates(死亡率)than those who don't,especially among over 65s.

Problems that appear over the long haul(拖)could be weight gain, migraines(偏头疼),or constant fatigue(疲乏). It could be sleep apnoea or even what she calls "microsleeps"—when your brain briefly shuts down during the day for just a few seconds, sometimes with your eyes open (an obvious danger to drivers, for example).

  • 24、   A technology company is developing a lie detector app for smartphones that could be used by parents, teachers and Internet daters.

The app measures blood flow in the face to assess whether or not you are telling the truth. Its developers say that it could be used for daters wanting to see if somebody really is interested in them. Parents could use it on their children to see if they are lying and teachers could work out which of their pupils are truthful.

The app is being developed by Toronto startup NuraLogix and the software is called Transdermal-Optical Imaging.

The idea is that different human emotions create different facial blood flow patterns that we have no control over. These patterns change if we are telling the truth or telling a lie. Using footage from the smartphone camera, the software will see the changes in skin color and compare them to standardized results. A study found that anger was associated with more blood flow and redness while sadness was associated with less of both.

Kang Lee, who has been researching the field for 20 years, said that the lie detector test will let you find out the truth “non-invasively, and remotely, and sometimes it can be covertly

He said, “It could be very useful, for example, for teachers. A lot of our students have math anxiety but they do not want to tell us, because that’s embarrassing.”

Lee added that the technology would not replace lie detectors used in a court of law. He said, “They want the accuracy to be extremely high, like genetic tests, and a one-in-a-million error rate. Our technique won’t be able to achieve an extremely high accuracy level, and because of that I don’t think it’s useful for the courts.”

He added that it will be a few years before the dating app is available to consumers.

    1How does the app work?

    A.By monitoring the heartbeat.

B.By analyzing the blood flow in the face.

    C.By measuring one’s blood pressure.

D.By checking the words one says.

2Who might find the app useful?

    A.A consumer buying a smartphone.

B.A student working on a math problem.

    C.A judge in court.

D.A parent concerned about his child.

3The underlined word “covertly” probably means________.

    A.violently B.artificially

    C.secretly D.confidently

4We can learn from the passage that________.

A.it takes some time for the dating app to be put to use

B.it has been proved that the app is more effective in court than at school

C.the app matches genetic tests in accuracy

D.the app comes from the idea that we can control our facial blood flow patterns
