22、Look and listen, and that concert poster just might be singing. Engineers have designed antennas(天线)that can turn everyday objects, from posters to clothing, into radio stations. Anyone walking or driving by can tune in and hear what’s on. The devices use radio waves, but they don’t generate their own. They hijack(劫持)the same waves that carry music and news to your smartphone.
Vikram Iyer co-led the project with Anran Wang, a graduate student in computer science and engineering. The two got the idea for their invention by paving attention to what was already around them. “It's the ideal way to minimize the power consumption for any kind of communication,” notes Iyer. Their research had focused on new types of wireless communications that won’t require much energy. They wanted something that would work outdoors in a city. Then they realized the air is already filled with wireless communications in the form of radio stations.
Radio waves carry energy at the speed of light from tall transmission towers to radios in cars, phones and homes. These waves of the antennas take in existing radio waves and change them slightly. Those changes add new sound information. The changed waves are then sent back out into the world where people can listen in. So the device only needs enough power to change the waves, not to generate them.
The scientists tested their device with a poster. It advertised a Seattle concert by Simply Three. People standing almost 4 meters away from the poster could use FM receivers on smartphones to listen to all songs of the band's music. Those in cars as far as 18 meters away could use car radios to pick up some parts of the songs.
The technology could even extend to clothes. Iyer, Wang and their team turned the shirt into an antenna. It let the shirt talk to the wearer’s smartphone. If a sensor in the shirt tracked a person’s heart rate during exercise, for instance, the antenna could transmit those data to the wearer’s phone.

A. The working principle of the antennas.
B. The way the antennas take in radio waves.
C. The benefit people can get from the antennas.
D. The situation where the antennas can be used.
【4】What can be inferred from the text?
A. The antennas can be available at present.
B. Vikram Iyer created the antennas with much money.
C. The antennas cannot be used in the students’ dormitory and classroom.
D. The closer people stay to the antennas, the stronger signals they pick up.
23、Table Manners
We all like to think we have good table manners, but what you consider proper table manners may actually be considered rude in another country! Lets explore some strange table manners around the world.
Most people believe that it is bad manners to slurp(出声地吃或喝) or hold your soup bowl up to your mouth【1】 Slurping in Japan is an indication that the food is good. Therefore, in Japan, slurping is considered polite.
【2】In some cultures, finishing all the food on your plate is a sign that your host did not provide you with enough food. Filipinos, Koreans and Thais will all think like this. In many cases your host will continue to serve you each time you clear your plate For Japanese people, however, finishing all the food on one's plate is a sign to the host that the meal is delicious and that you appreciate the meal.
【3】This is a belief in many Asian countries, including Thailand, Japan and China. It's considered taboo(禁忌 )because during funerals (丧礼), bowls of rice with chopsticks sticking in them are offered to the dead
Don’t cut your salad with a knife in France. Proper etiquette(礼节) in France when eating a salad to fold the salad leaves onto your fork if they are too big to put in your mouth. You should never cut your salad with a knife. 【4】.
Pay attention to forks. Have you ever been to a fancy western restaurant, not sure which fork to use?
【5】Fin Thai culture the proper way to enjoy Thai food is with a spoon in your right hand and a fork in your left. Some countries don’t even use forks but rather eat with their hands, like India, Nepal and Pakistan

24、A new study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family claims that all that time you spend parenting just doesn’t matter. But it’s a claim that, despite the enthusiastic and widespread coverage by the media, does not hold water.
The research suggests that child outcomes (including behavior problems, emotional problems, and academic performance) are barely connected with the time that parents spend with their children. The researchers examined the time diaries of 1, 600 children, looking at parenting time and outcomes when the kids were aged 3 to 11 in 1997, and again in 2002,when they were between 8 and 16.
This research largely reflects the failure of the authors to correctly measure parental input (投入). It just looked at time diaries from two particular days—one a weekday and the other a weekend day.
Trying to get a sense of the time you spend parenting from a single day’s diary is a bit like trying to measure your income from a single day. If yesterday was payday, you looked rich, but if it’s not, you would be reported as poor. You get a clearer picture only by looking at your income—or your parenting time—over a more meaningful period.
What you did yesterday should not be taken as representative of what you did last year. This is why most high-quality studies of parenting time focus instead on how often parents read to their children, play with them or help them with homework over a period of a month or longer—long enough to represent their different approaches to parenting.
As an exhausted parent who doesn’t get enough time to work out, and who hasn’t seen a movie for months, I understand why so many of us might seize on studies suggesting that we should take more time for ourselves. Perhaps we should. But I agree with Ariel Kalil, a developmental psychologist, on the suggestion “that when parents spend high-quality time with their children, their children are more likely to succeed.”
【1】What do the underlined words “hold water” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. To be valid. B. To be surprising. C. To be confusing. D. To be usual.
【2】What’s the purpose of conducting the study?
A. To explore the link between parenting time and child outcomes.
B. To explore the link between time diaries and child development.
C. To explore the link between children’s habits and parents’ influence.
D. To explore the link between daily activities and children’s problems,
【3】How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A. By giving descriptions. B. By analyzing the cause.
C. By making a comparison. D. By offering research findings.
【4】The author may agree that high-quality-studies of parenting time should ________.
A. be completed in one month B. adopt some different approaches
C. concentrate mainly on learning time D. be based on data of a longer time period
