二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Along the coast of Cornwall, the UK, by the white beaches near St. Austell, a superhero stands tall. What is this superhero’s weapon of choice? She has two, actually: in one hand, a large recycling bag, and in the other, a heavy-duty litter picker.

Meet Pat Smith, the 71-year-old eco-warrior also known as “Action Granny”. Pat set herself a task to clear the plastic from 52 beaches in Cornwall and Devon. The former teacher jumped into action after watching a film called A Plastic Ocean, which described the range of plastic pollution damaging the world’s oceans and killing sea life.

“It was really life-changing for me,” says Pat. “Until that point, I hadn’t realized there was a problem with plastic in the ocean. I went home from the theater and was really bothered. We have been consuming so much plastic that we are causing an ocean crisis. I said to myself, ‘I’ve got to do something about it.’”

From January 1 until December 31, 2018, Pat cleaned one beach every week. Yet even with the year over and her task completed, she hasn’t stopped. Pat is also picking up litter – and so are her children in the playground. “My daughter-in-law said last week that she had organized a litter-picking activity in the playground with other children. That just shows you that when people are exposed to what you do, they are very likely to follow in your footsteps.”

Joining Pat today is Marta, a research fellow at the Basque Center for Climate Change, who has travelled from Spain to Cornwall to show support for Pat’s action. She also explained her intention of cooperation to Pat. As an environmentalist herself, Marta knows how important it is to work hand in hand, and she would like to show her sincerity.

【1】What made Pat decide to clean beach plastic?

    A.Her title as a superhero.

    B.Her using too much plastic.

C.Her previous job as a teacher.

    D.Her watching A Plastic Ocean.

【2】What do we know about Pat’s litter-picking action?

    A.It needs urgent support.

    B.It has its own limitations.

    C.It’s a time-consuming thing.

D.It is influential among her kids.

【3】Why did Marta go to Cornwall?

A.To ask for support from Pat.

B.To advocate Pat and work together with her.

C.To raise people’s awareness of climate change.

D.To show the importance of protecting the environment.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.A retired teacher’s war on plastic waste

B.The cooperation between Pat and Marta

C.A considerate granny and national superhero

D.A granny’s study on climate change

  • 22、   When it comes to giving help to developing countries, we often think about donating money so that these countries can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies. These seem to be the most important basic needs of the people we are trying to help. However, the traditional way is far from enough. We need better ideas to help them.

Recently, I read about a plan to make cheap laptop computers for children in developing countries. A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which can run without electricity. He decided to invent this computer after he visited a school in Cambodia.

The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is a little different from the normal laptop computers you can buy in the shops. Covered in rubber, this computer is very strong and won’t be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle (把手) so that children can wind () the computer up to give it extra power when needed.

These special laptop computers will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to build as many as 15 million machines in the first year of production. The idea is that these computers will help the children’s education as they will be able to access the Internet.

These computers might not help the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children’s education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.

Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that they can be used again. In the UK, and probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile phones are thrown away every year. The waste created by throwing away these old phones is very bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to recycle them. In this way we will be able to achieve two important goals at the same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others. In other words, we will be able to “kill two birds with one stone”, and that is always a good thing.

1Which of the following words can be best used to describe Nicholas Negroponte?

A.Determined and devoted. B.Independent and successful.

C.Responsible and selfless. D.Creative and caring.

2What can we infer from the passage?

A.The computer invented by Nicholas Negroponte runs without electricity.

B.Recycling old phones is a traditional way to help developing countries.

C.Improving education can help developing countries in the long run.

D.The UK creates most of the waste by throwing mobile phones.

3What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?

A.To introduce some new and better ways to help developing countries.

B.To call on people to help developing countries.

C.To talk about different ways to help developing countries.

D.To tell readers how to help developing countries.

  • 23、Belmont Hotel Manila

    8.6 Excellent

    Based on 6537 reviews.

This is one of the most expensive hotels in Manila as it's near the international airport. My favorite thing about our stay in the hotel was the rooftop view from the top floor of the hotel where the pool was also located. The staff were also very helpful. There's a coffee shop Starbucks on the same building of the hotel and there are a couple of restaurants around the Resorts World area which are easily accessible from the hotel. This hotel turned out to be better than we had expected and it's a great value for your money.

Hyatt Regency Manila City of Dreams

    8.8 Excellent

    Based on 1785 reviews

Overall, we had a great stay at the Hyatt City of Dreams. There was a minor issue with our room and the Assistant Manager handled our concerns and took care of the situation. The customer service was well deserving of five stars. The rooms are new, modern. We have been to the Philippines many times and we will for sure stay here again next time we are in Manila. Amazing food, new rooms and the best customer service experience: TRONGLY RECOMMENDED.

    BSA Twin Tower Ortigas

    7.8 Very good

    Based on 9984 reviews

We were a group of four and we wanted to stay in any hotel in Manila for the long weekend. The suite was not that spacious but we did not really mind considering the price we paid. The room was equipped with all the basic services. Room also came with free Wi-Fi but the connection was lost at around midnight. The kitchen was also helpful as we were able to cook items we bought from the nearby supermarket. Although the room was inexpensive, the hotel charged us extra for services that I believe are free in other hotels.

1Which one is the advantage of Belmont Hotel Manila?

A.The international airport is easy to reach. B.Many restaurants can be found there.

C.It is the most expensive hotel in Manila. D.The customers can enjoy Starbucks free.

3Which of the following hotels is suitable if you want to save money?

A.Belmont Hotel Manila. B.BSA Twin Tower Ortigas.

C.Hyatt Regency Manila City of Dreams. D.Starbucks.

  • 24、   More than one billion young people risk damaging their hearing through the overuse of smartphones and other audio devices, the UN warned Tuesday, proposing new safety standards for safe volume levels.

Currently, about five percent of the global population, or some 466 million people, including 34 million children, suffer from disabling hearing loss. Young people are particularly likely to develop such risky listening habits. Around half of those between the ages of 12 and 35, or 1.1 billion people, are at risk due to “long and severe exposure to loud sounds, including music they listen to through personal audio devices,” the UN health agency said.

In a bid to safeguard hearing, the World Health Organization and International Telecommunications Union issued an international standard for the manufacture and use of audio devices. WHO considers a volume above 85 decibels for eight hours or 100 decibels for 15 minutes as unsafe. The safe listening devices and systems standard calls for a "sound allowance" software to be included in all audio devices, to track the volume level and duration of a user's exposure to sound, and to evaluate the risk posed to their hearing. This system could alert a user if they have dangerous listening habits.

WHO is also calling for parental as well as automatic volume controls on audio devices to prevent dangerous use. While some smartphones and other audio devices already offer some of these features, the UN would like to see a uniform standard used to help protect against disabling hearing loss.

"Think of it like driving on a highway, but without a speedometer in your car or a speed limit," Shelly Chadha of the WHO told reporters in Geneva. "What we've proposed is that your smartphones come fitted with a speedometer, with a measurement system which tells you how much sound you're getting and tells you if you are going over the limit".

1What is the purpose of proposing new safe volume standards?

    A. To warn people of dangerous listening habits.

    B. To help protect against disabling hearing loss.

    C. To promote the development of audio devices.

    D. To prevent the manufacture and use of audio devices.

2Where can you find the data that best supports “young people risk damaging their hearing through the overuse of smartphones”?

    A. In paragraph 2. B. In paragraph 3.

    C. In paragraph 4. D. In paragraph 5.

3What do we know about safe volume levels according to paragraph 3?

    A. It is safe to listen to music under any circumstances.

    B. It is important to keep track of the risk for the users.

    C. It is necessary to have users alerted by their parents.

    D. It is acceptable to keep the volume at 90 decibels for 15 minutes.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A. Turning Down the Volume.

    B. Making Good Use of Smartphones.

    C. The Rise and Fall of Audio Devices.

    D. The Safety Standards for Volume Levels.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea of the passage and how it is illustrated. Use your own words as far as possible.

Brainpower: Use It or Lose It?

Where brainpower is concerned, the old rule of ‘use it, or lose it’ holds true from the start. Babies who receive love and encouragement from their parents develop the neural (神经的)connections they need to get on in life. But what happens to those who fail to get this support?

It would be comforting to believe that such children escape long term damage by being too young to speak, or know any different, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

At a recent meeting of the Royal Society of Medicine, the participants were shown slides taken with a powerful scanner comparing the brains of ‘normal’ three-year-old with those who had been raised in poverty or in orphanages. The work was done by Bruce Perry of the Child Trauma Academy in Houston, Texas. The scans showed that the frontal-temporal areas of the brain, those responsible for personality and enabling a person to display and regulate emotions, showed little activity.

For years it has long been known to scientists that animals brought up in enriched environment have larger and more complex brains than animals that grow up in disadvantaged situations, so experts like Perry assumed that the same would hold true for humans. However, it is only now, thanks to powerful scanners that allow this theory to be put to the test, that the damage is clearly visible. Perry explains the reason for the abnormality is that the brain develops in a ‘use-dependent’ way, growing, organising and working according to experience. With the right stimulation, the brain makes the connections it needs. Without it, synapses (突触), junctions between the neurons used to transport the brain’s messages, actually dissolve. “Negative experiences play a vital role in organising the neural system in the developing brain,” says Perry; in other words, ill-treatment in infancy leads to faulty wiring in the brain.
