  • 22、Today, we will get you started with the basics to help your houseplants live their best life.

    Find your light

【1】 Different light levels are described as low, medium and bright. If you’re wondering what light level you have in your home, here’s a quick test: Hold your hand about a foot above where you want to put your plant. If it casts a shadow with clear lines, you’re working with bright light. If the lines of your hand look a little fuzzy (模糊), that’s medium light. 【2】 Overall, most houseplants are going to do well in medium or bright indirect light.

    Pick a pot

When you bring a new plant home, it is much better to let it settle in the original pot. Over time, you might notice roots growing out of that drainage (排水) holes. 【3】. When you are upsizing your pot, a good rule is to increase the diameter (半径) by 2 inches each time. In addition, make sure the new container has a drainage hole in the bottom. Proper drainage is important. Otherwise, their roots will rot.

    【4】

Overwatering is one of the most common ways people kill their houseplants. So, how do you know when to give it a drink?

One of the simplest ways is the finger test. Stick your finger a few inches into the soil and feel if it’s still wet different houseplants have different needs, but a general guideline is to water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.

Never stick to “Every Sunday I water my plants”. 【5】

    A.Water your plant properly.

    B.Check the roots occasionally.

C.Low light is just enough light for you to read a book.

D.It should be whenever the soil itself needs to be watered.

E.Then it is time to find a bigger pot so its roots can expand.

F.The first thing you need to do is figure out the type of lighting you have.

G.Such measures will invite them to stay longer and help the plants grow better.

  • 23、Creativity Improves Your Health

Creativity helps us create works of beauty, solve problems, and refresh our bodies and our minds. It’s fun. When you are having fun, you are positively impacting your health. Studies show that engaging in creative behaviors improves brain function, mental health and physical health.

You’ve probably heard of flow — it’s the state you get in when you’re completely absorbed in something. Have you ever been working on a project and completely lost all sense of self and time? That’s flow. It reduces anxiety, boosts your mood, and even slows your heart rate.

It’s not just being in flow that makes you happy. Repetitive creative motions like knitting, drawing, or writing help activate flow, and are all tasks that create a result. When you succeed in creating a result, your brain is flooded with dopamine, a natural anti-depressant that actually helps motivate you, whether or not you’re aware of your increased happiness.

Creativity is also an effective treatment for patients with dementia — a serious illness of the mind. Studies show that creative engagement not only reduces depression and isolation, but can also help people with dementia by sharpening their senses.

The average person has about 60,000 thoughts in a day. A creative act such as crafting can help focus the mind, and has even been compared to meditation due to its calming effects on the brain and body. Even just gardening or sewing releases dopamine.

Creativity reduces anxiety, depression and stress. Studies have found that writing helps people manage their negative emotions in a productive way, and painting or drawing helps people express their mental injury or hurtful experiences that they find too difficult to put into words.

Studies show people who write about their experiences daily actually have stronger immune system function. Writing, a creative work, increases your CD4+ lymphocyte count, the key to your immune system.

Playing music can also function well in your immune system. Studies show that our left brain is responsible for the motor functions, while our right brain focuses on melody. When the two parts work together, our cognitive function improves.

It’s pretty amazing that doing the activities is good for us. Get a pen and start writing or coloring. Get your hands dirty with pottery or gardening or pick up an instrument. Whatever you decide to do, it’s time to start getting creative!

【1】Which situation shows that you are in flow?

A.You are working with a difficult task.

B.You are having a boring repetitive action.

C.You get lost and don’t know where to go.

D.You are absorbed in a work that interests you.

【2】The underlined word “dopamine” in Paragraph 3 is probably ________.

A.an awareness of how to be successful

B.a thought having calming effects on the brain

C.an activity to fight against your negative emotions

D.a material for the functioning of the nervous system

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Repetitive actions can cure patients with mental diseases.

B.Creative activities help you build a stronger immune system.

C.Meditation makes your anxiety, depression and stress disappear.

D.Telling others your hurtful experiences helps improve your health.

  • 24、   Deep in the middle of Sri Lanka, a massive column of rock reaches out from the green tropical forest. It is 660 feet tall and features frescoes (壁画), graffiti, and landscaped gardens.

The rock is known as Sigiriya and holds a special place in the island's cultural history.

It was established as the stronghold of a king over 1,500 years ago, and today the Sigiriya complex stands as one of the earliest preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

Located in the Central Province, the column of rock is somewhat central to the country. The rock is known as Sihagiri, meaning "Lion Rock", a nod to the giant animal carved from stone which greeted visitors at the entrance.

In 476 BC. King Dhatusena ruled over Sri Lanka. One of his illegal sons, Kashyapa, wanted the throne (王位). Kashyapa overthrew Dhatusena and drove his brother Moggallana to Southern India. Kashyapa crowned himself king in 477 BC.

King Kashyapa chose Sigiriya as his palace because its position was an advantage to the defensive stronghold, offering fantastic 360-degree views. Plans to build a city quickly unfolded and after several years, the Sigiriya complex had become a business center for the new King.

Sigiriya was both a palace and a fortress (堡垒); the overall complex featured five gates and measured just under 3 km by just over 1 km. The site plan consisted of a fortan upper palace on the top of the rock, and lower palaces at ground level. The king also constructed gardens throughoutand for protection a river with walls surrounded the complex.

Frescoes decorate the western side of the rock, along with the mirror wall, a brick face covered in a highly-polished white plaster. When new, the wall was said to be able to produce Reflections.

Over time the Mirror Wall became a graffiti board, covered in verses written by visitors. Known as "Sigiri Graffiti", some of the messages date to the 8th century CE.

1It is implied in the passage that Sigiriya was built to ______________.

A.preserve the culture of Sri Lanka B.prove the ancient urban planning

C.keep the King from being attacked D.protect the green tropical forest

2According to the passage, some visitors would _________.

A.have a reflection before the Mirror Wall

B.leave comments on the Mirror Wall

C.draw beautiful paintings of girls on the wall

D.be lost in thought before the Mirror Wall

3What do we know about Sigiriya?

A.Its entrance is carved like a lion. B.Its gardens are at ground level.

C.Its western side is a mirror. D.Its palaces are on the top of the rock.

4What is the best title of the passage?

A.The giant lions in Sri Lanka. B.The pearl of the Indian Ocean.

C.The Lion Rock of Sri Lanka. D.The mirror wall in a rock.
