  • 22、In one of my favorite studies on the meaning of life, researchers asked a group of students to write about their “true self”. Another group of students were asked to write about their “everyday self" and a third group of students were asked to write about the campus bookstore. After the writing task, the students were then asked to rate their meaning of life.

The researchers were interested in how much detail the participants provided in their various essays. Their assumption (设想)is that the more detailed description one provides about one's true self, the more likely one authentically (真实地)connects with that sense of self. Not surprisingly, for those writing about their everyday selves or about the campus bookstore, the amount of detail didn't have any connection with their sense of meaning of life. However, when people wrote about their true selves, the more detailed the essay was, the more the person was exposed to the meaning of life.

To live a meaningful life, then, make sure you are in touch with yourself. If you don't follow your own values and dreams, you are most probably following values set by others. And there is nothing more disappointing in life than living someone else's dream. As some wise-cracker has put it, it is better to be yourself, as everyone else is already taken.

Meaningfulness is about connection. While this means that a major part of the meaningfulness in our lives comes from connecting with others through intimate, caring relationships and through being able to contribute to society and those one cares about, you cannot connect with others unless you are first in touch with yourself. Otherwise it is not you who are connecting to others but just an empty shell. Only by knowing what you are, can you start to authentically connect with others.

So,set out to write about your true self and who you believe you really are as a person, what are your most important values, and what you yourself would like to pursue and have in life. Then figure out how you could make that “true self” more the self that is realized in your everyday life and work.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

    A.The process of a study.

    B.The meaning of life.

    C.Three groups of students.

D.A writing task of evaluating life.

【2】What's the finding of the researchers?

A.“Everyday self” connects with the campus bookstore.

B.More various essays interpret life meaning better.

C.The participants with detailed essays have a more meaningful life.

D.More “true self” description makes one experience life meaning better.

【3】What can make you truly connect with others?

A.Following values and dreams set by others.

B.Being the author of your own life.

C.Changing “everyday self” into “true self”.

D.Being able to contribute to society.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Connect with Life - Dream Is Valued

B.Why Not Pursue Goals You Find Useful?

C.Be Yourself — Everyone Else Is Taken

D.Why Not Build Caring Relationships with Yourself?

  • 23、   In the time of weak job and housing markers. Consumers are saving less than they have in decades and industry professionals expect that trend to continue. Consumers saved 6.4 percent of their after-tax in-come in June. Before the recession, the rate was 1 to 2 percent for many years. In June, consumer spending and personal incomes were essentially flat compared with May, suggesting that the American economy, as dependent as it is on shoppers opening their wallets and purses, isn't likely to rebound anytime soon.

On the bright side, the practices that consumers have adopted in response to the economic crisis ultimately could make them happier. New studies of consumption and happiness show, for instance, that people are happier when they spend money on experiences instead of material objects, when they relish what they plan to buy long before they buy it, and when they stop trying to outdo the Joneses.

If consumers end up sticking with their newfound spending habits, some tactics(策略) that retailers and marketers began using during the recession could become lasting business strategies. Among those strategies are offering goods that makes being at home more entertaining and trying to make consumers feel special by giving them access to exclusive events and more personal customer service.

While the current round of stinginess may simply be a response to the economic downturn, some analysts say consumers may also be permanently adjusting their spending based on what they've discovered about what truly makes them happy or fulfilled.

“This actually is a topic that hasn't been researched very much until recently,” says Elizabeth W. Dunn, an associate professor in the psychology department at the University of British Columbia, who is at the forefront of research on consumption and happiness. There's massive literature on in come and happiness. It's amazing how little there is on how to spend your money.

Studies over the last few decades have shown that money, up to a certain point, makes people happier because it lets them meet basic needs. The latest round of research is. for lack of a better term, all about emotional efficiency: how to reap the most happiness for your dollar.

So just where does happiness reside for consumers? Scholars and researchers haven't determined whether Armani will put a bigger smile on your face than Dolce & Gabbana. But they have found that our types of purchases, their size and frequency, and even the timing of the spending all affect long-term happiness.

One major finding is that spending money for an experience - concert tickets, French less orris, sushi-rolling classes, a hotel room in Monaco - produces longer-lasting satisfaction than spending money on plain old stuff.

“It’s better to go on a vacation than buy a new couch is basically the idea,” says Professor Dunn.

Thomas DeLeire, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin discovered that the only category to be positively related to happiness was leisure: vacations, entertainment, sports and equipment like golf clubs and fishing poles.

1What's the dark side of American consumers’ saving more and spending less?

A.The job and housing markets will become even weaker.

B.There is little hope that the American economy will recover soon.

C.More and more retailers and marketers will have to go bankrupt.

D.It’s possible that the American economy will rebound sooner.

2What will happen if customers keep their spending habits formed in the economic downturn?

A.They will get goods and services much cheaper.

B.It's likely that they spend more time indoors.

C.Retailers will change their business strategies.

D.They will enjoy better services and experiences.

3What surprises Elizabeth W Dunn according to the passage?

A.There is little about how to spend money to make people happy.

B.Consumers unconsciously adjust their spending habits to be happy.

C.People started researches on con sumption-happiness relation ship so early.

D.Happiness is proved to have nothing to do with consumption.

4Scholars such as Prof. Dunn and Prof. DeLeire agree that ______

A.richer people feel happier and more satisfied

B.most consumers prefer leading brands like Armani

C.spending on vacations brings long-term happiness

D.people should curb their spending on material thing

  • 24、   There are breathing robots versed in “thousands of years of Buddhist breathing techniques” that claim to soothe you to sleep. Then there are weighted blankets that press around 10% of your body weight down as you take a nap. And there are apps, such as supermodel Natalia Vodianova's Loona, designed to create a "sleepscape" by combining visual and aural storytelling with relaxation-based activities such as colouring in. These are just some of the products at the heart of the “sleep aid revolution”.

Sleep occupies almost as much of the national conversation as weather—how much, when, how deep it is—and we are more than prepared to spend our money on more, and better, shut-eye.

In the past 12 months, sales of sleep-related products have soared. At John Lewis, silk pillowcase sales have increased by 533%. At weighted blankets company Mela, sales are up by 250%, while at Holland & Barrett sales of products in the sleep and relaxation category have grown by over 30% year-on-year.“ sleep” is the third most common unique search term for visitors to Neal's Yard Remedies' site.

But there are some dissenting voices. "The sleep-aid industry steps in, with claims that we're not sleeping because it's time for a new mattress, and offers us products to enable sleep," says Darian Leader, author of Why Can't We Sleep? “However," he points out, “what we are seeing is a depoliticizing of sleep - ignore the socio-economic burdens and internal pain that people face and see lack of sleep as a separate problem with a 'separate solution'."

The growing interest isn't limited to those suffering from diagnosable sleep issues—sleep has become a pillar of the wellness market and tracking it has become another symptom of the rise of the quantified self, a movement that sees people tracking their every step.

Sleep expert Dr. Neil Stanley distrusts the market: “It is a trick to scare everybody because nobody's going to make any money if you just go around saying 'it's common sense, you know how to sleep' .”

While rebutting any scientific evidence for many of the products, he admits that anything—a silk pillowcase, camomile tea, yoga or listening to Pink Floyd really loudly - could, in theory, help.

But, he says, many are overlooking the simple things. "You need three things for a good night's sleep: a bedroom that's comfortable, a relaxed body and a quiet mind ... you need to make space in your life for sleep.”

【1】What does the underlined word “dissenting” probably mean?

    A.Approving

    B.Opposed

    C.Indifferent

    D.Pessimistic

【2】What message does Darian Leader intend to convey in Paragraph 4?

A.A sleep problem is mainly caused by lack of a good mattress.

B.Social and psychological factors should be taken into account.

C.Social and psychological factors are more important than the physical setting.

D.Manufacturers trick people into buying those sleep-related products.

【3】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Sleep-related products meet a mixed reception among customers.

B.Only people with sleep problems need sleep-related products.

C.There is a trend that more people monitor their sleep situation.

D.Darian and Dr. Neil hold contradictory opinions towards sleep-related products.

【4】Why does Dr. Neil Stanley say the words in the last paragraph?

    A.To give a warning.

    B.to provide a comment.

    C.To express a concern.

    D.To make a suggestion.
