21、Upon entering college, Yang Yi was uncertain about a lot of things. However, the 19-year-old international economics and trade student was certain about one thing: She wanted to participate in animal welfare efforts.
“I'm .always a nature and animal lover," she said. She joined the environmental protection association at her school. Now being president of a group of 25, she leads its efforts to help stray(流浪)cats and dogs by raising money to buy them food and collecting old clothes to make them homes.
However, sometimes the association raises doubts. Some students have questioned whether helping stray animals breaks the laws of nature. "We tried to resolve the controversy," Yang said. “For wild animals, the best way to protect them is to preserve their environment and their natural habitat, and to let them live their own way. However, for animals that depend heavily on humans, such as dogs and cats, the proper way to treat them is to respect them and take care of them." Besides, if not accommodated properly, stray animals can bring threats to public health, as they are the main cause of rabies(狂犬病)in cities. "Now, many young people in China have agreed upon the need to strike a balance between humans and nature. The only problem is how," said Yang. Yang and her fellow volunteers are cautious about what they do to help. For instance, sometimes people feed stray cats human food such as chocolate. But Yang and her friends point that such food can be dangerous to stray cats.
Yang also cooperates with Non-Governmental Organizations to spread animal protection knowledge. One of their recent exhibits was about animals in the entertainment industry. "We are still figuring out the best way to protect animals, but simple deeds such as saying no to animal performances can prevent wildlife from being captured and tamed. Step by step, we'll eventually reach our goal," she said.

22、How to Stop Being Angry?
Anger is the most harmful emotion. When you are in a temper, you make rush or ill-considered decisions that you will probably regret. You will also regret terrible language spoken without thought. Anger arrives quickly, in response to an event, action, or wrong remarks.【1】You might feel long-burning anger that ruins your spirit, destroys all your good intentions, and causes you to become an unpleasant person. Here are some ways that you can help you better handle anger.
Firstly, you need to change your attitude to the way the world works. No one is perfect. Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you, nor will they behave in the same way that you would in a given situation.【2】You have to accept that sometimes things do go wrong and that people are not always lovely.
【3】Martin Luther King was angry about the lack of civil rights in the USA. Gandhi was angry about British domination in. India. They both used that anger to motivate themselves to fight against what they saw as injustice. Taking action can help to reduce the feelings of anger as you see progress towards your final goal.
Try to get to the root cause of your anger.【4】Is it worry or stress making you angry? Are you fearful of failure? Are you unhappy? Once you know why you get mad, then it is possible to deal with the cause. Taking positive steps towards solving the underlying problem will help you overcome feelings of anger.
In conclusion, you must recognize that anger is something you can control. That control will come once you identify what is at the root of your anger. Make changes to your lifestyle and attitudes, and you will find that you will turn angry much less often, if at all. Angry people are not nice people.【5】
A.Anger can be used to fuel action.

23、 When you are standing in front of fruit shelves in the supermarket, what is your attitude toward the imperfect tomatoes? Will you be blind to the ugly tomatoes without any hesitation and even throw them aside in disgust? Or will you put them in the shopping baskets without discrimination(歧视)? Most of you will be the former.
Ugly produce is always left along the whole supply chain. After rounds of selection from farmers, packers and retailers, the annual percentage of eatable food waste is more than 30%(900,000 tons)before the produce arrives at shop shelves. These eatable wastes can feed over 2 million people per year. Besides, we also should not ignore the investment in the production process and the pollution caused by rot. For example, one-kilogram apple production consumes 822 litres of water. One ton of vegetables or fruits that are thrown away can produce around 800 litres of polluted water. And food transport is also a source of greenhouse gas.
Is there any great option to maximize farmer interests and reduce further losses? The answer is "YES". After Woolworth in Australia and Countdown in New Zealand introduced "The Odd Bunch", many retailers in America attempted to develop similar projects that could build a bridge between consumers and farmers, and offer ugly produce at more competitive prices. Through these projects, retail enterprises have built corporate reputation and gained confidence from the public. Farmers have significantly reduced the planting cost because of vast purchasing requirements from retailers. Consumers have enjoyed the similar taste at lower prices.
All the food is born equal, and all the food has the same right to be enjoyed. We shouldn't discriminate food through its uncommon looking. Life's "misery"(eg. exposure to the burning sun)will contribute to a more pleasant taste of food. Please value the unique appearance and qualities of these special foods!
【1】What does the underlined phrase "the former" in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Hesitating in front of the ugly tomatoes.
B.Leaving the ugly tomatoes on the shelves.
C.Picking out the ugly tomatoes from the shelves.
D.Buying the ugly tomatoes without discrimination.
【2】What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.Ugly food attracts consumers' attention.
B.Food selection leads to the rise in prices.
C.Millions starve to death because of food waste.
D.Discrimination against ugly food causes pollution.

24、“I Went Skydiving at 84!”
As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 2011,when my husband arranged for me me ride in a hot air balloon for my birthday. But the experience turned out to be very dull. Around that time ,I told my husband that I wanted to skydive. So when our retirement community(社区)announced that they were having an essay competition and the topic was an experience of a lifetime that you wanted to have, I decided to write about my dream.
In the essay, I wrote about my desire to skydive, stating George Brush Sr. did it at age 80. Why not me? I was just 84 and in pretty good health. A year went by and I heard nothing. But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners. I just couldn’t believe it.
One june 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane. My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience. The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience. When we reachen 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane. When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe. For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer. We were in a free fall for about a minute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes. Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air ballon. I was just enjoying it.
Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life. I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old. If there’s something you want to experience, look into it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容及所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Christmas was approaching, and I had no idea what to get for my wife. We had just moved to Italy. Donna was away attending an important meeting, so I had the rest of the week to figure out what to get her as a Christmas gift before she got back.
My house partner while Donna was away was her cat, Princess, who was everything that her name implied. I was keeping Princess indoors in our new home until she became familiar with the place and then planned to slowly introduce her to the great outdoors. Princess had other ideas, and slipped out of the house as I was bringing in some food. By the time I had turned around and gone back out of the door to look for her, she was gone.
Donna would be back in a few days and it would ruin Christmas for both of us if Princess was not back by then, safe and sound. Donna had already excitedly told me over the phone that she had found several fun toys and delicious snacks for Princess as Christmas gifts. She couldn’t wait to get back and wrap them up.
I was in big trouble. I had to find Princess as soon as possible. So, I made up a poster of the cat that I personally drew because I couldn’t find a photo of her anywhere. I was sure my wife had hundreds on her phone, but I didn’t dare ask her for one. Perhaps because my poster were not so clear, soon people in the area came to my house with several homeless cats. Though Princess wasn’t among them, I let them stay in our yard. I figured Donna would understand.
Donna’s happy daily calls continued, as did my daily searches for Princess. I still hadn’t mentioned anything about the disappearance to my wife. Finally, the day came for my wife to return.
