二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Growing up in Puerto Rico, our family was no different from so many others. My parents got married after my father came back when the war ended. Both of my parents were struggling with the hard economic realities of the time. But somehow, they found time to cherish those cultural values that shaped our everyday life.

In our daily life, we celebrated together with our friends or family members every birthday, every graduation, and all holidays with music and dancing, and typical foods. When we visited our family in the countryside—a trip that took about two hours in a car, with five children fighting as to who would get a window or the front seat —we would break into song, and somehow the trip would turn into one full of happiness and fun. We would sing not only interesting children’s songs but also beautiful love songs — songs about the love of our country though we didn’t understand the meaning of the words many times.

I came to Philadelphia for the first time in 1973 to do a residency(实习) in family medicine. I remember the many hours of work. I was facing issues of life and death and suffering the clearly social unfairness and issues of poverty and race. These were all worsened by my feeling of cultural differences.

An important turning point in my life happened one Saturday night when I attended a concert of Puerto Rico singer and composer Antonio Caban Vale. The music showed my familiar rhythms, and the words spoke to my heart. I had found a space to express, celebrate, and share my culture in Philadelphia. Therefore, I believe diversity is seen as an advantage and not as a disadvantage. As a Puerto Rican, I am a mixture of races and I believe in my strength because of this.

  • 22、   As one of the world’s most popular cultural mediums, cinema is at the leading position at the Taihu World Cultural Forum(论坛), an annual event that aims to improve cultural exchanges. So far this year, Chinese box office has already topped 58 billion yuan, the China Film Administration said. This indicates that China, the world’s second-largest movie market, is closing the gap with the United States, the world’s top cinema market.

Cao Yin, director of the program center at China Movie Channel, said that China has 67,000 cinema screens. the most of any country, and the number is expected to increase to 80,000 by the end of next year. Saying that China has signed coproduction agreements with 22 countries (including the United States, Canada, Japan. India etc.) ,Cao added it has deepened cinematic exchanges between Chinese filmmakers and their foreign counterparts (同行).

With the country’s huge native market, which produced more than 1,000 films in 2019, Hong Kong director Stanley Tong said he believes foreign filmmakers will increasingly seek cooperation with China. “International coproduction will become an important platform to send Chinese stories oversea and give us a broader vision of creation,” Tong said.

Recently, over 80 percent of the world’s top 100 highest box-office titles have been action films. Tong said the films, in which plots are basically secondary to shining stunts (特技), is one of the easiest ways to appeal to foreign audiences. But it has been a decades-long struggle for Chinese filmmakers to sell their stories overseas. When asked what kinds of Chinese films would have the most global appeal. Yan Zhaozhu, chairman of the Taihu World Cultural Forum, said stories that address universal issues, such as environmental protection and climate change, are perhaps the best options.

1What is the purpose of the Taihu World Cultural Forum?

    A.To strengthen cultural exchanges.

B.To build more cinemas in China.

C.To invite more tourists to Taihu.

    D.To attract more international investment.

2What can we infer about Cao Yin’s opinion in Paragraph 2?

A.Chinese box office has already overtaken the United States so far

B.The screens of Chinese cinemas will be world-leading in the future

C.China has signed the most coproduction agreements with other countries

D.There will be more and more cooperations between Chinese filmmakers and other countries.

3How do Chinese filmmakers feel about selling their movies to the world right now?

    A.Easy. B.Disappointed.

    C.Challenged. D.Confused.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.Box Office: Unclear Future

    B.China: Top Second Movie Market

    C.Cinema: The Leading Cultural Position

    D.Chinese Filmmakers: Severe Competition Situation

  • 23、   What do you call your partner—darling, sweetheart, babe? I have been called a little owl, a swan and even a “panda-fish.” No, I’m not a supernatural, shape-shifting creature or a character in a children’s storybook. I’ve just been in a few relationships where affectionate nicknames appeared as inside jokes.

Plenty of my friends have developed nicknames with their romantic partners. I asked the question on Facebook and got all kinds of answers: former boyfriends who knew each other as “Tiger and Teddy.” An American man who dated a Chinese woman told me he called her “Popo”, which means “wife” or “broken broken,” depending on your intonation and she called him “Benben,” which he says means something like “dumb dumb,” referring to his poor mastery of the Chinese language at the time.

There seems to be a variety of languages with pet names, too. According to the website of the popular language-learning software Rosetta Stone, the French say “Mon Petit Chou” (my little cabbage or cream puff), the Russians say “Vishenka” (cherry), the Dutch call girlfriends “Dropje” (candy) and in Brazil you can say “Meu Chuchu,” where “chuchu” is a vegetable. In Spain I heard the term “Media Naranja,” meaning half-orange, suggesting that the romantic partners are two halves of the whole.

Is there any science behind using pet names? Is it a mark of a healthy relationship, or unhealthy? Are couples who give each other names, ranging from the generic “Honey” and “Sweetie” to the creative “Loopy Lop,” more likely to stay together? And in our digital age, are these nicknames any more important?

From what has been studied, and from the experience of several experts, it seems nicknames can be a good thing for a relationship—if both partners are into it.

【1】Why has the writer been called a little owl, a swan and even a “panda-fish”?

    A.Because he looks like a owl, a swan and even a “panda-fish”.

    B.Because he is a supernatural, shape-shifting creature.

C.Because nicknames arose as inside jokes in his relationships.

    D.Because he loves a character in a children’s storybook.

【2】What did the Chinese woman mean by calling her American boyfriend “Benben”?

A.Her boyfriend had a different intonation.

B.Her boyfriend had a weak mastery of Chinese.

C.She thought the man was very stupid.

D.She thought it was a lovely nickname.

【3】For what purpose do romantic partners in Spain call each other “Media Naranja”?

    A.To introduce half-orange.

B.To show their love for pet names.

C.To mean they are both fat.

D.To suggest they are two halves of the whole.

【4】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?

A.Couples who give each other nicknames are certain to stay together.

B.There must be science behind using pet names.

C.Partners who enjoy their nicknames can keep healthy relationships.

D.Nicknames are no longer important in our digital age.

  • 24、

The count was examining the weapons, when his study door opened, and Baptistin entered, making a sign to him, and went out, closing the door after him.”Who are you, madame?” said the count to the veiled woman ①.

The woman cast one look around her, to be certain that they were quite alone; then bending as if she would have knelt, and joining her hands, she said with an accent of despair, “Edmond, you will not kill my son?” The count retreated a step, uttered a slight exclamation ②.

“What name did you pronounce then, Madame de Morcerf?” said he. “Yours!” cried she, throwing back her veil,” yours, which I alone, perhaps, have not forgotten. Edmond, it is not Madame de Morcerf who is come to you, it is Mercédès.”

Mercédès is dead, madame,” said the count; “I know no one now of that name.”

“Mercédès lives, sir, and she needs not to inquire what hand has dealt the blow which now strikes M.de Morcerf.”

“Fernand, do you mean?” replied the count, with bitter irony; “since we are recalling names, let us remember them all.” the count had pronounced the name of Fernand with such an expression of hatred that Mercédès felt a thrill of horror run through every vein. “You see, Edmond, I am not mistaken, and have cause to say, ‘Spare my son!’”

“And who told you, madame, that I have any hostile intentions against your son?”

“No one, in truth; but a mother has twofold sight. I guessed all; I followed him this evening and have seen all.”

“If you have seen all, madame, you know that the son of Fernand has publicly insulted me,” said the count with awful calmness.

“Oh, for pity’s sake! my son has also guessed who you are, he attributes his father’s misfortunes to you.”

“Madame, you are mistaken, they are not misfortunes, it is a punishment. It is not I who strike M. de Morcerf; it is providence which punishes him.” The count took out a letter with his hands which proved his innocence and Fernand’s sin.

“That is what I heard on leaving my prison fourteen years after I had entered it; and that is why, on account of the living Mercédès and my father, I have sworn to revenge myself on Fernand, andI have revenged myself.”

“And you are sure the unhappy Fernand did that

“I am satisfied, madame, that he did what I have told you; besides, that is not much more odious than that a Frenchman by adoption should pass over to the English; that a Spaniard by birth should have fought against the Spaniards; that a stipendiary of Ali should have betrayed and murdered Ali. Compared with such things, what is the letter you have just reada deception! Well, the French did not avenge themselves on the traitor, the Spaniards did not shoot the traitor, Ali in his tomb left the traitor unpunished; but I, betrayed, sacrificed, buried, have risen from my tomb, by the grace of God, to punish that man, and here I am.” The poor woman’s head and arms fell; her legs bent under her, and she fell on her knees. “Forgive, Edmond, forgive for my sake, who love you still!”

“Not crush that accursed race?” murmured he; “abandon my purpose at the moment of its accomplishment Impossible, madame, impossible!”

“Edmond,” said the poor mother, who tried every means, “when I call you Edmond, why do you not call me Mercédès

“Mercédès!” repeated the count ③, “Mercédès! Well yes, you are right; Mercédès, I have uttered your name with the sigh of melancholy, with the groan of sorrow, with the last effort of despair; I have uttered it, consumed with heat, rolling on the stone floor of my prison. Mercédès, I must revenge myself, for I suffered fourteen years, fourteen years I wept, I cursed; now I tell you, Mercédès, I must revenge myself.”

“Revenge yourself, then, Edmond,” cried the poor mother; “but let your vengeance fall on the culprits,on him, on me, but not on my son!”

“God said that the sins of the fathers shall fall upon their children to the third and fourth generation. Since God himself dictated those words to his prophet, why should I seek to make myself better than God

“Edmond,” continued Mercédès, with her arms extended towards the count, “since I first knew you, I have adored your name, have respected your memory. But I have thought you must be dead! What could I do for you, Edmond, besides pray and weep  Edmond, for ten years I saw every night every detail of that frightful tragedy, and for ten years I heard every night the cry which awoke me, shuddering and cold. And I, too, Edmondoh! believe meguilty as I wasoh, yes, I, too, have suffered much!”

“Have you known what it is to have your father starve to death in your absence” cried the count, ④thrusting his hands into his hair”have you seen the woman you loved giving her hand to your rival, while you were dying

“No,” interrupted Mercédès, “but I have seen him whom I loved on the point of murdering my son.” Mercédès uttered these words with such deep anguish, with an accent of such intense despair, that the count could not restrain a sob. The lion was daunted; the avenger was conquered.
