22、The Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful spot for a fall getaway. Driving along the parkway, people can see more than 100 species of trees and their leaves changing color. The 469-mile roadway passes through six mountain chains in the Appalachians in Virginia and North Carolina.

Ney says many things affect when the leaves change color. The elevation, or how high up the trees are in the mountains, is one thing. The highest part of the parkway is 6,053 feet. Leaves start changing there first, Ney says. The leaves lower down change later. “The amount of rainfall, daytime sunshine and nighttime temperature also add to the equation(因素). Fall storms can often blow the leaves right off the trees,” she adds.
Ney recommends that travelers visit a long section of the parkway with a variety of heights. She suggests people stop at trails or overlooks with good views. “You can see leaves at different elevations and have a greater opportunity to see fall color,” she says.
