二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、All sounds that are louder than 85 decibels are a threat to your hearing, especially if your exposure is long or repeated. That’s because loud sounds can injure or destroy hair cells in your inner ear that are involved in sending sound signals to your brain.

Since most of us don’t carry decibel meters around, you can rely instead on this rule of thumb: if you are required to raise your voice to be heard by someone standing at arm’s length away then there’s potential for harm.

Deafeningly loud noise is not to blame for all hearing loss, though. Occasionally, the root of the problem is an underlying condition such as a ruptured (破裂的) eardrum. In addition, the inner ear can also simply become worse as you get older, and unfortunately, there’s no real way to prevent this.

If you suspect you’ve lost some hearing, see a GP or audiologist. A hearing aid could improve your abilities noticeably, particularly when it’s a question of picking up people’s speech. The technology itself “can take a while to get used to because your brain needs to readjust, “says audiologist Dr Gemma Twitchen. “Research shows this is much easier if you take action on getting your hearing assessed early on, when you first notice it reducing”

Another possible consequence of noise exposure or ageing is tinnitus. This phantom (幽灵似的) ringing, buzzing, hissing or roaring is often caused by the brain compensating for missing sound input or by damaged ear hair cells sending random signals to it. Although the condition affects each sufferer differently, sleep loss, stress and trouble concentrating are among the potential consequences. If your tinnitus comes with hearing loss—and they do often show up together—then a hearing aid could ease it by giving your brain external sounds to focus on. Other potentially helpful devices include sound generators that send out gentle white noise that prevents the tinnitus from developing.

【1】In most cases, how do we know that noise is harmful?

A.By carrying a decibel meter on us.

B.By keeping others at arm’s length.

C.By having to talk loudly at short range.

    D.By sensing concentration trouble.

【2】What is the third paragraph mainly about?

    A.Consequences of loud noise.

    B.Sources of deafening noise.

    C.Ways to prevent hearing loss.

    D.Reasons for hearing loss.

【3】What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A.Most GPs use hearing aids as a cure.

B.This technology has been around for a while.

C.Early hearing loss assessment is advisable

D.Hearing loss takes some time to readjust.

【4】What do we know about tinnitus?

A.It impacts the quality of life.

B.It is a direct result of hearing loss.

C.It can be cured by a hearing aid

D.It leads to missing sound input.

  • 22、When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we’re hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at all-time highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education.

One cost-cutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there’s a question: Would the quality of undergraduate education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a “three-year degree” model.

I doubt that mainstream North American colleges will carry out a three-year curriculum any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits. In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly “throw out” one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist “diluting(稀释)”the quality of the education they offer.

In my opinion, a quality four-year education is always superior to a quality three-year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it’s not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns(实习生)in meaningful part-time jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the five-year co-op program at Northeastern University.

【1】Which of the following can be the best title?

    A. It’s time to shorten the learning process

    B. Best learning takes place over time

    C. University education should be watered down

    D. College education calls for reform

    【2】In most US universities, ________ .

    A. some excellent students can graduate ahead of time

    B. college students are offered the co-op program

    C. electives’ credits make up one quarter of the required credits

    D. all students are required to finish four-year education before graduation

    【3】We can infer that ________ .

    A. the author is a college professor

    B. the author considers the university education quality very important

    C. the author thinks the cost of a university education is too high for people to afford

    D. the author pays special attention to the all-round development of college students

    【4The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________ .

  • 23、On Christmas Eve ─ the night before Christmas Day─ children all over Britain put a stocking at the end of their beds before they go to sleep. Their parents usually tell them that Father Christmas will come during the night.

Father Christmas is very kind and warm-hearted. He gets to the top of each house and climbs down the chimney (烟囱) into the fireplace. He fills each of the stockings with Christmas presents.

Of course, Father Christmas isn't real. In Jim and Kate's house, "Father Christmas" is really Mr Green. Mr Green doesn't climb down the chimney. He waits until the children are asleep. Then he quietly goes into their bedrooms and fills their stockings with small presents. When they were very young, Mr Green sometimes wore a red coat. But he doesn't do that now. The children are no longer young, and they know who "Father Christmas" really is. But they still put their stockings at the end of their beds.

    【1】Christmas Eve is________.

    A.the night of Christmas Day

    B.the evening of Christmas Day

    C.Christmas Day

    D.the night before Christmas Day

    【2】Father Christmas often puts presents________.

    A.into children's hats

    B.into children's stockings

    C.under children's beds

    D.into children's shoes

【3】When the children were very young, ________.

A.they didn't know who Father Christmas was

B.they knew that Father Christmas wasn't real

C.they thought their father was Father Christmas

D.they knew who put the presents into their stockings

【4】When the children are older, they________.

A.know that Father Christmas is real

B.ask their mother to fill their stockings with presents

C.know that Father Christmas is really their father

D.know that Father Christmas is really their friend

  • 24、If you have to attend a party or other social events where a lot of people will be present, do you feel confident that you will make a good impression on others? Or do you feel shy? In any case, you should increase your confidence at social events.

Whenever you are meeting new people at any social event, you should wear proper clothes. Before you attend the event, try to find out how other people will be dressing. If everyone else is wearing business clothes, you should, too. If the event is informal (不拘礼节的), you should wear informal clothes so that you can fit in.

If you are going to meet people from a certain business or profession (行业), try looking through a few professional magazines or checking on the Internet ahead of time to get some conversation ideas that are related to their fields of interest. This can prevent you getting tongue-tied at the event.

When you are at the event, don’t worry about whether or not other people you are talking with like you. Instead, try your best to find reasons to like them. When you are making conversation with people, be sure to keep good eye contact, and make your facial expression soft. Nod to show you’re listening. Let your face and body relax so that you can make natural gestures.

After the event is over, take a bit of time to think of your social performance and the conversation you had with people. Tell yourself exactly what you did very well at the event. For example, perhaps you made a big effort to really listen to the people you were talking with, or you may have asked several people some good questions that really got them talking. By doing so, your conversation confidence will gradually improve.

【1】What should you do before attending a social event?

    A.Practice making natural gestures.

B.Look through a few business magazines.

C.Find out the dressing style of other people.

D.Get as many conversation topics as possible.

【2】What should you avoid at a social event according to paragraph 4?

    A.Keeping eye contact with others.

    B.Wearing informal clothes and shoes.

C.Caring too much about others’ opinions.

D.Nodding now and then to show your interest.

【3】What’s the right thing to do after you come back from a social party?

A.Keep in touch with the people you met.

B.Consider the good job in your performance.

C.Prepare some good questions for next event.

D.Think about how to improve conversation skills.

【4】What’s the best title of the text?

A.How to Take Part in Social Events

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Is Deep-Sea Exploration Worth the Money?

People are generally more enthusiastic about space, but the oceans hold the solutions to some of the biggest problems of the twenty-first century. We must continue to invest in exploration of the deep sea so that we can take advantage of its benefits.

The deep seas contain resources that could bring improvements in the field of medicine. Antibiotics are becoming less effective in the treatment of illnesses, and scientists think that the plant life in the deep oceans may provide a solution. They hope to develop new medicines that will make it possible to fight disease for years to come. Some substances produced from deep-sea plants are already being used in improved medical testing procedures. Recognizing the importance of this research, the 2008 Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry to scientists in this area.

At a time when existing forms of fuel are limited the deep oceans could provide new sources of fuel. For more than 50 years, oil companies have been drilling in areas like the North Sea. Realizing that these offshore resources will not last forever, oil companies are now considering other sources including the huge amounts of oil beneath the ocean bed. However, extracting it safely will require major advancements in technology. Another possible deep-sea fuel source on the ocean floor in the form of ice crystals, scientists believe, could be a fuel source for the future.

Finally, using the deep sea for the disposal of nuclear waste is a controversial issue that needs to be explored further. Some organizations have proposed dropping nuclear waste into the deepest parts of the ocean and sealing it into the ocean floor. Many scientists claim that this process would involve less danger to the environment than current storage methods.

These are just three of the many ways in which leaning about the deep ocean may change our lives for the better. Such advances in our knowledge justify the expense of carrying out deep-sea research. The demand for land is only continuing to grow. The time has come when 70% of our planet covered by water is just too big to ignore.
