  • 21、Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if you are 12 years old. But Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.

“The top winners have exhibited boundless curiosity,” Maya Ajmera president and CEO of Society for Science, said in the press release. “Their remarkable research not only reflects their talent but also paves the way for an exciting new future.”

Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors. and yet it still burned down,” she added.

After she studied fire statistics, Shaya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal (热的) imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.

With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype(原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the programming, “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed. It was a really big challenge I had to go through.” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.

“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage with all young people,” said Ajmera. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.

【1】What can we learn about Shanya from the first two paragraphs?

A.She gained a lot of money in the award.

B.She showed a curious nature as a schooler.

C.She set a big stage for young people her age.

D.She was junior to other winners in performance.

【2】What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system?

A.Her desire to win the science award.

B.Her experience of a destructive fire.

    C.Her interest in computer programming.

D.Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.

【3】What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?

A.It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.

B.It can send out a warning against a potential fire.

C.It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.

D.It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.

【4】Which of the following can best describe Shanya?

    A.Reliable.

    B.Cooperative.

    C.Innovative.

    D.Generous.

  • 22、When people ask me how I started writing, I find myself describing an urgent need that I felt to work with language. Having said that, I did not know for a long time what I was looking for. It was not until I followed this feeling to its source that I discovered I had a passion for writing. With some encouragement from my colleagues, I had one of my poems published. This bit of success, however, was the point where my problem began.

Back in 1978, I had to travel between three different campuses in the morning, teaching freshman composition. Afternoons I spent taking my daughter to her ballet and horse-riding lessons. I composed my lectures on the way, and that was all the thinking time I had. When I returned home, there was not enough of me left for writing after a full working day.

As a way out, I decided to get up two hours before my usual time. My alarm was set for 5:00 A.M. The first day I shut it off because I had placed it within arm's reach. The second day I set two clocks, one on my night table, and one out in the hallway. I had to jump out of bed and run to silence it before my family was awoken. This was when my morning writing began.

Since that first morning in 1978, I have been following the habit to this day, not making or accepting many excuses for not writing. I wrote my poems in this manner for nearly ten years before my first book was published. When I decided to write a novel, I divided my two hours: the first for poetry, the second for fiction. Well or badly, I wrote at least two pages a day. This is how my novel, The Line of the Sun. was finished. If I had waited to have the time, I would still be waiting to write my novel.

What I got out of getting up in the dark to work is the feeling that I am in control. For many people, the initial sense of urgency to create easily dies away because it requires making the tough decision: taking the time to create, stealing it from yourself if ifs the only way.

  • 24、Children are excited to find brightly wrapped(包装的) presents under the tree on Christmas morning. They can’t wait to open the wrapping and get the toys that were on their wish lists such as toy cars. But after the excitement wears off, those toys are usually left to the corner of the toy box and the kids are searching for something else to do. But it doesn't have to be that way.

A study from the University of Toronto found that giving your child experiences as a gift, instead of toys, improves your child’s intelligence and makes stronger parent-child bonds. “Often the focus is only on whether someone likes a gift rather than focusing on a main purpose of gift giving. Knowing that will foster(培养) relationships between the giver and the receiver,” said lead researcher Cindy Chan.

Chan suggested that when you are buying a holiday gift or birthday gift, you should buy something that kids can experience with you. This can be movie or concert tickets, a CD from a performance you already saw to keep the memory alive. For example, for Kids, a trip to a museum, going ice-skating or a book that the family can read together over and over again are valuable gifts.

It is found that giving your kids too many toys can be counterproductive(适得其反) and make kids at a loss. The best way to make kids happy is to spend time together.

So, if you want happy and intelligent kids, spending time with them and making memories are the best you can give them. That's not to say that there shouldn’t be any toys but change the focus from getting things to making lasting memories.

【1】How do children usually deal with toys after the excitement disappear?

    A.They put them aside.

B.They give them to their friends.

C.They add them to the wish lists.

D.They throw them into the rubbish bin.

【2】What should people focus on when buying gifts according to Cindy Chan?

    A.The advantage of giving toys.

    B.The purpose of giving gifts.

    C.The excitement caused by toys.

    D.The gift receiver's hobby.

【3】What did Cindy Chan advise parents to do in Paragraph 3?

    A.Do something together with kids.

    B.Give kids wel1-wrapped presents.

C.Buy kids as many toys as possible
