21、 In the past few decades, the way we shop has changed dramatically. We used to buy our goods in traditional shops. Now, customers are increasingly buying online, where they can order whatever they want directly to their door with the click of a mouse. As companies race to improve their Internet shopping experience, the trend towards shopping online is predicted to continue.
Most people commonly think that online shopping is better than in-store shopping. After all, an online store does not use the electricity that a traditional store might use and it doesn't require the customer to drive anywhere. So you would think the carbon savings must be significant.
Take the typical home delivery round in the UK, for example. Supermarket drivers often do 120 deliveries on an 80-kilometre round, producing 20 kilograms of CO2 in total. In contrast, a 21-kilometre drive to the store and back for one household would generate 24 times more CO2! However, the reality is slightly more complex than that. Many home deliveries fail the first time and the driver has to make a second or third attempt to deliver the purchase.
The carbon footprint also goes up if the customer chooses to return the item. A study in Germany shows that as many as one in three online purchases are returned. According to another study, merchandise worth nearly $ 326 million is returned each year in the USA. Two billion kilograms of this ends up in landfill, leading to 13 tons of CO2 being released.
When we take all these factors into consideration, we realize that online shopping isn't necessarily as green as people might think. There is some positive news, as various online retailers are starting to lower their carbon footprint by turning to electric delivery vehicles. However, the question of how to deal with returns efficiently and without waste is a challenge that many companies have not wanted to face, but they have to shoulder responsibilities.

22、Researchers say a new study shows two way communication is possible with people who are asleep and dreaming.
In separate experiments, scientists in the US, France, Germany and the Netherlands asked people simple questions while they slept. Sleepers would respond by moving their eyes or twitching (抽动) their feet in a certain way to indicate their answers.
“Since the 1980s, we’ve known that dreamers can communicate out of dreams by using these signals.” says Karen Konkoly, a Ph. D. student at Northwestern University who is the first author on the study published in Current Biology. “But we were wondering, can we also communicate in by asking people questions that they could actually hear in their dreams so that we could kind of have a more meaningful conversation?”
For example. a typical question would be to ask what is 8 minus 6. A 19-year-old American man was able to respond by moving his eyes lift-right, left-right—two times—to signal “2”. Researchers asked the question again, and he moved his eyes the same way two times again.
Out of the 158 trials among 36 participants, about 18% of the time, they were able to give correct answers. In another 18%, it wasn’t clear whether participants were responding or not. They were wrong 3% of the time. Most often, 61% of the participants didn’t respond at all.
The researchers write that their findings present new opportunities for gaining real-time information about dreaming. Konkoly says there’s the possibility of one day doing a sort of “dream therapy (疗法)” for talking down people experiencing nightmares. And if more reliable communication methods can be worked out, it could help people with creative activities and ideas. With the help of an awake person, Konkoly says it could be possible to“combine those logical advantages of wake with the creative advantages of dreams and maybe have some more applications.
【1】How did the sleepers give answers in the study?
A.By making gestures.
B.By making eye movements.
C.By making faces.
D.By using sign languages.
【2】What can we learn from the new study?

B.Most sleepers could give correct answers.
C.It was the first study of its sort in the world.
D.Researchers got real-time information about dreaming.
【3】What does the new study focus on?
A.Whether dreamers can communicate out of dreams.
B.What questions are suitable to be asked in the study.
C.How researchers can help people experiencing nightmares.
D.Whether two-way communication with dreamers is possible.
【4】What is the author’s attitude to “a meaningful conversation” with dreamers?

B.Objective.
C.Doubtful.
D.Critical.
23、 Elizabeth Anionwu, who has received four honorary degrees for her excellent work in nursing, has devoted her life to improving the lives of thousands in the black community who are suffering with sickle cell disease.
Born to an Irish woman and a Nigerian man, her own upbringing was tarnished by racial discrimination and cruelty. Soon after her birth in 1947, she was sent away to a children’s home run by nuns (修女) who were, at times, very unkind indeed. Once, she was made to stand with a dirty wet sheet over her head as a punishment for wetting the bed.
But a caring nursing nun she met at the age of four inspired her career in nursing. “I had painful eczema (湿疹), which the nuns would treat with a special medicine and cover with bandages,” she explains. “Other nuns would tear them off in a hurry and my skin would break and bleed. But one nice nun treated me very gently and I never felt a thing. Later on, I discovered she was a nurse and I decided that’s what I wanted to be.” At 16 she became a school nurse assistant, which was the start of a 50-year career as a nurse and professor.
In the early 70s, Anionwu had her first encounter with sickle cell anaemia-a painful disease found mostly in African and Caribbean families-which at the time was often overlooked. Families had no information about how to cope with their illness or the symptoms to look out for, so Anionwu took action, raising awareness of the disease and setting up the Sickle Cell Society. It’s then that she became the first sickle cell and thalassemia (地中海贫血症) specialist in Britain.
Elizabeth Anionwu has spent her life as a nurse and tutor, working with black and minority communities in London. In 2019, she was presented with the Pride Of Britain’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her great services to nursing.

Spending too much time in the same environment can keep us from achieving “flow”— being immersed in an activity with full energy and enjoyment.【2】. Look for new challenges to take on together. Try mixing up different sets of friends to do something creative, such as a group cooking lesson, or an old-fashioned tea party.
With other people we care about
