二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Five years ago, Yellow-Purple tore a flexor tendon(屈肌腱), making it difficult to use her left leg. The little penguin was having a hard time walking and swimming.

Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium’s visitors.

The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3 D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.

Luckily, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education &Conservation, Kelly Marls, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3 D printer, ACT Group.

With ACT Group’s help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple’s existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon.

The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher shared Yellow-Purple’s story on Facebook, inspiring more than 1.5 million combined views.

1What can we learn about African penguins?

A.They are very large in number. B.They are dangerous species.

C.They are beautiful when young. D.They are attractive to visitors.

2Who came up with the idea of an updated support boot?

A.The ACT Group. B.Dr. Jen Flower.

    C.Kelly Matis. D.Sue Prince

3What preparation work was done before the students got the ACT Group’s help?

A.They reached school on time. B.They held a meeting to discuss the problem.

C.They paid a visit to Yellow-Purple. D.They contacted the ACT Group for supplies.

4What is the best title for this text?

A.The development of 3D printing B.A penguin benefiting from high-tech

C.An effort to put science into practice D.A software that can design

  • 22、Throughout my childhood, I constantly dreamed of being an only child-having no one around to fight with, to share with, to grab the remote control away from me in the middle of a “big game.” But I have an elder sister, whom I have always called “Kicki,” instead of her real name Christie, because I used to have trouble pronouncing the “r” and “s”.

I started playing basketball in primary school. My dad was the coach of my team, and my mom kept score. So my sister, not old enough to stay home alone, was forced to come to all my games. I remember looking toward the stands for my mother’s approval and seeing my sister’s face, confused. It was obvious that she wasn’t excited, but she cheered along with the crowd anyway.

On the car ride home, my parents and I would relive the game. My sister sat in the back seat with me in silence, not knowing how or when to enter the conversation. Often, she would say, “Good game, Brad. ” I would smile and thank her but never took it seriously. She couldn’t possibly know whether I had played well or not.

It wasn’t until I reached high school that I realized how popular she was, and I was referred to as “Christie’s little brother. ” I played basketball in high school, and although Christie wasn’t forced to attend my games anymore, she still came to cheer me every week. In the last game of the last season, she came with a large group of friends. Printed on her shirt, in big bright red letters, were the words “BRAD’S SISTER. ” Suddenly I was embarrassed, not for her presence, but for my previous attitude to her praise.

Kicki left for college after that game. I finally have the remote control all to myself. However, watching TV alone has turned out to be boring. I went to visit her at college during a weekend, and as I stood outside her dorm, waiting for her to come out, a friend of hers whom I didn’t know walked past me and asked, “Hey, aren’t you Christie’s brother?” I smiled broadly and said proudly, “Yeah, I am. I’m Christie’s brother.”

【1】How did Brad feel about being an only child when he was young?

    A.Boring.

    B.Awesome.

    C.Tough.

    D.Awful.

【2】Why did Christie go to Brad’s games when he was in primary school?

A.She hoped to know more about Brad.

B.She was interested in basketball games.

C.She was too young to be left alone at home.

D.She wanted to spend more time with her family.

【3】Why did Brad feel embarrassed according to the last but one paragraph?

A.He treated Christie’s praise lightly before.

B.He forgot Christie’s presence at his last game.

C.He saw the big bright red letters on Christi’s shirt.

D.He received unwanted attention from Christie’s friends.

【4】What can be inferred about Christie?

    A.She was proud of Brad.

    B.She didn’t like watching TV.

C.She enjoyed Brad’s calling her Kicki.

D.She seldom went home during college.

  • 23、   It is becoming increasingly important for researchers to closely monitor our ocean life. Howev¬er, observing sea creatures Up close is almost impossible since human presence scares them. Now, thanks to The Soft Robotic Fish, also known as SoFi, researchers may be able to keep a close eye on the sea creatures.

Built by MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory ( CSAIL), the white re- mote-controlled robot resembles the real fish, complete with a tail that waves from side to side. Though not the first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) created to monitor the ocean , SoFi set- tles many of the problems that have blocked the usefulness of the previous robot fish.

Previous AUVs have had to be linked to boats because radio frequency communications don’t work well underwater. To overcome the problem, Director of die CSALL Daniela Rus and her team used sound waves. The technology can travel greater distances allowing divers to pilot SoFi from up to 50 feet away.

Also limiting the usefulness of traditional AUVs is the risk of collision. With the outside made of soft silicone (硅树脂)rubber and flexible plastic that keeps its inbuilt electronics dry, SoFi po¬ses no such danger. " Collision avoidance often leads to unnecessary movement, since the robot has to settle for a collision-free path" , says Rus. "In contrast, a soft robot is not only more likely to survive a collision but also could use it as information to form a more workable movement plan next time around. "

During test dives, SoFi moved alongside the ocean life at depths of 50 feet for up to 40 minutes at a time, taking photos and making videos. The researchers say sometimes the fish would swim a- longside the strange-looking robot-fish out of curiosity, while at other times they took no notice of its existence.

While SoFi presently only records video, future versions will include sensors. The researchers also hope to make it more autonomous. "We imagine someday it might help us uncover more secrets from the amazing underwater world that we know so little about," says Rus.

1What does the water think of SoFi?

    A. It makes ocean creature detection easier.

    B. It is the first AUV.

    C. It is closely controlled.

    D. It scares sea animals away.

2According to para 3, which of the following is ture?

    A. Sound waves travel faster than radio

    B. Sound waves work better than radio underwater.

    C. Previous AUVs use sound Avaves to communicate.

    D. A boat travels along with SoFi on the water.

3How does SoFi deal with collision?

    A. It can benefit farom its inbuilt electronics.

    B. It can avoid extra movement.

    C. It can smartly adjust its movement plan.

    D. It is set for a collision-free path.

4What will happen to SoFi in the future?

    A. SoFi can record videos.

    B. SoFi will go invisible.

    C. SoFi will be free from external control.

    D. SoFi will be equipped with smart devices.

  • 24、It was a rainy, damp December day. I was headed to the store to pick up another week’s worth of food. I had put off shopping for Christmas presents until later in the month but wasn’t looking forward to the crowd of Christmas shoppers while I grabbed my groceries. I kept the CD player on while I drove to avoid the radio news. It only spoke of the world’s huge problems and how divided we all still were. And it usually just left me feeling helpless.

Still, I gave my son a dollar to put in the bell-ringer’s pot at the door to the store. We went in and soon filled our cart with food. Then we walked towards the self-checkout machines. I hated using them. I much preferred to chat with the friendly cashiers, but the line at them was five deep and I just didn’t have the time. As I pulled my cart up, I heard an old man at the machine next to mine grumbling (嘟囔) under his breath, trying his hardest not to curse. He only had a few items but every time he put his wrinkled, well-worn, twenty-dollar bill into the machine, the money was returned.

I quickly grabbed a newer twenty out of my purse and gave it to him. He thanked me with a warm smile and paid for his goods. I told him to keep his money but he insisted that I take his old, torn twenty. I nodded, put it in my coat pocket, and wished him a Merry Christmas.

After checking out, I remembered something Mother Teresa had once said about how we all can change the world. “Help one person at a time,” she said, “and always start with the person nearest you.” I reached into my pocket, smiled, and went outside. Then I dropped that torn twenty into the bell-ringer’s pot and walked to my car with my son happily.

【1】Why did the author feel helpless?

    A.Radio provided unreliable news.

B.There was always a Christmas rush.

C.People were disconnected from each other.

D.Christmas was ruined by the terrible weather.

【2】How did the author help the old man?

A.By paying for his shopping items.

B.By exchanging a newer note with him.

C.By teaching him how to use the machine.

D.By calling out the friendly cashier in time.

【3】Why did the author give twenty dollars to the bell-ringer?

A.She wanted to pursue Mother Teresa’s ideas.

B.She desired to spread Mother Teresa’s words.

C.She expected to set a good example to her son.

D.She hoped to have a meaningful day with her son.
