二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Snowy weather can be beautiful especially when you are inside looking out. When bad weather happens in Canadian cities like Victoria on Vancouver Island, many workplaces close. Necessary places like hospitals must remain open and that’s where the snow angels come in. Almost 100 people volunteer their time to drive hundreds of health workers to their jobs. They are members of the VI Toyota 4×4 group whose vehicles are set up for snow driving with bigger tires(轮胎)that can make them through deeper snow.

The 4×4 group volunteered to drive workers when there was a heavy snow in 2019. Afterwards, they started a Facebook page and that’s where the work rides are coordinated(协调). When a large snowstorm was due to hit earlier in January 2020, the group reached out to Island Health — the publicly funded health care provider — to say that they were ready to spring into action.

The volunteers were really happy to give a helping hand. “While there were no charges for the service, people were donating money for gas and giving us delicious homemade  baked food,” the driver Shelby Newcombe said. “I’ve been running from Sooke all the way  to Saanich Peninsula Hospital and anywhere in between. I’ve been driving all walks of life, from doctors to housekeeping staff, and have met people that I normally wouldn’t have.”

The snow angels say their goal is to make sure that all the patients at Island’s hospitals are taken care of and that’s why they do their part. Having people that are giving back to their communities is part of what makes this Victoria rank in the top twenty of the world’s cities for quality of life even when it snows.

1What do snow angels do in bad weather?

A.They sweep the snow on the roads.

B.They provide food for poor people.

C.They look after the patients in the hospital.

D.They offer free rides to medical workers.

2What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A.The contributions of the volunteers.

B.The great effect of the heavy snow.

C.The reasons for snow angels’ action.

D.The results of starting a Facebook page.

3What can we know from Newcombe’s words?

A.People raised some money for patients.

B.He worked in Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

C.He helped many people with different jobs.

D.People gave homemade baked food to doctors.

4What is the goal of snow angels?

A.To work for communities. B.To attract visitors to Victoria.

C.To improve the quality of life. D.To give support to medical work.

  • 22、My six-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she were seeing me for the first time. “Grandma, you are an antique(古董),” she said. "You are old. Antiques are old. So, you are my antique.”

I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out the dictionary and read the definition(定义)to Jenny. I explained, “An antique is not only old, it's an object from earlier times. a work of art…a piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured," I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary. "They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. An antique is usually at least 100 years old." "I'm only 67," I reminded Jenny.

We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from Rone aunt to another and finally to our family. "It's very old," I told Jenny. “I try to keep it clean and I show it off whenever I can."

There was a picture on the wall bought at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. "Now that's an antique,” I said with pride. "Over 100 years old.” Of course it was marked(留痕迹)up and not in very good condition. "Sometimes age does that," I told Jenny. "But the marks are good marks. They are something to display with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become." I                                 believed this was important for my own self-worth.

Our tour of antiques continued. There was a vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn't buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They'd been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They had survived through years and years.

For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. "I don't have any antiques but you," she said. Then her face brightened. "Could I take you to school for show and tell?"

"Only if I fit into your backpack," I answered. And then Jenny's antique lifted her up and embraced her in a hug that would last through the years.

【1】Grandma read the definition of "antique" to Jenny in order to ________.

A.express her excitement at being called "antique"

B.change Jenny's narrow understanding of antiques

C.tell Jenny the importance of protecting antiques

D.list all the important characteristics of antiques

【2】Which of the following information did grandma express to Jenny?

A.The desk reminded her of her dear relatives.

B.There was usually a sad story behind each antique.

C.The marks on the picture showed its age and value.

D.She planned to buy a new vase to replace the old one.

【3】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Grandma was too old to lift Jenny up.

B.Jenny was too young to know grandma's humor.

C.Jenny had a strong desire for grandma's love.

D.Grandma had a deep long-lasting love for Jenny.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Jenny's Antique

    B.Grandma's Antique

    C.A Collection of Antiques

    D.A Story of Antiques

  • 23、Coming to the end of my assistantship in Barcelona, I start to think about what the future might hold. It’s been seven months and a few days since I arrived here and things have changed so much in what some might call a short period of time.

When I first arrived in Terrassa I was excited and nervous to start a new adventure in a country I love. The first few days seemed so long ago now, trying to find a place to live, organising my timetable with the schools, meeting new people. After a couple of weeks, the excitement started to fade, however, and homesickness started to set in. It wasn’t a powerful homesickness but enough to make me spend more than a few nights thinking about family and friends back home, wondering if I should be there with them.

All that started to change after meeting some new friends and spending good time with them, practising languages, eating together and seeing new places as a group. I suppose we should never forget how important it is to have good people in your life, because they can make such a difference.

Coming back to Terrassa after visiting home for Christmas felt like returning to a second home, to a place that was mine with people I cared about. Things got even more busy and more people came into my life; new friends, romance and a whole lot of good food flowed by in what seems to have been weeks, not months.

Now, looking forward, there are some decisions to make. Should I return home to Scotland and move on with life there or try to extend my time here, perhaps make it something permanent? To travel and visit other places is one of the most meaningful things you can do in life. Experiencing other cultures, learning about the world, it’s such an important thing to do if you have the means. My thought from my experience so far is to travel and try new things whenever getting the opportunity.

【1】What can we learn from paragraph 2?

A.The author made a wrong decision.

B.The author came to Terrassa to find a job.

C.It’s hard for the author to adapt to the life there.

D.The author’s mood changed a lot over time.

【2】What does paragraph 3 focus on?

    A.The importance of making friends.

B.The diversity of characters and cultures.

    C.The variety of people’s life.

D.The necessity of basic learning skills.

【3】What does the author benefit from the experience in Barcelona?

    A.Learning a foreign language is a must.

B.It’s very important to try new things.

C.His own country is always the best.

D.Hard work is the key to success.

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A.How to Make a Great Difference?

B.Ways of fully Changing Your Life

C.What does the Future Hold for Me?

D.A Decision to Work as an Assistant
