二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Everyone wants to be regarded as a reliable person. Being reliable is really necessary when it comes to maintaining(维系)friendships and doing well at work. Read on for ways to be more reliable.

Try not to over-promise. 【1】But it could lead to bad results when you take on too much, and then can't keep it. So next time you are asked to do something, weigh the pros and cons (权衡利弊)and take time before you respond.

【2】If you’re uncertain about hanging out with someone, say so sooner rather than later. Nothing is worse than showing up to meet someone, only to put them off five minutes before they should arrive. Don't be this person. Offer an apology, and cancel the plan well ahead of time.

Don't demand credit. People who demand praise for the things they've done often lose the goodwill that comes from the help they provided. 【3】So there's no need to post it on Facebook or go fishing for praise.

Respect everyone's time. The biggest rule of reliability is to have respect for other people's time. If you tell someone you can meet at a certain time, you've made a promise. 【4】When you're late, you're wasting other people's time at will. And you may therefore give others an impression of being untrustworthy!

Be as truthful as possible. If you failed to finish the work on time, say so. If you don't understand the task, be honest about it. Don't hide or bend the truth and avoid spreading unreliable information. 【5】

    A.Change plans in advance.

B.Hang out with other reliable people.

C.It' s impolite to say "no" to a friend's request.

D.Your friends and co-workers know that you helped out.

E.Being on time shows others that you are a person of your word.

F.Saying "yes” to everything seems to be agreeable and thoughtful.

G.Telling the truth will let people come to see you as a person of reliability.

  • 22、   A recent study finds that the dirt on the ground is likely to worsen climate change. Researchers have shown that warmer temperatures are heating the soil, which is causing microbes (微生物) to become more active and release more of the soil’s carbon into the atmosphere. These soil changes can potentially contribute to even higher temperatures.

Scientists studied device readings, soil measurements, plant growth details and satellite observations from around the world. Their work is the most complete study on the subject.

They found a sharp increase in carbon released into the atmosphere by bacteria and fungi (真菌) in soil from 1990 to 2014. Researchers explain that the carbon comes from the dead plants and leaves the microbes eat. As temperatures rise, the microbes eat more. And the more they eat, the more carbon can be made into carbon dioxide and released into the atmosphere.

This uncontrolled cycle speeds up and intensifies climate change. Overall, soil releases about nine times more carbon than human activities. But that is part of a natural cycle: the amount of carbon released into the air is about equal to the carbon oceans and plants take in.

However, carbon released from fossil fuel causes an imbalance. Burning coal, oil and natural gas puts more carbon into the atmosphere than nature can take in. The additional carbon heats the air and soil. And as the air and soil get hotter, the earth will release more carbon than it has been holding.

If something isn’t done, we are really in trouble. Proper soil conservation can help keep more carbon in soil. Conservation methods include avoiding turning the soil, covering off-season crops and leaving crop deposits on the ground.

1Which word can best describe the scientists’ research data?

    A.Rich. B.Rare.

    C.Limited. D.Difficult.

2What does the underlined word “intensifies” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Causes. B.Demands.

    C.Strengthens. D.Shows.

3What mainly causes the soil’s temperature to rise?

    A.Active bacteria.

    B.Human activities.

    C.The overuses of soil.

    D.The wastes of fossil fuels.

4What can be a suitable title for the passage?

    A.Warmer soil and more carbon.

    B.The soil and the environment.

    C.The microbes and the temperatures.

    D.Hotter air and warmer environment.

  • 23、National Geographic Explorer Malaika Vaz knew from early on that she was destined for adventure. “I was someone who spent a lot of time outdoors,” Vaz says. Among her childhood experiences, she recalls expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, climbing mountains, scuba diving, and windsurfing.

“In my late teens,” Vaz says, “I began to feel like adventure didn’t really mean anything if there wasn’t an intent to protect the natural spaces we were exploring in.” She began to seek an outlet that would both satisfy her desire for adventure and allow her to support the protection of the species and ecosystems.

Vaz had an interest in the medium of film, and decided to pursue a career in wildlife filmmaking. Today Vaz wears many hats in the filmmaking world, as a documentary director, producer, writer, and presenter.

After falling in love with mantas off the coast of her home, she discovered they were being hunted illegally and she dressed herself as a seafood trader to get as close as possible to the issue. She traced traffickers back to many parts of the world to figure out why mantas were being killed. She shares the challenges of going undercover to produce Peng Yu Sai, her Green Oscar-nominated film on the matter.

The subjects that grab her attention, Vaz admits, cover a wide range. And while she’s been asked to define her focus, she prefers variety, and argues that issues she pinpoints are more interrelated than they may appear.

Her work doesn’t stop at recording important stories-she’s also on top of follow-through, ensuring the message is heard. Vaz and her team work with scientists and policy makers to amplify the message of the films they work on.

From Vaz’s perspective, real improvement in the way the planet is cared for lies in the capable hands of many from various backgrounds. “The truth is that we don’t need ten really passionate, committed environmentalists. We need one hundred or one million people who can do a little bit in that field and change things within their ability.”

【1】Which of the following helped Vaz combine adventure with nature protection?

    A.Wildlife film-making.

    B.Free lifestyle.

    C.Childhood experience.

    D.Outdoor activities.

【2】What does the film Peng Yu Sai mention?

    A.Vaz’s home on the coast.

    B.Vaz’s experience of mountain climbing.

    C.The history of Green Oscar.

    D.The illegal hunting of mantas.

【3】What really matters in protecting our planet according to Vaz?

    A.The backgrounds of policy makers.

    B.The influence of films.

    C.The guidance from environmentalists.

    D.The combined efforts of people.

【4】Which of the following best describes Vaz?

    A.Enthusiastic but careless.

    B.Adventurous and insightful.

    C.Knowledgeable but proud.

    D.Humorous and patient.

  • 24、After a fight and before forgiveness often comes an apology. But saying “I'm sorry” comes more easily for some people than it does for others. Character is vital in creating a sincere apology. Those who lack character are not up to the task. They may try to give apologies that sound genuine. They may even use fancy words, but a real apology demands character. A new study suggests that specific personality traits offer clues about whether a person is likely to offer a sincere apology.

Psychologist Andrew Howell and his colleagues at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton devised a questionnaire to measure a person’s willingness to beg someone’s pardon. They asked participants to indicate their level of agreement with a series of statements, such as “My continued anger often gets in the way of me apologizing” or “If I think no one will know what I have done, I am not likely to apologize.” The researchers then used the answers to determine every participant’s “proclivity(倾向))to apologize,” and they cross-referenced these scores with results from a variety of personality assessments.

From the beginning, Howell was confident that people with high marks for compassion and agreeability would be willing apologizers-and the study results confirmed his hypothesis(假设). But the experiment also turned up some surprising traits of the unrepentant(不思悔改的).

People with low self-esteem, for example, are less inclined to apologize, even though they probably feel bad after a conflict. Unlike people who experience guilt about a specific action and feel sorry for the person they have wronged, individuals who experience generalized shame may actually be feeling sorry for themselves.

In contrast, “people who are sure of themselves have the capacity to confess to wrongdoing and address it,” Howell suggests. But just the right amount of self-esteem is key. The study also found that narcissists-people who, in Howell’s words, “are very egocentric, with an overly grand view of themselves”—were reluctant to offer an apology.

The researchers were most surprised to find that a strong sense of justice was negatively correlated with a willingness to apologize, perhaps suggesting that contrition(忏悔)and “an eye for an eye” philosophy are incompatible(不能并存的), Reconciliation(和解)may end a conflict, but it cannot always settle a score.

1What kind of people are more likely to apologize?

    A. Intelligent people.   B. Confident people.

    C. People valuing fairness.   D. People feeling sorry for themselves.

2The underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggests   .

    A. an end of conflict doesn’t mean wrongdoers have been punished

    B. “an eye for an eye” philosophy cannot solve an argument

    C. only by deep regret can one learn the lesson of his wrongdoings

    D. unsatisfactory compromises cannot end a conflict peacefully

3The study done by Andrew Howell and his colleagues reveals   .

    A. what influences one to be a willing apologizer

    B. when people might apologize willingly

    C. what a willing apologizer is all about

    D. how to become a willing apologizer
