  • 22、Because I will be away for a few days after Spring Break, I am writing this during the actual holiday, when I can use time to catch up on a number of purely administrative (管理的) items.

First of all, you should have received the letter I sent out on April 2 advising of the transition (过渡) arrangements to new leadership at ISM (International School of Moscow). In that letter I pointed out that Dr. Paul Malone will be arriving in Moscow on Monday, May 4th, and that I will work with him during that week to ensure smooth transition. My last day at ISM will be Friday, May 8th.

Several people have asked me why I required Dr. Malone to come early. There are many problems facing ISM at the moment which have major implications (影响) for the future, and it makes sense for the new director to come aboard before the end of the school year. This will give him the chance to play a major role in the planning process for 2014—2015 and beyond. The fact that Paul Malone is able to arrive in early May is good for the school. I have been working closely with him, and will do everything possible to see that he can move in easily when I leave. From here I will go to Hong Kong for a couple of weeks to spend time in my new situation, and then I will return to the United States for a few weeks’ vacation.

In the most recent edition of the Compass(a kind of paper of ISM), I wrote briefly what I consider to be the major challenge for ISM in the future. I am sure that the new leadership of the school will be able to face those challenges in an active manner, which will ensure a strong future for the school. I shall certainly watch the progress of the school with interest. The results of the school for the past few years have been quite outstanding, and I fully expect that level of performance to continue.

【1】 We can infer from the text that the writer was the ________ of ISM.

    A. director B. employee

    C. teacher   D. student

【2】 Why should Dr. Malone come to ISM early?

    A. To work closely with the author.

    B. To do everything possible for the school.

    C. To move in easily when the author returns.

    D. To work with the author for a few days and make a future plan.

【3】 From the text, we learn that ________.

    A. Paul Malone is a capable man

    B. the writer is a best friend of Paul Malone’s

    C. Paul Malone will work with the writer for several years

    D. the writer will do his best to help Paul Malone to work well at ISM

  • 23、During our research for this sequence, we had been told we shouldn’t even bother trying to film the Pallas’s cat in winter. Filming such an animal was said to be near impossible. We wouldn’t be able to find such a small animal in the vast steppes of Mongolia. Besides this, they’re known to be easily frightened and extremely cautious. But we wanted to surprise audiences by showing them frozen worlds that lay outside of the Poles.

Arriving in Mongolia, I was struck by its vastness. It’s unbelievable that our first day presented us with a good view of our hard-to-find target. Our guide led us to the top of a hill. More than a kilometre away in an unimpressive pile of rocks, I could see a tiny spot, a Pallas’s cat! We were so excited!

We had been blessed with extremely low daytime temperature. Pallas’s cats have the densest coat of any cat, but even so they must save their energy as much as possible. Their movements at these temperatures were especially seldom. While conditions did not look promising, we still needed to see if we could actually film them.

The cats would only appear if the sun was out. But the steppe could be hit at any time by fast and bitter winds which would make any animal that had decided to appear come to an end. The decision as to whether to hold out for the weather to pass or to have a rest was always a painful one to make.

But as the weeks went on and we spent more time with the cats, it was astonishing to see just how it was that they were able to survive in such a difficult and unpleasant environment. The longer we spent with them, the more we found ourselves falling in love with these attractive little characters and their winter lives.

【1】Why do people think it’s unlikely to film the cats?

    A.The action is illegal.

    B.The steppes are not large.

    C.The cats are extremely careful.

    D.The cat number is small.

【2】How did the author feel when the steppes came into sight?

    A.Amazed.

    B.Excited.

    C.Anxious.

    D.Upset.

【3】What can we infer from paragraph 3 and 4?

    A.We suffered low temperatures.

B.The Pallas’s cats love the sun.

C.The decisions are hard to make.

    D.The filming condition is challenging.

【4】What would be the best title of the text?

    A.Palla’s Cats-An Unusual Animal

B.Experience of Filming the Palla’s Cats

    C.Survival Skills on Mongolia Steppes

    D.Extreme Weather outside the Poles

  • 24、For the first time in 100 years, the endangered California condor (秃鹰) will return to the Pacific Northwest. As the largest lying land bird, the California condor was once in a difficult situation of extinction, but now has made noticeable steps towards recovery.

California condors prehistorically lived from California to Florida. By the mid-20th century, condor population had decreased due to illegal hunting. In 1967, the California condor was listed as endangered with a population of 50 to 60. Fifteen years later, only 23 condors survived worldwide. By 1987, all remaining wild condors had been placed into a breeding program. Thus, a recovery program began. As a result of excellent reintroduction efforts, there are now over 300 California condors in the wild in America.

The return of condors to the skies is a key step towards the recovery of the beautiful scenery. These creatures are essential members of their ecosystems and play a very important role in the cultural beliefs of the Yurok Tribe. Because condors have an irreplaceable place in their culture, the Yurok Tribe has led this reintroduction effort and completed a great deal of work over the past twelve years.

Recently, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Park Service, and the Yurok Tribe came together to announce a final rule. This rule will help to facilitate the creation of a new California condor release place for the reintroduction of condors to Yurok Ancestral Territory and Redwood National and State Parks. Considering the date of the completion of the condor release place may be ahead of schedule, the actual release of condors would be spring of 2022.

Steve Mietz, head of Redwood National and State Parks said, "We will continue to work with our partners in condor recovery. Tourists can visit the tallest trees in our parks while watching the largest birds in the world fly overhead."

【1】What happened to California condors in the 20th century?

    A.Their population decreased.

B.They were listed as rare animals.

    C.They changed their habitats.

D.There were only 23 condors in California.

【2】Why does the Yurok Tribe make efforts to recover condors?

A.Condors are a key part of beautiful scenery.

B.Condors play an essential role in their culture.

C.They rely on condors to study the ecosystem.

D.Condors are the tribe's main income source.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

We don’t choose our siblings the way we choose our partners and friends. Of course, we don’t choose our parents either, but they usually make that up to us by accompanying us on the way to adulthood. Brothers and sisters are just sort of there. And yet, when it comes to our development, they can be more influential than parents.

Whether these relationships make our life better or worse is a more complicated question. On the upside, positive interactions with siblings during adolescence foster empathy, prosocial behavior, and academic achievement. However, when a sibling relationship is bad, it can be really bad. Tense sibling relationships make people more likely to be depressed and anxious in adolescence. Moreover, sibling bullying makes a kid involved in self-harm as a teen and develop mental problems in adulthood.

Whether a person models himself after his siblings or tries to distinguish himself has particularly important consequences. One study found that siblings who felt positive about each other tended to achieve similar education levels while those who spent unequal time with their dad and got unequal parental treatment had different educational fortunes. That difference is changeable. On the other hand, following your sibling can be a mistake: teenagers are more likely to be involved in risky behavior if an older sibling did so first.

One way or another, sibling influence is lasting. A study of more than one million Swedes found that one’s risk of dying of a heart attack multiplies after a sibling dies of one, due not only to shared DNA but also to the stress of losing such a key figure. The findings make sense: Most of us are different people than we’d have been if our brothers or sisters were never born.
