二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Let’s begin with the story: King Hiero contracts the ancient Greek polymath Archimedes (阿基米德) to detect fraud in the manufacture of a golden crown. Archimedes accepts the challenge and, during a subsequent trip to the public baths, realizes that the more his body sinks into the water, the more water is displaced — making the displaced water an exact measure of his volume.

Realizing he has hit upon a method to determine whether the King’s crown was made of gold or silver, the young Greek leaps out of the bath and rushes home naked crying “Eureka! Eureka!” Or, translated: “I’ve found it! I’ve found it!”

Too bad, however, Archimedes probably never uttered the phrase in that way.

First and foremost, Archimedes himself never wrote about this episode, although he spent plenty of time detailing the laws of buoyancy (浮力). The oldest authority for the naked-Archimedes eureka story is Vitruvius, a Roman writer, who included the tale in his introduction to his ninth book of architecture. “Vitruvius may have gotten it wrong,” says Chris Schmitt, a mathematician at the University of Berlin and a self-described Archimedes fan. “The method attributed to Archimedes in the story works in theory so it sounds right, but when you actually try it, you find that the real world gets in the way.”

In fact, Schmitt is one of a long line of scientists, including Galileo, who have read the account and thought, “That can’t be right.” As Galileo wrote, Archimedes could have achieved a far more precise result using his own law of buoyancy and an accurate scale. In fact, the surface tension of water can make the volume of a light object like a crown immeasurable. “There may be some truth to it,” Schmitt adds. “Archimedes did measure the volume of things but the eureka moment was maybe due to his original discovery concerning buoyance, not to sitting in the bathtub and then running through the streets naked.”

Much like Newton’s apple, the exclamation persists because of the enduring power of the story: a golden crown, a life in the balance, a naked mathematician. The suspect foundations of the eureka moment take nothing away from the word’s ability to uniquely and concisely convey the flash of inspiration.

1According to the first paragraph, how would Archimedes measure the volume of the crown?

A.He would weigh himself with and without the crown.

B.He would weigh the crown first and then put it into water.

C.He would go to the public baths wearing the crown on his head.

D.He would sink the crown into water and measure the water displaced.

2What did Galileo probably think of the naked-Archimedes eureka story?

A.He believed the word “eureka” was said in another situation.

B.He suspected Archimedes didn’t run through the street naked.

C.He doubted Archimedes carried out the experiment independently.

D.He thought Archimedes would not have used the method described.

3What can be inferred from the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?

A.The word “eureka” is still widely used today.

B.The word “eureka” is now a formal scientific term.

C.Most people accept the authenticity of the original story.

D.People are still inspired by the achievements of Archimedes.

4What is the purpose of this text?

A.To introduce the famous scientist Archimedes.

B.To examine the credibility of the eureka story.

C.To explain how the word “eureka” was created.

D.To urge people not to use the word “eureka” anymore.

  • 22、   You’ve got the butter, the eggs, the organic salad greens and the laundry soap. And so you make your way to the front of the grocery store, which is where you’ll face your moment of truth:

Will you step in behind the mom with a wiggly baby and a full cart? Or take your chances with the young couple you spotted arguing over the best milk in Aisle 3B?

Better make up your mind, quick. Because, faster than the guy with “just one item” who’s about to cut in line, this whole scene is going to disappear.

Amazon recently opened its own convenience store, Amazon Go, in Seattle. It’s the first of its kind: a truly cashless grocery experience in which shoppers enter through gates that look like subway turnstiles (闸机), take what they want from the shelves and exit the way they came. No carts, no lines, no waiting. The store accurately lists what you take and charges your Amazon account, efficiently delivering an electronic receipt after you’ve left. Like most things that Amazon does, this smells like inevitability. We know, as surely as we knew the day that first Amazon box showed up on the doorstep, that the future of shopping has arrived.

Like all progress, it comes at a cost. “Based on data”, says Manoj Thomas, a professor of marketing at Cornell University, “we know that when people use any abstract form of payment, they spend more. And the type of products they choose changes too.”

Decades of psychological research has reinforced the knowledge that the further we are removed from “the pain of paying,” the less we understand how much were really spending. “If you are paying by credit card,” says Thomas, “you might pause at the checkout and suddenly think,” Should I be buying this? “Or if you are paying cash, that reflection happens at the very beginning. Both will be gone with the Amazon store.” Unhealthy impulse purchases and overspending will result from it, he says. “Both are completely related because they are influenced by our impulse urges.”

Win Is Thomas advocating that we all make a run for the atm and attempt to turn back time by using old hard currency? “No, no, no,” he says.

He envisions a world in which you’ll be able to set budget or calorie limits on an app that will recognize when you pick up unhealthy or budget-busting items and will warn you that they fall outside your goals. He expresses confidence that there is some tech hero out there right now, figuring out this exact solution to keep us all on the straight and narrow.

1What does the underlined phrase “this whole scene” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Customers arguing over the best item. B.Customers lining up at the checkout.

C.Customers cutting in line for the bargains. D.Customers doing shopping with their babies.

2What might you experience if you do shopping in Amazon Go?

A.Less “pain of paying” at the checkout counter.

    B.Convenient entering through subway turnstiles.

C.Overspending on more than you actually need.

D.Quicker delivering of goods to your car.

3Manoj Thomas probably holds the view that ________.

A.abstract payment contributes to market prosperity

B.impulse consumption may be regulated with the new app

C.extra spending will surely not happen with the warning of the app

D.it is better for people to use cash or credit cards to avoid overspending

  • 23、   Have you ever felt so tired after staying up for a night that even coffee doesn't give you the energy that you need? You may have an energy drink, but the benefits of drinking one arc heavily outweighed by the risks.

In the past years, more and more studies have found the deadly effects of energy drinks on our bodies. The sugar, caffeine and energy supplements (补充)in energy drinks make up a deadly mixture of ingredients that can affect your heart function and send you to the hospital!

A study by the University of Bonn, Germany found that frequent consumption of energy drinks can greatly change the way our heart functions. The study went on to say that consuming energy drinks often causes significantly increased heart contractions in adults, which has the potential of putting you at risk for irregular heartbeats.

It is possible that many people are unconscious of the alarming side effects of energy drinks because of the way they are labelled. Most energy drinks contain between 80 milligrams to over 350 milligrams of caffeine, sugar and energy supplements. When an energy drink is marketed as a diet supplement, it may be distributed without a "nutrition facts" label, which would show the harmful supplements that are in the drink. However, even if energy drinks are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, they don’t have to show the number of supplements.

Energy drinks may be widely available but they aren't the healthiest or safest choice for your body. To stay naturally energized, get organized and stay on top of your work so that you aren't having to stay up all night to complete assigned tasks. If you'd like a natural energy boost, you could make time for a short workout, which will give you all of the energy you need!

1Which of the following is the side effect of the energy drinks?

    A.Making people thinner.

    B.Making people's heart bigger.

C.Making people run a risk of falling ill.

D.Making people suffer from heart attack.

2Why are many people unaware of the harmful effects of energy drinks?

A.Because they don't read the label carefully.

B.Because FDA thinks they are healthy drinks.

C.Because the harmful materials are not labelled.

D.Because factories of energy drinks lie to drinkers.

3What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.The benefits of doing exercise.

B.The better choice of right drinks.

C.The way to have enough energy.

    D.The effects of energy drinks.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.Don't Drink Energy Drinks

    B.Many People Enjoy Energy Drinks

    C.The Materials Energy Drinks Contain

D.Energy Drinks Could Send You to Hospital

  • 24、Worrying new figures from a national survey conducted by Kingswim have revealed 51 percent of Australian adults can’t swim 50 metres or more without stopping. However, the news is better for our kids, with statistics showing that childhood swimming lessons are paying off.

“These statistics are reflected in the Royal Life Saving 2018 Drowning Report, with 32 percent of drowning deaths occurring in the 55+ age range compared to 19 percent for under 25s,” says Kingswim Marketing Manager. Rowena Thomasson.“While these are terrible statistics it’s not all sad news; the survey revealed younger demographics(群体) had a much higher swimming ability, which correlated with the swimming lessons they received as children.”

Kidsafe Victoria CEO Melanie Courtney says that swimming lessons are a critical part of comprehensive home pool safety defence. “Children can drown quickly and silently in just a few centimeters of water. Swimming lessons, together with active adult supervision—both in and around water—first aid knowledge and a well-maintained pool barrier are critical elements in keeping your family safe over the coming summer season.”

Mum of three, Jenny Ong says she knows all too well the anxiety caused by not being able to swim as an adult. “Neither my partner or I am confident in the water so teaching our girls to swim was always going to be difficult for us,” she says. “I won’t swim anywhere, I can’t touch the bottom and I don’t want my children to feel the same uneasiness in the water. My eldest two now both take regular lessons which they absolutely love and I’m relieved to know they’re mastering a lifesaving skill.”

The research proved that children with professional swimming lessons to subsidise any lessons at home were much more confident in their ability to swim as an adult. “Close to half of people aged between 18 and 24 say they had swimming lessons through three or more channels, with 84 percent believing they received adequate swimming lessons as a child — demonstrating how crucial it is for children to receive professional swimming lessons in addition to anything taught at home,” says Thomasson.

【3】What’s Jenny Ong’s attitude towards her kids’ lessons?

    A.Anxious.

    B.Favorable.
