二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Most young architects—particularly those in big cities—can only dream about working in a building of their own. And making that dream come true often means finding a building no one else seems to want, which is exactly what happened to David Yocum and his partner, Brian Bell. Their building is a former automobile electrical-parts firm in Atlanta. From the outside, it looks too old, even something horrible, but open the door and you are in a wide, open courtyard, lined on three sides with rusting walls.

In 2000,Yocum and Bell found this building in the city’s West End. Built in 1947, the structure had been abandoned years earlier and the roof of the main building had fallen down. But the price was right, so Yocum bought it. He spent eight months of his off-hours on demolition, pulling rubbish out through the roof, because it was too dangerous to go inside the building. The demolition was hard work, but it gave him time to think about what he wanted to do, and “to treasure what was there—the walls, the rust, the light, Yocum said. Every season, more paint falls off the walls and more rust develops. Its like an art installation(装置) in therea slow-motion show.

Since the back building had been constructed without windows, an all-glass front was added to the building to give it a view of the courtyard, and skylights were installed in the roof. The back of the building is a working area and a living room for Yocum and his wife. A sort of buffer(缓冲) zone between the front and the back contains a bathroom, a kitchen and a mechanical room, and the walls that separate these zones have openings that allow views through to the front of the studio and the courtyard beyond.

Yocum and Bell, who have just completed an art gallery for the city, feel that the experience from the decoration of their building, focusing on the inside rather than the outside, has influenced their work. It has also given these architects a chance to show how they can make more out of less.

【1】According to the passage, it is_________ for most young architects in big cities to work in a building of their own.

    A. unrealistic B. easy

    C. unnecessary D. common

【2】Working on the old building, Yocum and Bell_______.

    A. removed the skylights from the bathroom

    B. presented a slow-motion show in an art gallery

    C. pulled rubbish out through the roof

    D. built a kitchen at the back part of the old building

【3】It can be inferred from the passage that Yocum and Bell ________.

    A. benefited a lot from pulling down the roof

    B. turned more old buildings into art galleries

    C. paid more attention to the outside of the art gallery

    D. got inspiration from decorating their old building

【4】The main idea of the passage is that_________.

    A. creative people can make the best of what they have

    B. people can learn a lot from their failures

    C. it is worthwhile to spend money on an old building

    D. people should not judge things by their appearance

  • 22、We've heard many stories of individuals across the world who've adopted a zero-waste lifestyle, but it's not often that we come across an entire community trying to become waste-free. The residents (居民) of Kamikatsu in Japan take recycling so seriously that they actually hope to become the nation's first zero-waste community by 2020.

Kamikatsu has no garbage trucks, so residents need to compost (制成堆肥) their kitchen trash at home. They also have to wash and sort the rest of their trash into 34 different kinds, and bring it to the recycling center themselves where workers make sure the waste goes into the correct bins. It obviously took some time for the residents to get used to this rule, but they eventually managed to adapt to the strict changes and they are now seeing them as normal.

Kamikatsu has turned recycling into a new process — there are separate bins for different types of paper products. Even plastic bottles and their caps go into different bins. Many of these items are resold or repurposed (赋子新的用途) into clothing and toys. The labels on each bin let the residents know exactly what happens to their trash.

Reuse is highly encouraged in Kamikatsu — they have local kuru-kuru shops where residents can exchange used items with new things at no extra cost. Businesses are also encouraged to participate in responsible waste management.

A Kamikatsu resident said, “It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea. Now I don't think about it. It's become natural to separate the trash correctly.”

All the recycling facilities in Kamikatsu are managed by a Zero Waste Academy which also regularly hosts groups of local schoolchildren and foreign visitors, educating them on the benefits of a zero-waste lifestyle.

【1】How do the residents of Kamikatsu deal with their trash?

A.They throw it into garbage trucks.

B.They recycle all their trash at home.

C.They send it to the recycling center on their own.

D.They turn all trash into compost beneficial to the soil.

【2】What's the feature of recycling in Kamikatsu?

    A.Trash is classified carefully.

B.Bins tell the residents details of their trash.

C.Used items are changed for new ones at lower price.

D.Recycled items are reused by the residents themselves.

【3】What can we infer from the resident mentioned in paragraph 5?

A.He feels painful to deal with trash.

B.He accepts the zero-waste community plan.

C.He advises the Japanese to follow their example.

D.He regards separating the trash as a waste of time.

【4】What is the main purpose of the text?

A.To tell us what happens to trash.

B.To ask people to protect the environment.

C.To introduce an inspiring waste-free community.

D.To recommend people to compost kitchen trash.

  • 23、   I took a motor rickshaw to the train station in the city of Belapur. The driver didn't speak much English, but understood, "Belapur Railway Station. ” I had my tabla, a traditional drum from India, my suitcase with my clothes and other essentials. The feeling of flying by cars in this little machine is : as if you are inside a box with tiny wheels, dashing through disorderly traffic.

I arrived at the station safely, and took a heavy breath as I unloaded my baggage before the ticket office. It was the first time that I had taken a local train to Tilak Nagar, where I was going to learn traditional vocal music. Standing in line, I counted at least 20 people staring at me. I bought my ticket, which was only 55 cents for a 20-minute train ride. The prices still blow me away.

When the train came after 15 minutes or so, I got on with all speed, as the train only stops for a few seconds. The locals again stared at me. This was a train especially for local transport. After a while, a young man asked me if he could talk to me. He wanted to know if I was in a band. I stated no, but I love to play tabla. Through the conversation I knew he was a student of engineering with his exams being tomorrow, I wished him good luck for the exams sincerely, as I knew what it means to Indian students to get good marks on their exams. If students do not get good enough scores, job opportunities will be few in a highly-competitive environment.

The student I met helped me unload my luggage as the train reached Tilak Nagar Station. He shook my hand strongly and looked into my eyes with marks of genuine care and friendship, despite us meeting for only 20 minutes.

As I was driving to the airport last week the odometer(里程表) on my truck rotated to 100,000 kilometers. This led me to pause and think about selling the truck and buying a new one, but it also made me think about all the life I’d lived in this truck, and how my bulldog had accompanied me in it, leaving me hesitating about selling it.

When I returned to Canada after nine years overseas, what better way could I fit in with and immerse in rural culture than by buying a pickup?

The day I rolled out of the dealer(经销商) and hit the first gravel road(碎石马路) in my Toyota Tacoma was exciting, until I got very nervous as rocks hit my new purchase. But all that quickly evaporated when I received my first call through the truck’s Bluetooth phone. It was the doctor, to say that my Dad was hospitalized in a remote location. I immediately followed the truck’s GPS and got there quickly and safely. I was with Dad for his last two days. And so the first memories of my truck are images carved in my heart.

As the kilometers of my life rolled on, Lyon, my bulldog who came back to Canada with me from France, claimed the back seat as an area belonging only to her. It didn’t matter how short or long the trip was, she stared at me in the review mirror all the time. Most often, I would arrive at our destination and Lyon would stay in the back seat, bathed in the sun with the door open, knowing I would return. There was an overwhelming sense of comfort between us in that truck.

In the early days of truck ownership, I panicked at how dirty it became and any dent(凹痕) it put on. I soon realized, though, that it was part of the truck’s character. Now I look at every dent and recall the story or adventure that put them there. I began to see it as character-building, much like wrinkles appearing on my face. The truck was simply aging gracefully and began, like humans, to display its experience and wisdom.

    Paragraph 1:

I don’t think a vehicle is just for travelling from place to place.
